think about it: we'll never have a drug-free society. rather than strict regulation with the aim of zero-tollerance, we should look for a comfortable accomidation, perhaps by doing things like making drugs safer to use.

you'll never have a society free of piracy either, and rather than look for a balanced solution, it looks like we're up for a very lengthy, strict and harmful campaign.

Not only would the drugs be cheaper, but if produced legally, they'd be of better quality and safer. Most heroin overdoses don't happen because the user says "I think it's about time I shot enough of this junk to kill me." It happens because potency varies from dealer to dealer, season to season, etc -- or they're sold something completely different instead of what they were expecting. Just like adulterated booze killed/blinded people in the 20's, fake ecstsasy pills and cut heroin/coke do a lot more damage than the pure substances would.

Yet often American sitcoms will refer to coffee in reference to making people hyper, to the point where you'd think that half an espresso is meant to send you crazy.

I live in the states... I think the anti-drug message that has been beaten into peoples brains, makes them eager to feel effects of a drug. Mild mannered old ladies will still love to kid about how the anesthetic at the dentist made them feel. To anyone who has a decent first-hand understanding of how drugs work, it's not a big deal, but to someone with less experience, they might get a cup of coffee from starbucks and start on with their "I CAN HEAR COLORS" rant.

Much of this same behavior can be observed in children. They'll take a sip of dad's beer or whatever, and start acting drunk.

...I hope that made sense. In any case, caffiene definately does have noticeable stimulant effects. I don't notice it from sodas. I do notice it from tea but it's very gradual. If you want to see what I'm talking about, cut off your intake for a few days, then drink a double shot of espresso straight. I still don't get hyper, but I definately get some stimulant effects... Can't sit still for long, feel wide eyed and awake, etc... About like a bump or two of coke would do. :-P

I think the difference is, on the mac, everything is pretty much where you expect it. You don't have to dig through a bunch of dialogs and menus, everything's pretty simple -- this is especially true of Apple's first-party apps. Just remembering where to apply certain settings on a windows machine is kind of a chore, a lot of stuff is buried pretty deep. It's not like it takes a mental giant to conquer it, but it's just a nusance you shouldn't have to deal with. Switching over from a pure windows background might be a little confusing... But if you have any unix experience at all, it's a very accomodating move.

Maybe for an average user. Not for someone trying to develop an app and having to setup sharing across 3 OS's.

Sharing accross 3 OS's? Use samba, on OS X it's a checkbox. You put the check next to "Windows Sharing" and its enabled. You can tweak the /etc/smb.conf just like you would any unix system. I copied mine from my old linux box and it works just the same. I'm also a software developer, what's so hard about developing in OS X? It's just like any other UNIX. Java IDE's are fine, or you can run Apple's Xcode, or other commercial IDE's, or any Gnome/KDE stuff under X11. Pretty much anything you routinely do on a unix box works under darwin. Still, probably not sufficient for a uber-user such as yourself.

i simply don't buy that whole vinyl-is-still-superior argument. if it "sounds better" that's completely subjective to the listener. technically speaking, the ability to accurately re-create the original audio is worse and that's a fact.

HOWEVER, i'm somewhat adept at DJ'ing, and i definately think vinyl is superior for that. even with resampling cd players, and all that computer software, it's still a poor replacement for the hands-on fuckwithery you can achieve with wax.
