And what's especially frustrating is that they replaced two very workable UI gadgets, the Application Menu and the Process Menu

try this: drag your Applications folder to the document area of the dock. now you have an application menu! (right-click or click-and-hold)

was that so hard? i tend to keep my home directory there too, so i can access my apps & files in a similar fashion.

As far as I'm concerned, replacing two UI gadgets with one isn't a blunder -- it's efficency. (really, its 3 widgets -- because it's more like Launcher than anything else) you now have one device that keeps track of your processes, using the same icons you use to launch frequently used programs. programs you use less frequently you can launch from the aforementioned in-dock applications folder.

So Ohio passes a law making sure that at least there are less pirate movies. What is wrong with that?

I live in California, so this is a familiar issue for us. It seems to me that this regulation will do little or nothing to stop piracy. The camcorder rips are only of value when they're released on the 'net BEFORE the movie hits theatres. This means either it was released in another country first (in which case this law is useless) or it was a sneak-preview for a focus group (in which case the industry should just monitor these viewers more closely, dont let anyone bring in a tripod...)

Camcorder-in-theatre ("Telesync") rips are generally a last resort in the piracy world, favored much by rips from a leaked preview DVD/Tape ("Screener"), or a rip from a retail DVD after it's release. I'm not too deeply in touch with the scene, but it seems to me most movies have a screener rip in circulation by the time they're in theatres.

Long story short: this, and similar laws will be ineffective because by the time a movie is released to the masses, the incentive for piracy via a smuggled camera is LONG gone.

i was referring to heroin as an extereme because of its harsh/unpleasant withdrawl effects. it is said that a heroin user will shoot up with an aids-infected needle, even after being told of the needle's contamination, just to end the side effects. would you give yourself aids for another cigarette?

Speaking as someone who has more experience with mind-altering substances than any healthy person should, nicotine addiction is overplayed. Yes, its addictive -- yes, you'll have withdrawls -- but the truth is: it takes 3 years to cement a physical addiction to nicotine. it takes 72 hours to clean your system out and free yourself of the physical addiction. the withdrawls, while very unpleasant, are something that a strong person who WANTS to quit can cope with.

So why do I say it's overplayed? I'm pretty young... i go to a lot of parties. I see too many teens who cant have been smoking for more than a year, saying "i cant quit, im addicted." they use addiction as an excuse to keep up with the habbit, rather than admitting they are chosing to be smokers.

Bottom line is, you should know what substance you're taking -- you should know what its doing to you -- you should know when a craving is your desire or an effect of the substance -- and you should know how to control your dosage. if you cant do any of those, you should avoid substance use/abuse except when perscribed by a doctor. :-)

  13. Re:cut your dosage on Best Way To Beat A Caffeine Addiction? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Rather than switching to decaf, I'd recommend switching to black tea. Tea contains a special chemical (the name illudes me at the moment) that slows the absorbtion of caffiene into your system. This is why tea gives a long, mellow stimulant effect, and coffee gives a strong buzz followed by a "down" period.

Worst case just quit and deal with the side effects. Headaches and irratability are pretty tollerable considering the withdrawls from other substances (opiates, for example: muscle spasms, stomach cramps, projectile vomiting, dilusions, loss of bowel control...)

Chances are you're more psychologically addicted than physically -- though this is nothing to laugh at, as psychological addiction is what keeps heroin users coming back (after they've de-toxed). However, realizing that it's all in your head is a great step towards ignoring cravings of addictive substance/activity.

what bothers me about this article, is the author assumes that by "more secure" the mac elite has meant to saying their OS is perfect. obviously, this isn't the case.

i've had my newest mac for over a year now, and have only seen 2 vulnerabilities made public (openssh, and this trusted host thing). during this same period, i've seen more windows vulnerabilities than i can recall, and i've had encounters with at least 4 widespread microsoft worms [found in my inbox], and watched them bring many networks to their knees.

i haven't seen a virus for mac since the days of System 7 on M68K chips.

bottom line is -- yes, OS X has vulnerabilities... but there will have to be a lot more discovered, and a lot more damage on its behalf (worms, etc.) before anyone can call it even.

Something's gotta give for this cycle to break.... And you can't expect software vendors to package and ship software for OS's that have no userbase in hopes that one day a market will magically appear.

Once you get enough frustrated aunties and uncles, the free market will correct, and you'll start to see more software. It won't happen overnight, and it won't be a smooth transition -- but it can happen. :-)

Plus, if Sun puts in some effort, they could provide what the customer needs before they even get in the car to go to the software store! It's pretty safe to assume that all spam directs you to some sort of business, or money-making device for some person (ie. banner)

While probably grossly unconstitutional, it seems the best way to stop this would be to fine the party who is making the profit. Right now, most of the heat seems to be directed towards the spammers, who are plentiful and difficult to identify. If you get rid of the spammers, but greedy parties still want to send out spam, then more spammers will be made! However, if the spam directs you to freeporn.com -- then fine the hell outta freeporn.com and make a big stink about it in the news. Once this happens a few times, businesses will be wary about using spam again -- the risk vs. reward will be too great.

This can sorta be broken to supply and demand. The "supply" are all those fresh eyes who will see the email, and even act on it (buy the product, click the link, etc...) The "demand" is from those wanting to hire spammers as a cheap way to make a quick buck from the masses. The spammers themselves are just a catalyst that makes the process happen -- the free market will magically make them appear, as long as the supply/demand forces are there. It seems to me, that steps must continue to be taken to stop spam from ever being presented to the user (mail filters, etc.) -- but at the same time, spamming needs to be a more risky and less appealing advertising approach for businesses.
