I can't do it! I want to use linux for my e-mail and web surfing at home but don't know how to configure my modem. I am sure there will be millions like me. Unless connecting to internet from linux is as easy as doing it from windows, linux won't grow. If linux has to grow on desktop, this is one area they need to make immediate progress on. Also, many ISPs dont support linux. (eg Netzero). Who would want to use an OS that can't get to www these days easily?
Considering the ever-dropping cost of 802.11b gear, it may not be too long before WiFi is found in lower-end Digi-Cameras
Forget 802.11b gear and all that. The prices of regular digital cameras are themselves not dropping as much as I would like. The other day, I assembled a great PC for $150 and I'm sure two years down the road, I can build even greater one for that money. But, digicams are still priced at $150-$200 for a decent piece and I don't feel like spending that money knowing that $150 is powerful enough to get you a good computer.
Supposing SETI finds something, will the government let out the news to the general public? What about all the historical cases of UFO sightings? Apart from constantly gazing at skies, should we also not try to demand opening up of all classified government documents about any possible UFO sighting?
Another important question is whether generations to come will have the same motivation and enthusiasm as we do about technology. For example, in 60's people were motivated to explore space but the current generation is not so excited about it. Who knows, the next generation might not care much for computers and robots and all those things.
Most annoying 'feature' of MS Excel
on
Gnumeric Turns 5

· Score: 5, Interesting
I use MS Excel almost everyday for data analysis, and the most annoying part is that number of records cannot exceed 65536 in Excel. Anyting larger than that, we need to get the data into Access and work in it, and that's not very fast and easy. What's the limit in Gnumeric?
When I first started using Credit cards 3 years ago, I never used it on the internet for 6 months, fearing the consequenses of a theft. But, one fine day, my statement showed charges from some cruise/vacation website and some discounts program I never heard of before for $200!! I got mad and called the credit card company and it took them 2 months to fix it. Then, I decided, what the heck, let's use'em on internet since the numbers will be stolen anyway.:(
With this kind of technology (biometrics), the need for passport should be eliminated, right? A machine should look into you eye and make sure you are genuine, eliminating the need for a passport.
Correct me if I am wrong, but 471 programmers at 100,000 per year is only 47,100,000 isn't it?
The total MS is getting is 471,000,000.
They can hire 4710 OSS programmers for the same rate not 471
How long is it before consulants and engineers run their simulations (like road traffic and passengers at airports) on small sized supercomputers? So, far it seems like single desktop is still the norm.
I remember that when I installed Netscape on Win 95, the OS would not boot and gave me a message saying "reinstall operating system". I had to go into safe mode and uninstall Netscape to get Windows to work again.
Once MS starts making anti-virus software, can we expect other anti-virus software to start having this kind of trouble? Maybe Norton wont run on Windows anymore. Who knows?!
Most Indians, even in cities, cannot afford cars. They drive motorbikes and scooters. There is public transportation in every city and it is quite convenient and inexpensive to use it anywhere you want to go. But, weather there is not as extreme as in the US. One reason you cannot switch to bikes in US is that the weather during cold seasons does not permit it. Using bikes may be a good option during late spring, summers and early fall. That will be a good start. Hopefully, something better than gas-based cars will be discovered in the near future.
