  1. Re:How about... on Classic Toys For Christmas? · · Score: 1

Really, you said it all with the bicycle. I guess this isn't something you can get for Christmas very often, but every kid needs a great bike to play around on--a good BMX-style on/off road with the semi-knobby tires--not a road bike with the narrow tires. Really, that was the funnest "toy" I ever had because I would use it all the time. I built ramps to jump from and even actively searched for whatever kinds of little ridges I could find at the edge of a road, manhole covers, dirt trails, etc. that could be used for new jumps. It also got me well on my way to good coordination/balance by doing wheelies and other bike tricks. And of course, it goes without saying that it's a great way for the kids to stay healthy and in shape.

I don't see many kids out riding bikes like that these days, and I wonder if it is because of the popularity of video games. I was born in 1977, so this would have been mid 80's when I was doing most of my biking. I also wonder if the overprotectiveness of parents is contributing to the decline in biking among kids. It seems like most kids I see riding around are wearing bike helmets. The parents are making them wear those, and I'm sure the kids think it looks totally dorky(well it does!) so they may not want to ride very much so they don't have to look dorky as often.

Funny you mention that because I noticed it on the DVD versions that there were horrible colored boxes around the TIE fighters--especially in the scene where Luke and Han are manning the gun turrets on the Falcon. I haven't checked my VHS spec. edition version to see how bad they are there. I think the added clarity of the DVDs may have shown up these boxes more than they appeared before. It is actually really distracting on the DVD.

The thing that is interesting about faith is that it is not proven before belief. Many people here do not believe in God because they haven't seen sufficient proof of God. Also, they characterize faith as forever having no proof so it doesn't make sense to them. Actually, God usually doesn't show proof in advance, but for those who belive and choose to seek God, he usually shows evidence to them. I personally have witnessed several miracles from God, but significantly they only came after choosing to follow him.

It's kind of like saying, "I won't be friends with that person until I see personal evidence that he's trustworthy." Well, the person wants to show you they are trustworthy, but they need that relationship with you to show it.

I'm glad you said something here because I just went back to the preferences page, and they have changed the story selection method to something that actually works. When the Politics section was first created, they used to have a series of checkboxes for story categories instead of these "All" "Some" "None" radio buttons, and I had selected to exclude Politics, and it didn't work. I was kind of ticked at that, so I'm glad they fixed it.

If it just needed to sit there and spin without touching anything, it might be fine, but if you actually press it against something--you know, to accomplish something useful--the tiny motor can't handle it. I was trying to grind my dogs nails for just a minute or two, and the thing got really hot and then stopped working. I took the batteries out, and they were too hot to touch. After the thing had cooled down, I put the batteries back in and tried again later. When I tried to grind the nails again, it just got hot and died again.

I heard the part about this being your day job, but you'll have to explain the physics of that specific part to me because that doesn't make sense. If the wing is on the rear deck of the car (behind the rear wheels), it is going to act as a lever with the rear wheels acting as the fulcrum. Any downward force applied behind the rear wheels will necessarily lift weight off the front wheels. If the force is applied anywhere in between the axles, then you would have it distributed between all four tires.

The technology is certainly valid in the Star Wars universe. That would be the same thing they use in ship hangars. They have people inside the hangars that seem to be open to space. That is referenced in some of the novels how there is a force field in place at the hangar opening that air molecules cannot pass through, which keeps the interior pressurized. Ships can apparently fly through it, though.

He's referring to Windows XP as a base operating system and using other apps to handle the media portion.

From AstroDrabb: The MS Media PC tried to lock EVERYTHING to the MS PC. Any audio or video I recorded was LOCKED to the MS ONLY MEDIA CENTER...MythTV doesn't try to lock EVERY PIECE OF MEDIA to only one computer while MS's media offering does.
He's talking about the Windows Media Center Edition, where it uses built-in programs to do recording and streaming in a DRM protected format, as he says. What he says is true, but is not what badasscat was talking about.

From badasscat: As for the "tried to lock EVERYTHING", either you don't know how to setup a shared drive with Windows, you are using a funky software (in which case, your bad), or you are just plain lying. Windows Media Player does lock the current file it is playing, nothing more.
He missed the mention of "Media Center", so he doesn't know what he means by "locked" and thinks he is referring to a temporary lock of an in-use file.

From Astrodrabb: Huh? The locking has NOTHING to do with a shared drive bone head. The MS Media PC uses DRM on everything...[extensive rant on how much the MS DRM sucks.]
Still doesn't realize badasscat is not talking about Media Center Edition.

Just calm down guys. badasscat has an interesting, simple solution to the original question. Astrodrabb has a valid, but unrelated complaint.

The GPL apples, however, require that if you use the apples as an ingredient in something, you must disclose your recipe if you sell or give away your cooked product.
