    There are at least a couple on the market. My nomad II mas a small mic (look for the pin hole just below the wheel on the picture in the link), and the archos jukebox recorder has a line in for recording.

    Even Macs with a 68K CPU aren't fast enough (all PPC Macs can though), so if your question is for real, then no, the 1.8 MHz MOS 6502 won't cut it.

    Ignoring DVD-RAM (it needs cartridges and is not really DVD at all)

    I'm not sure what you mean by not really DVD, but type II DVD-RAM discs can be removed and played in DVD drives.

    They only need the cartridge to write, I used to have an external Panasonic drive, and it played CDs and DVDs fine (including movie DVDs, not just data discs) without cartridges.

    It doesn't even need to be that sophisticated. All the spammer needs to do is link to a .gif that is only loaded in the email. Then check to server logs to see which email is most effective at getting people to open it.

    That's exactly the problem - when you let one person (or several) define what is "vulgar, obscene, etc." you start to do what the submitter didn't want to do - censor. It's been said before, but who decides the specific criterion that make something vulgar (as an aside, I was under the impression that vulgar means "common - as in boorish" not obscene).

    A few of the criteria they list are so vague as to allow almost any message to be removed. Hateful towards what? Half the posts on /. are hateful (MS, RIAA, MPAA, etc. suck - would these get removed?), as for "otherwise objectionable", hell, I'll bet every single post is objectionable to at least one person somewhere.

    Seems like a PITA for those of us who don't leave their computers on 24/7, or don't want to string ethernet cables all over the house (the network over phone lines sounds interesting though - too bad I don't have a modem).

    Why don't they just throw a 10, 20 or 40 GB drive in it and make it a stand-alone unit. You'd just have to sync it every once in a while to update the songs.

    750MHz CPU: $40 (OEM) to $65 (Retail)

    Celeron or Duron, maybe. The cheapest p3 750 (I believe the XBox has a 733 which will cost a bit more because it runs on a 133 MHz bus) is just over $100 now, and that's for the OEM version which will only have a 3 month warrantee. The retail with a 3 yr. warrantee are up to $50 more.

    Yes, ground. It's called UPS standard, though (I'm guessing it's different because it's an int'l package). I entered the same values (weight, size, insured value), and UPS standard was cheaper to Montreal than UPS ground is to California (again from NY).

    "UPS Ground does not insure international shipments"

    To translate, that mean he couldn't insure it with UPS.


    Where on UPS's site does it say that? In may, I shipped a computer to Montreal from NY, and insured it for $1000. This is not a policy change either - I just went to the UPS shipping charge calculator, and was able to get insurance for a package for both US->CA and CA->US. Insurance is only $0.35 for each $100 of value.

    Impairment of the availability of data, a program, a system or information" (translation: Damage done to your programs/OS/data) IS hacking

    Every EULA has this sort "we are not responsible if your computer dies as the result of crappy programming on our part" clause built in. That you don't have to agree to it before it runs on your system is definitely a cause for alarm, though. I still disagree that this was intended as a carte blanche to rifle through people's drives and delete files.

    it says nothing about hacking into comuters and deleting files. Wired no doubtedly knows this, but they also know this headline will get them several thousand hits today
    Here's the full text (emphasis mine):

    'No action may be brought under this subsection arising out of any impairment of the availability of data, a program, a system or information, resulting from measures taken by an owner of copyright in a work of authorship, or any person authorized by such owner to act on its behalf, that are reasonably intended to impede or prevent the unauthorized transmission of such work by wire or electronic communication of such transmission would infringe the rights of the copyright owner.''

    It looks like they are trying to come up with a way to detect if mp3s are being transmitted, and block it.

    The stove, refrigerator, even the kitchen sink, er dishwasher... Everything will have an IP address. Your dinner will be cooked to exacting specifications and the groceries will be automatically ordered

    Hopefully the script kiddie who roots my box will be able to cook better than me. Maybe he'll be kind enough to start the dishwasher after dinner too.

    In the review (posted on /.) it demonstrated heatsinks being removed from the CPU while in operation. Both the PIII & PIV survived but the Athlons fried up with one taking the motherboard with it

    Who would do this??? There's even a warning sticker on Athlons and Durons that specifically states not to operate without a heatsink.

    As far as being dislodged, I've never heard of that in normal operation, but if you're overly paranoid, you could get a HSF that screws into the motherboard like the mc462 from swiftech. It uses the four screw holes present on all socket A motherboards.

    They show a "crash test" where they repeatedly dropped a case off the roof of a one story building. The HSF did not come off.

    The problem is not whether someone pays attention. It's very distracting when the person next to you, or in the row in front of you is surfing. It's worse than sitting next to the guy who clicks his pen every 0.25 seconds, or the guy who shakes his left leg so fast that the surface of my coffee has ripples on it.

    I don't see how that would help. AFAIK hardware routers don't make logs, and if they did how would that prove it wasn't you? All it would show is that some machine sent out a request for a DHCP lease and was assigned 192.168.x.x. Try telling the feds "no, no, that really wasn't me."

    The log would need to have the mac address. Even in that case would the feds believe you didn't change the hex values so it didn't look like your machine?

    Those inefficiencies are intentional. Early typewriters would jam if you typed too quickly, so an inefficient layout was designed that spread out the most common letters.

    If people are wondering if this will work, try this: go to one end of a corridor and try to keep the light fixed on something at the other end. It's almost impossible to keep it stable at 50 meters or so - people would be luck to hit the moon at all.

    This site(xlr8yourmac.com) has a couple of articles on putting mac motherboards into PC cases (mainly for the extra drive bays). I used to have a G3 with SCSI and IDE on board, but could only put 2 HDs, zip and CD in it. One of the reasons I got rid of it is because I wanted an extra 3 or 4 drive bays.

    I was looking at my server log, and couldn't believe how many hits from the second round code red it received. I did a DNS lookup on a few of the addressed (most of the hits seem to be from 64.x.x.x). Several are from 64.4.13.232 (msgr-cs22.msgr.hotmail.com).

    At first I was astounded that so many users could running IIS still unpatched, but if sites like hotmail can't patch their servers, how can we expect the average home user to?
