The comparison doesn't hold... Sega wasn't in the best financial situation and the Dreamcast had to be a financial success for them. To MS the XBOX is just one front in their effort own the living room, and as we all know the have deep pockets.

Umm no. What you are not grasping is how completely irrelevant a bad launch of the 360 is to Microsoft. If there is one thing MS is good at doing it is getting inferior products to market and then use Fear Undoubt and Deception against the opposition to cement a lead. If you think that the best product wins get a clue and feel free to attach your name to comments coward.

I applaud your restraint, and if enough consumers had it we would get better products all around. However Microsoft's model is predicated on reoccurring revenue streams. Office does not change to drastically version from version yet enough people buy it to make MS tons o' cash. I bet enough people are going to buy the XBOX 360 and then turn around and buy the XBOX 360.5 to make them more than enough money to justify the launch of the 360 with out the HD-DVD. As long as MS has something out there can can create FUD with this is a lose for Sony.

  7. disastrous for Sony on Sony May Delay PS3 Until 2007 · · Score: 1

This would be a disastrous move on Sony's part. No matter how crappy the XBOX launch titles are launching the PS3 in 2007 will give MS two Q4s to push out games and get traction. Microsoft is no Sega and there is no way that Sony could repeat its success in the PS2 vs Dreamcast fight. The fact that this idea is even floating suggests that Sony is having serious problems at some stage (I guess manufacturing) of the PS3 development.

  13. Nexus Review off base on In Space No One Can Hear You Sigh · · Score: 3, Interesting

The important thing to understand about Nexus is that it is a tactical strategy game with capital ships. Howeworld1/2 have more a focus on fighters. In Nexus fighters are for the most part are not too relavent. If you look at capital ship battles in WWII or the high sea faring days, they take hours. Massive ships doing massive damage over relatively long periods of time. Nexus does this and does it in spades. Put it this way, in Nexus you are in charge of Star Destroyers not the X-wing or TIE fighters.

The slowness of the game (1-2 hours per battle) is in a sense its strength. Instead following the typical RTS formula, harvest, and hoard until you can build your best units Nexus starts you out with your best units and requires actual strategic thinking in how to beat the enemy rather than flood them with your strongest units. In fairness the interface is a little steep but once you get by it, Nexus is a gem of a game. The best analog to Nexus I can think of is Destroyer Command from Ubisoft. If you want to play as fighter, stick to wingcommander, or freespace. If you want space based RTS, HW1 and 2 are your cup of tea. If you want engaging tactical capital ship battles try Nexus out.

    Fair enough...

By HP's standards I guess they are "innovating in a commodity space". Though I do question the wisdom/cost of doing any hardware retooling to the existing LCD manufacturing lines.

  15. Re:OLEDs on HP Introduces New Technology to Save Mobile Battery Life · · Score: 1

Not really... If you factor in the cost of LCD production vs. OLED production you'll find that OLEDs save you a LOT of money. Considering how razor thin margins on LCD panels, and the devices that are using them are, any money spent on R&D in the OLED dept would be recovered fairly quickly.
