You might be a BIT lost in terms of where you-as-main-character got involved in all this, but they acutally run through a bunch of the backstory in the first parts of the game.

Speaking as someone who played the first one, and is partly through HL2, it's gonna be a touch perplexing either way, and the focus of the story that I've experienced is really on "forget all the 'whys' and 'hows' for the moment, we have things to do here and now."

The worst part for me reading this is that I bought it on Steam, downloaded it, and I was playing (like the newspost said) at 12:15AM PST, and that only because it had to decrypt the preloaded files.

Okay, this is the business my father's in so I know this--average margin for a small non-chain grocery store/supermarket (and some chain stores that operate similarly, like IGA in some places in the NorthEast) is between 1% and 10% depending on the goods. It averages about 6%. And that's gross profit, not net.

  25. Re: Second Amendment on Neal Stephenson Responds With Wit and Humor · · Score: 1

If you look at Lincoln's public statements and writings, you'll know the civil war happened entirely because the cotton tariff was pretty much entirely funding the federal government, and Lincoln didn't want to let 90% of federal income go without a fight.

Hell, you can also read up on how Lincoln suspeded habeas corpus, attempted to imprison a justice who disagreed with him, encouraged war crimes and pardoned convicted war criminals, and ordered the only genocide in American history (which, thankfully, wasn't completely fully).

So arguing anything about the civil war isn't gonna help your case much when you're talking to people who actually know history.
