I kind of want you to just go ahead and try it... Make the mod, post an article to slashdot about how we are all going to take part in a test to show the silliness of the ESRB's new found understanding of released content, and then step back and observe the results.

  2. Re:What apple should do now on Ars Technica's iPod nano Dissection · · Score: 1

Okay, actually I have to agree with you for the most part... Like I said in my OP I'm a HUGE shuffle advocate. I completely agree about putting only stuff you'll absolutly want to hear ALL the time onto the shuffle to create the ultimate computer controlled "Über mix". I did just that as well and really did love how the shuffle worked... Just hit play and you got some random amazing song... All was well... Or well until after about 5 months of this behavior when after which I found myself not liking some of the same songs anymore and well they were still ending up on my shuffle (forcing me to hit "next"). Now just because I didn't want them on my shuffle, doesn't mean I don't want them in my library anymore and so the need for Smart Playlist to load my shuffle because clear. After a couple of attempts at setting up all sorts of strange connoctions to load my shuffle I finally settled on a combo between a static list (featuring songs I ALWAYS wanted on the shuffle) and a Smart list to pick non-dups of highly rated/highly played songs to fill up the capacity.

Now while that system was working well and obviously there is no "necessary" need for a new iPod (other than just my wanting one), I found the addition of a screen, playlist controls, and the Podcast option to be good, useful features that I absolutly feel like I've been missing on my shuffle. And have I mentioned the new one, is just as small, more portable (due to it's extreme thiness), and a bunch more sexy for my thumb to rub.

  3. Re:What apple should do now on Ars Technica's iPod nano Dissection · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know there are a couple of Nano NOT kill shuffle posts but I figured I'd reply to this one.

I just picked up a Nano after owning a loving a shuffle since, well pretty much since the day they came out. Actually until yestarday I had really thought all other iPods were overkill... The shuffle was tough, long lasting, and really held as much music as one person could really listen to before they returned to any computer (yes, expect you freaks wanting EVERYTHING). Anyway, like I said, I was satisfied, that is until the clean integration of podcasts into the iPod world.

No matter how well I worked my smart playlists (or used automater) I couldn't find a good way of managing to get one or two podcasts onto the shuffle each day, at the head of the list (making them easy to access). With the full functionality of the iPod/Podcast built into the Nano, my problems were solved. Now, I've got the portability of the shuffle (I'm serious, I'm thinking the Nano is MORE portable than the shuffle), plus the easy of music management of a full sized iPod, all in a beautiful, un-skippable device...

As far as I'm concerned, the shuffle can live on fine as a low-end apple music player (or something perfect for my 74 year old father, which is who now uses my former shuffle). Other than that, just spend the extra cash and step up to the latest work from apple.

And to the parent post... What happens when it picks stuff you don't like and you spend your entire time hitting NEXT? Is that just hitting play? Not picking, I just know that I got annoyed.

  4. My Path... on Gaming Industry Engages in a Bit of Nostalgia · · Score: 5, Informative

I consider myself lucky to be part of the games industry at this point. How did I get in? Well actually it was quite simple.

1)Saw a posting on my current employer's website.
2)Responded by faxing in my resume.
3)Had an interview in which I convinced my boss it was in his best interest to hire me.
4)(And I'm refusing to slack and just say "Profit!") Worked my ass off to prove they had made the right choice.

And here I am, 2 1/2 years later, still working at the same (great) company doing more of the stuff I love to do. Last time I checked that path to employment wasn't anything amazingly hard or unusual. So, what does it take to get a job in the games industry today? The same thing it's always taken to get any job in any industry, drive.

Yeah, I'm well aware fo the Classic NES series that you mentioned but I'm talking ALL of the NES games on a nice easy to transfer (back and forth between the revolution) handheld. Not just Metroid, Mario and so on... I want my Duck Tales, Ice Hockey, Punch Out, etc, etc all easily downloadable, transferable and legal.

Don't get me wrong, yeah I CAN do that now with my PSP (except for the legal part which I think is a fairly important part) but I'm saying that I think much of the not as tech savy world would really jump at a product like that... And yes (to the post below) bring on the gameboy next.

  7. Old news but potentional for Nintendo on What's Up With The PSP? · · Score: 1

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree...

I got my PSP right around release (thankfully for free) and picked up Luminies and Outlaw Golf shortly after... Luminies certinaly was a nice introduction to the quality of the PSP's screen but honestly didn't do much else for me. Outlaw golf was fun for a minute too but you know what, certinaly not something I HAVE to play.

Then came the emulators and finally I found a use once again for my PSP. After loading it up with NES roms I have to say, there is almost nothing cooler than playing RBI Baseball or Tyson's Punchout on the subways to work. Sometimes I'll even leave the volume up just a bit so all my fellow commuters can rejoice in the glory that is NES soundtracks. Stupid dragon warrriors theme just won't get out of my head.

That being said, why hasn't Nintentdo taken this route at all (or at least now that they've seen the potential market)? I'm serious, can you imagine the type of sales they would get if they created a portable device that allowed you to legally play all those great games from your childhood all for a nice low hardware price? I mean it's all those simple games that actual convert well to a portable system not uber complicated, multi-houred cinematic dreams. I mean think about the best portable games, Tetris, and um, Tetris? Hmmm, maybe the Revolution will have a portable counterpart that would allow you to take your purchased library on the road with you... Nintendo are you listening? Yes, they definintly need to get on this.

As for the fate of the PSP, I don't think it's completly dead yet. As mentioned, GTA:LCS is coming down the pipeline shortly and I can say that it certinaly is a ton of fun. I mean there really isn't anything like seeing a fully realized GTA world neatly placed inside a portable. Mayhem on the streets is just too good to pass up.

Whether the changes made to "unlock" the mini-game was 1 bit or a whole script swap, ANY modification of the game code, whether in the engine, the scripts, or even in a saved game file constitutes a violation of the EULA and creates a game that is no longer explicitly Rockstars.

And while many are saying that the engine in SA is the same as the one in VC and III, this isn't quite true. The engine has been modified greatly to allow for the much larger, fully streamed (no loading no matter where you travel) huge map.

For example now a "tree" like system is used for drawing in the various levels of details rather than the linear system that was used in the previous games. Yes, the look of the game is similar, but it is certainly a greatly improved engine to handle the new game's massive size. I mean you wouldn't say that an AMG V8 is the same engine as that honda 4 cyl would you?

But I'm even more impressed when I compare it to my '00 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro which gets a pretty sad ~28 mpg on the highway with not quite the same amount of power. Its amazing what a turbo can do for power without hurting the economy. Guess thats why I'm choosing to go with a turbo upgrade in the Audi rather than go for the always on supercharger.
