Nope, these players fail to play *new features* on new discs. The original movie format should work just fine, but things like Picture-in-Picture and the persistent storage thing doesn't. This only means that some extras are unavailable. Thus, his player does what he paid for, but doesn't do what someone with a newer player paid for.

In the end, we'll probably see Sony screw it up in another way to make his older player break completely, but that's a different story. BD+ will probably be on the receiving end of a lot of curses...

In principle, this is how stupidly it works, yes.

Fortunately, almost everything ignores the problem of protecting hi-def audio and still sends out the clear signal on SPDIF. The only thing that does anything is Vista, AFAIK.

  8. Re:Why use HDMI? on HD Monitor Causes DRM Issues with Netflix · · Score: 3, Informative

Close. HDMI is DVI with sound (basically good old SPDIF). DVI supports HDCP (on some devices) and HDCP isn't a requirement on HDMI.

The problem is that some things require HDCP on high quality video signals, thus needing HDCP-enabled DVI or HDMI devices. The same goes for high quality sound, but since there's no protection on SPDIF, you're just out of luck. I believe that Vista will destroy your sound quality if DRM-infested media is played with an SPDIF output.

The only problem with diesel is that it goes bad after a while. We provide emergency power with three V12 diesel engines (providing roughly 300 kW at full capacity), but only keep about four days worth of diesel in the tank so we don't have to replace as much when it degrades. We do have special agreements with the gas companies, being a vital infrastructure site, though.

I want a couple of SAS (well, faster 10k) drives for my OS and SATA (well, slower, high capacity)drives for my bulk data, using one of the cheapish controllers...

The whole distinction between SATA and SAS is silly anyway, since the interface makes little difference. We had the possibility of getting rid of that stupid "SCSI drives are better than IDE" notion once and for all, making way for interchangable drives of varying prices, qualities and speeds, all using the same interface, but someone blew it... again. SATA just shouldn't exist, really.
