  1. Why I think it is an awesome idea on Lycos Anti-Spam Screensaver Brings Down Spam Sites · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree. I think the screensaver is a great idea. You can say what you want about ethics and all, but the fact is that the spammers are already mounting their own DDoS attacks on anti-spam sites. Did the authorities do anything? Nope. Think about it... if a guy sucker-punches you in a dark deserted alley, would you punch back or ignore him? Spammers have clearly declared war on anti-spam sites(and the general public). I liken the DDoS of SpamCop in November 2003 to Pearl Harbor. The only difference is that after Pearl Harbor, we defended ourselves and vanquished our opponent. What was the outcome of the SpamCop DDoS? "Well, you'll just have to invest in better filtering software and pray it'll work". I'm tired of hiding from spam. We have to fight back.

I read the reports here and there about a spammer getting jailed/fined/lynched, but my inbox still fills up. I'll bet that for each spammer that is jailed/fined/lynched, you have 5 new spammers filling the void. What is being done to stop this? Not a lot. Spamming is still a HUGE moneymaking opportunity with relatively few barriers to entry, and it is "legal"(as long as you cover your bases).

IMO, the best thing about this tool is that it will allow the common man to "get back" at spammers. I think people have lost their patience. They don't want to wait months for the next half-baked, loophole-laden piece of legislation that the spammers in other countries will just laugh at.

Another facet of this discussion is enforcement (at least in the US). Many sites say that it will open you up to legal trouble, which may be true by the letter of the law. But consider this - very few spam that I receive are "can-spam" compliant. This, coupled with the fact that the US is the biggest source of spam, indicates that the US Government is having trouble enforcing a law that it made specifically against spam. IANAL, but I don't think there is a federal law against DDoS'ing. I'm not saying it's OK to DDoS, I'm just saying that I think you'll be struck by lightning 3 times before you get nailed for DDoS'ing a spammer.

And about the DoS at the user-level... If Lycos only directs a user to DoS spammers in countries outside of the users' own country, does the spammer have any recourse other than to complain to the DOS'ers ISP?

I have a Treo 600(PalmOS5) and it works with most palm games I have found. As far as 3D games go, it probably couldn't hack it... But I expect that Palm OS6 will change all of that because it seems to be more graphics-oriented.

Along the same line, I don't expect the N-Gage to go anywhere, because with all that processing power, you still aren't running a widely-supported OS. Don't get me wrong, Symbian seems pretty cool, but I gotta believe that more games would be written for it if it were really a good playform. I find new games for Palm every day, and some are more fun than the PC games I pay twice as much for. It's also cool that you can find any program under the sun for Palm. I can also do maps, e-mail, spreadsheets, word processing, and FULL HTML web browsing on the go. If you have the processor, you should be able to use it for more than games...

Although I haven't tried this part, this is supposed to fix an issue if you use outlook express:
In the registry key of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express add a new DWord value, name it "Hide Messenger" and give it a value of 2.

Personally, I think the whole Windows Messenger thing is a ploy to relive history when they integrated IE into their OS in order to beat out competition. Marc2k has a good point, and you also have to look at the cost of turning crude oil in the sand into gasoline at the pump.

You got wells to get it out of the earth, oil tankers to transport it to the refinery, a large staff at the refinery, and big-rigs/drivers bringing it to your local gas station. That would be the large "gas-engine" counterpart to the small loss encountered by the inefficiencies in the power grid. At the very least, this would cut down on the big-rigs on the road and the pollution/congestion they create.

The part that excites me is that it will open the door for alternative energy sources. The world will no longer have to rely on the middle east for oil to power the cars. If OPEC decides it wants to raise the price of oil again, we can just make more nuclear power plants(or some non-fossil-fuel plant) .

Looking even farther into the future, consider the combination of these vehicles with fusion power, when it is perfected. Then, range would not be an issue. You could have a car that could do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, and not have to be refueled for 200 years. And SOME company would be able to do it for well under $200k.

I think this is a great move, although I'm still voting yes on the recall of this nut. It's the companies that profit from these spam campaigns, and this law is giving Californians (more) rights to go after these shady businesses. Sometimes I go and research certain spam emails, and while it may be true that the spamming server is in Brazil, the company reaping the profits from the sale of the product is most often somewhere in the United States. Hypothetical situation: Considering the fact that I get about 100 spam messages a day, it is therefore likely that I will receive 11 spam messages from California companies. I am a California resident. Moving right along, let's say that only two out of these 11 emails proves to lead to real, commercial, non-judgment-proof entities that will pay. After fees and my time, let's say I make $800 off of these two combined. 5 days in a work week * $800 a day = $4000 a week $4000 a week * 4 weeks in a month = $16,000 a month Not a bad monthly income, even if they DO tax the hell out of the rich.
