    Unreal Tournament
    UT2K3
    Medal of Honor (+ expansion)
    Deus Ex

I would say that Halo was the most FUN I've had in any of them.

    Halo sound-

I thought the little alien sayings were totally cool. It took a little bit before I realized it was in english, but once I did, I thought it was pretty funny.

As far as the controls go-

Halo was the first first person shooter I played that was NOT on a PC. In fact, I was at a friends house, and he showed me Halo- I played it for a while and thought two things:

#1- controlling an FPS with a console controller was horrible.

#2- the 'auto-aim' or 'aim-assist' or whatever they call it when you just have to get 'close enough' was stupid.

Well- after I actually played the game, I realized that both of these thoughts were WRONG. The console controller DOES work, and mostly because of the auto-aim. Either one of them alone would probably not work, but together, it is excellent.

I'm playing Ghost Recon: Island Thunder right now- and it seems like some weapons are auto-aim, and some are not. When the auto-aim is on, it's fun. When it isn't on, it is very frustrating. But- GRIT is one of the few Xbox titles where the graphics have actually made me not like the game, so I don't play it too much anyway.

Gotta plug the game I'm currently playing though- Crimson Skies. Great game, if you don't mind the cheesey background story.

Is it the best game ever? Who knows...that changes all the time- but it really is a good game.

For the Xbox I just got Crimson Skies and Top Spin- both are excellent games. Now I feel like they are really starting to use the hardware by creating great games- not just making games to sell to people who bought the hardware and are looking for something to make it make sense.

I buy a lot of games, but I never FINISH any of them. Simpsons Hit and Run is my latest. I bought it, I played it, I had fun, and now it is time to move on. I think that I actually completed something like 18% of the game. No, I am not going to 'explore' the entire town to find every single little (bee camera, card, gag) but the ones I do find are pretty fun.

I've got 4 other people in the house all needing something- so my video game time is very short. I try to make it as exciting as possible, and usually that means some new game that just came out.

Too bad nobody else at home is interested in games- I could just imagine how I would have been thrilled if my dad was into video games, and had a huge collection. Instead they all just think I'm a dork. Well, at least my 13 year old daughter gives me SOME respect, because I do know what all of her friends (who are boys- as opposed to boyfriends) are talking about...and I can at least hold my own on NBA Street when they come over.

Oh...I did finish Halo...I think that is the only one.

In the U.S., ballpoint pens cost about 7 cents each.

Typically, I buy a bag or two of them every year or so when they have a big bin at Staples, and throw them into the desk drawer. I usually don't have too much trouble with them, but this discussion has spurred me on to figure out how much time I should spend on trying to get one of these to work.

I figure that it actually takes about 4 seconds of billed time to buy a new pen.

This may be a horrible 'throwaway society' viewpoint, but I don't usually spend too much time dicking with my pen before I pull another one out of the drawer. And of course, I throw the first one away, so I don't run into the same problem with it again.

Usually though, the issue is that I lose all my pens- not that they don't work. Eventually I end up searching through the glovebox in my car, where there is always a vast collection of pens that I have acquired from different places. Obviously there is some sort of subversive pen-exchange system out there, transferring pens around the country.

I used to own a business where I thought it would be a good idea to give out pens to my customers. Not like a fine gift or anything, but just have stacks of them so people could take them when they wanted to. So I ordered like 5,000 of them, and started handing them out right away.

Within the first month I got 3 or 4 calls from people telling me that my pens sucked. I figured that if they bothered to call, then they must have really sucked bad. I started testing them, and yes, they really did suck. So I ended up throwing out about 4,750 pens.

Maybe I should have sent them to India...I can just imagine all of those potential customers blowing on the pens with my company name and logo on them. That would have been fantastic exposure, especially now that a lot of Indians are moving into the area.

"So sir, how is it that you happened to come into (my former company name)"

"I used to blow on your pens as a child, and I always dreamed of coming here one day...and telling you that your pens sucked."

The author of the article referred to was obviously a Linux fanboy/zealot. And, I wonder if he has problems using a computer under ANY operating system.

1- He complains that Windows Update doesn't tell him what it is doing. This is absolute crap- a lie. You have the option to see information about every patch it is applying, you can remove patches, there are direct links to very informative security bulletins telling you what the patch is all about. If the author considers himself technically minded, but didn't actually READ what was on the screen, that was his problem. But- he succeeded in installing the patches- and that is what is important. See- it's set up so even morons like him can do it.

2- He couldn't figure out how to add icons in the 'bottom panel' (Taskbar) in Windows. Well, if he had tried to drag and drop, wonderful things would have happened. But, instead he sat there like a slack-jawed idiot, looking for problems. It takes about 2 seconds to add something to the taskbar, or the start menu.

3- Once again, feigning (or proving) total ignorance, he didn't understand what these 'pop-up' ads are all about- and why can't IE get rid of them? True- IE out of the box will display pop-ups, but when you add the Google Toolbar (free) not only will it block pop-ups, but it will give you some awesome IE/Windows only tools right in your browser. The Google Toolbar is better than any similar thing I have seen in other browsers. The answer is out there. And it's free, and it's good.

There were a lot of other problems I saw with his article. But because he was already preaching to the choir, most of it will just be greeted with silly smiles, and lots of head shaking. It must make him feel good to be surrounded by people who think the same way he does, and only make his half-hearted attempts at looking at other options.

I'm a programmer, who JUST had a run-in with marketing at work. It was not pretty...

We create and support an on-line application used by a variety of different offices. These offices use our program to disseminate information to the general public.

Marketing wanted to add a new 'feature' which would be promoting our products, over those of our customers. I 'suggested' many times that we should make this an option- not a locked-in feature. During the initial meeting with marketing, they laughed at me- told me how little I knew about the business- even though I am the primary contact within the company for our customers.

Meeting 2, we had set up one demo site, someone who was very deeply entrenched in our system and sympathetic to our marketing department, they said it was fine. I still suggested we should make it an option, but now marketing had 'proof'.

We then pushed the 'feature' out to everyone. Some of our customers were screaming and yelling within minutes of the announcement (at me, because I am their 'answer man'). I had to tell them to talk to the marketing director.

Later that day, the marketing director called me, and said we needed to pull the plug on the whole feature. I again suggested that maybe we could make it an OPTION. The marketing director said "screw it, these people don't know what's good for them- I am done with this project. This whole thing will fail."

So, finally I just made it an option. The 3 or 4 customers who hated it turned it off, and everything was fine.

My question, and the tie-in to this article is...

Why the hell does the Marketing deparment think they know what is best for everyone? Is it really THAT hard to figure out that not EVERYONE will agree with you? (i.e., not everyone will fall for your lies)

Horrible- the 'lobby system' consists of a bunch of similar looking rooms where you can either type (?) or talk to each other to go on some really, really, lame quests.

The graphics are horrible- except for the intro (but that lame music overshadowed the nice graphics), and that really cool black screen with the stars coming at you- THAT was nice.

But- if you generally like action games- this may be one you want to avoid. I have heard that it is a fantastic RPG- but personally, I couldn't further than about 10 minutes into the game before I gave up. I did this repeatedly until I decided this was not a game for me.

I'm just putting this out there, so other un-suspecting people like me don't spend their time or money on this game. Oh...I hated Knights of the Old Republic too. I guess a lot of people really liked that one...but I hated the combat system.
