  3. Re:Fingernail sized cards? I doubt it on Replace Your Music....Again · · Score: 1

I don't think that we will be BUYING music in any physical media format. We will be buying the information/license and we'll be putting the music on any media that suits us.

Maybe you like the idea of playing with a dongle- fine, play with a dongle. Other people will do it the way they are more comfortable with.

I wasn't suggesting that we will have 'online' music (I guess maybe that means streaming). I think we will be purchasing/downloading the music online, and saving it to the media of our own choice- then without restrictive DRM, we could move it other types of media of our own choosing.

You can cruise around on your velocipede, listening to your 78's- and I'll be on my Segway (umm...scratch that...replace it with 'Flying Scooter') listing to 100GBs of music on a player that is contained within my lightweight headphones.

Actually, the media will probably be stored in my shoes or something, with a battery that recharges from the kenetic energy of walking, and connect to tiny bud earphones via wireless signal.

If I did have other devices that needed to be hooked up, my answer would have to be-

"I made it as easy as possible for the other members of the family, making sure they don't have to do more than press two buttons. When I want to do something, I go to the...."

Someone else mentioned that it doesn't take long to switch the cables. True- but it takes even less time NOT to switch the cables.

  6. Re:Genesis release on Nintendo To Launch New Machine Next Year? · · Score: 1

Of course this is a good idea.

Nintendo may be selling well now, at $99. But if they got a one-year jump on the market, their next console could be the leader. And sell 60 million at $~200, rather than 9 million at $~120.

  7. Re:Fingernail sized cards? I doubt it on Replace Your Music....Again · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't think that the future of music lies in its media format. Those days are gone.

But, I agree with the parent, the big future is distribution. Of course, that is what everyone is talking about now- creating a new method to download music.

What the music is stored on will be secondary. Some people will put it on a hard-drive, some on Compact Flash, some will burn CD's.

The CD/DVD media is not too bad, but carrying around an entire CD for just one album sucks. More CD players will be able to play MP3/WMA/(insert your favorite codec here).

Who cares what the music will be stored on in retail stores- nobody will be getting their music there in 5 years anyway.

I send my pictures to Walmart.com - they're 26 cents each. They print them on real photo paper, and they always look better than what I can do on my high-end inkjet printer.

It usually takes about 3 days to get them back.

I just sent 70 pictures there a few weeks ago, cost me less than $20.

Also, doing it this way you get to decide which pictures to print- so I ended up with 70 'good ones'.

  9. Re:hmmm on Game Reviews Not Stuck In Pac Man Era? · · Score: 1

I've also benefitted from the $3 bonus at EB Games. But they also give you that bonus if you buy a game off their 'New Releases' list.

If you have a bunch of crappy games laying around the house, gather up 5-10, and bring them to EB Games when you are going to buy one of these 'bonus' games. Even a game that they were going to give you $1 for, suddenly becomes a $4 game.

What I *really* hate is not game reviews that are bad- but all the game preview hype. I don't care what the concepts sounded like while the game was at build 7. I want to know how those came out on the final build. I've seen games get hyped for months, only to score a 70% when they come out. (Which, as this thread has mentioned, is actually a mediocre game)

Also- I think that reviewers rush to get their review out- to be first, or at least not to be last.

This means that a reviewer has played the game for one day- and we are really getting his initial reaction. Simpsons Hit and Run is a good example of this. The game is really good- for a while...then it seems to get very boring. (Others may have different opinions- but people I know who have played it feel the same way)

But- as flawed as reviewers might be- I need to rely on them to determine where to spend my next $50.

Just wondering how you would possibly organize even more than 3 non-labeled CDs.

The real point of the story?

The real point from Microsoft was that Xbox Live had its busiest day ever.

Meaning that usage is going UP- not down. This is especially important now that the original Live subscribers are coming up on their renewal. They need to point out how the service is growing, not declining.

Even if the numbers were only half of what they are, it is still the GROWTH they want to concentrate on.

And, I use Xbox Live a lot.

So- I'm probably the 20%, who buys 80% of the games.

I do know someone else with an Xbox who has only purchased 1 game, and always rents. They're dragging the numbers down. (And always borrowing my games, dammit)

I just want a game that will have opponents on-line in two years when I decide to take it out again to play. So, I'm hoping that this will be a blockbuster, with a ton of sales.

Mechassault on the other hand is a great game, and now that it comes bundled with Live, that just means it will have more players- which is great. And for a crappy player like me, more NEW players is also a good thing!

I'm just out looking for one-forty-three.
