It's been a running joke among guys that often see 16 y/old teens with near "D" size boobs. "It must be the chicken. They're doing something to the chicken, man!"
To my knowledge, malware would not be able to change permissions on its own because it would have to run under the user credentials currently logged in. Even logged in with Administrative access, UAC would not allow a program to "sudo" execute on behalf of the user. In theory at least. Though I suppose the user could be tricked into the process via malware at which point they're walking their PC off a cliff anyways.
Within NTFS permissions, an explicit "Deny" will take priority over an explicit "Allow". Have they even tried flagging the file with deny writes? In theory, that should prevent modifications to the file.
It's a pain in the ass, but you could always reset the NTFS permissions via ownership and inheritance each time you wanted to make or change an entry to the host file.
I totally agree with what you've said. But I think our transition from a polygamy to monogamy is evolutionary. Because we've become extremely intelligent for a species, we have a much greater ability to inflict massive death through war. When a few men control the supply of women, societal breakdown often follows. Perhaps by agreeing to take on the practice of monogamy, we can all live in a more harmonious society which provides massive social incentives for production and life longevity.
Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It serves many purposes. One of them is keeping an original copy of genetic diversity in case GM engineering takes us down a genetic dead end.
We got communism with all the corporations owning the government.
That would be a plutocracy, not communism. But yes, I know what you mean. Corporations have bought off both Democrats and Republicans to a larger extent. But who's really to blame is is people like...YOU...and ME. Let's be honest here. By and large the average US citizen just want's to work, play , and raise a family. They don't want to spend time constantly looking after their own government. But if history has taught us anything, is that for freedom to foster and remain, eternal vigilance is the ultimate price that must be paid to maintain it. Now you tell me which is more important. Watching reality TV, or paying attention to the ass fucks we call our election officials in office?
Nukes. The Cold War was the equivalent of two men in standoff pointing a gun at each other. Who will pull the trigger first? If I shoot, will the other guy have time to shoot back? Should I lower my weapon first and risk being taken advantage of?
We had enough combined nukes to wipe out all the major cities and towns around the world several times over. I hope we (humanity) have learned a lesson here. Though don't discount an isolated nuclear incident happening in the near future (Iran vs Israel). I suppose it's still progress though for all it's worth.
We have nobody to thank but ourselves. We win the Cold War, and then let them rot because we were gloating dicks.
As someone alive when the USSR was still around. FUCK YOU! Those assholes got what they deserved! It's not our fault that their system imploded because of a failed philosophy that was communism. It wasn't called an Iron Curtain for no reason too. And it's certainly not our responsibility to hand out welfare to that nation. At the time, we were sworn ideological enemies.
Now days, Russia is Russia. Not my friend, but not my enemy. Let bygones be bygones I always say. But this time, Russia is on its own to figure this out. They might even have a civil war. I wish them luck however they resolve this issue of oppression. As for Putin, he can wave his dick all he wants. Any and every move he makes it purely for political gain.
I'm not a lawyer, but he may have a case. Joyent may in fact already know this and calculated it cheaper to settle on offering a lifetime account again --on a per user basis--. The idea betting on all other account holders shrugging it off. In the end, Joyent saves money.
I like owning the physical media. But the idea of streaming a BD disk from a hosted computer running iTunes, I could live with that so long as it's being compressed in real time. There's just no way I can stream the raw BD format bit-rate over a WiFi connection reliably in an apartment complex. The 2.4Ghz band is way too crowded as it is, and a leaky microwave from my neighbors has been known to kill all WiFi device connectivity to the internet while my ethernet PC works just fine. A Wi-Spy sweep confirmed it BTW.
I just want a Blu-ray player that will access Netflix and play a few local games. I really wish Sony could de-couple their PSN account from my ability to use the PS3 and watch Netflix. But you can't because the Netflix app and firmware update require an account.
Apple TV would be perfect except for the fact Apple would never in a million years include a Blu-ray player (direct competition to their iTunes format). Of course, I could rip Blu-ray disks in Apple TV format from my PC using AnyDVD HD, Another EAC3 to GUI, and mkvmerge GUI. But, that would be illegal... Don't do it.
Wouldn't have matter if it did work. Texas law prohibits any and all methods of obstructing license plates (that would otherwise obstruct automated OCR based technology).
I wouldn't be surprised if the next version of plates have RFID tags built into them. It would certainly make their job easier and the technology would be cheaper than it is with complicated and software. It would also cost the tax payer less money in equipment costs. Think of it as rape with lube thrown in to make the experience better. And remember to say "Thank You".
Call me old fashioned. But this whole idea throwing personal and corporate data to the "cloud" doesn't resonate well with me. I find the entire concept to be... well, unsettling from a security standpoint. Online systems have been and do continue to get hacked.
Impulse to cause a "shock and awe" factor. That's the difference. With a plane or jet, you can slam into a building causing all sorts of spectacular damage for all to see. With a car, you could at most drive into a crowd of people or pop the curb and drive into the front entrance of a storefront. It makes the afternoon local news and that's about it. Plane + Building will capture national if not international news. It's attention grabbing.
Remember that guy in Austin, TX who crashed his Piper into a building that staffed and IRS office? Ya, he was extremely pissed. He also wanted to let everyone know about it too.
In a general use of the word "orbit" I agree with you. But I suppose for the Slashdot audience, I would refer to the usage of 'sustained orbit' and 'non-sustained orbit'.
Hypothetically if the Earth was perfectly round and ultra mirror smooth with no atmosphere of any kind, you could have an object orbiting the planet mere nanometers from the surface or less. That would be a sustained orbit. An ultra LEO satellite however could rely on thrust to counter atmospheric drag so long as that trust is horizontal and not acting in any way to counter the gravity well. That is to say, it needs to be in free fall around the planet. That would be a non-sustained orbit.

The last time I saw a pussy riot was when to women were fighting over me =). Encore. Encore!

+1 This idea gets my vote!
At what point would individuality be replaced with fabrication?

No sir, I don't trust cloud technology.

People become depressed when not interacting IRL. News at 11.
And people get paid to publish this obvious shit. Sheesh!

Na. He was just ahead of his time. Gotta hand it to the Nazis, they were efficient in a sick and denigrating way.
So if I'm understanding this correctly, spintronic based RAM would have to be registered memory.
...on Mars where the strippers have three tits.
Ya, no shit! I'd cash out too while the stock is still valuable all while laughing all the way to the bank.
So it's not rape rape, just rape. There's a difference, right?
