LOL, you're not very familiar with our legal system are you? It's exceedingly biased toward women and minorities. If your a white male, you already have a legal handicap.
Regardless, if you don't have cash or a checks on hand, use a credit card. It acts as a financial firewall between you and your checking account. In fact, this is how I perform all on-line transactions from purchases to paying utility bills. Should there be fraud (and it's happened to me), report the issue to your bank and request a new credit card number. Lather, rinse, repeat.
When available, I try and donate through Folding@Home. It will cost you in an increased power bill (try running it 24/7 for a month, made a huge dent). Not that I mind. But if and when people decide to donate to this project, CPU cycles are not free.
You control your productivity and if your employer don't like it, they'll get someone else.
And they will have no problem succeeding in this market. Hell, they might even dismiss you from the company so they can hire two of you for the price of one. Unless you're an exceptional employee with extraordinary talent, now is the time to be BUSTING YOUR ASS OFF!!! That's right. Now more than ever, employees around the world must constantly prove their value to remain employed.
I could be wrong, but all production CPUs will load updated microcode at POST (stored in BIOS ROM) if available. In short, microcode is like a patch to correct CPU errata. Engineering samples are like beta CPUs though, right? It would stand to reason that no such microcode is available for them from a consumer (non testing board) Motherboard.
Help Desk is also a critical role in an IT department. It acts as the oil to keep the machine running as smooth as possible. They also provide the first line of support for the next guys; The Server Admins. The servers either work or they don't... for the most part. But the most critical task of the Server Admin is to ensure backups are being performed and ensure restores are possible. If a server bombs or data is deleted, these guys are the ones that end up getting reamed out by the CxO. Not a fun situation to be in.
So...what "system" will provide more winners over a free market? To my knowledge, no such system exists. When the opportunity presents itself, we choose to be lazy instead of informed and active. That's the problem. Human nature. Good luck trying to change millions of years of evolution!
For a moment, I'll entertain the idea you are 100% correct and that IT will stabilize. However, not for the foreseeable future. Depending on your age, you might not have the luxury to retire from this industry by the time that starts to happen.
We are all playing a game of "what-ifs". But if the past and present is any indication of the future, I plan on not mapping out my career on the idea of future stability. Such a notion seems like pure fantasy now.
Well I don't agree. And Moore's law may not be the only limitation. With new technologies, and the technologies developed as a result of the previous technologies so far has proved you wrong. We've already moved from the vacuum tube, transistor, silicon chip, and now on the cusp of quantum computing technologies. The latter will usher in a whole other subset of programming and processing philosophies.
If you think IT will become more stable and mature, you're in for a rude awakening. You best be advised to hold on to those reins a bit tighter.
To be fair, some of us try to strike a balance between the sum of a paycheck, and a day-to-day quality of life. No point in making six figures if you become stressed to the max and die young from a heart attack. Although, one could also become under stress from not making enough to be financially supportive to their family and themselves.
When I was young, I dreamed of earning lots of money. Now that I'm older, I realized everything has a cost to it. Life is always about a give and take. If I could trade some of my paycheck (within reason) for an improved quality of life (less stress), I would do it in a heartbeat.
Jocks have always been a PITA for everyone that was *not* at Jock themselves. That said however, Jocks are nothing more than geeks of the human body.
Funny that computer geeks have no problem programming and performing other advanced mental tasks, yet inflict serious damage and neglect the health of their own body. Try using those brains to drop the weight and improve your cardio. If the Jocks can do it, no reason you can't too.
but the IT world is so incredibly diverse and changing, how would you have any kind of certification for it
That's all you had to say, really. When you work in IT, you're on the frontier paving the way for new models for management of information through technology. It's ever changing to reflect the culture of how business is conducted around the world. By that standard (or lack there of), we are COWBOYS! And just like the Cowboy that enjoys a wide range of freedom on the range, we also have to accept the fact we must endure the cold and raining days too...without shelter.
Stability (by definition) is the antithesis to the IT industry. If it's stability you're looking for, become a medical doctor, or an engineer. Keep in mind that stability does not guarantee employment, but rather a clear vision of an occupation now and into the future.
On one hand, an employee is supposed to be an extension to the corporation. On the other, sometimes employees are designated to be "the face" of the company. Usually this involves sales. But I know first hand in the IT industry, it's often an employee that has a few designated "regulars" that he/she will often work closely with. I can definitely understand that after a long business relationship; it's often that the client will have strong ties with that sole employee and not the corporation he/she works for.
Sounds like either management or sales needs to get more involved in being the "face", or pay technicians more money to keep them from jumping ship. A third option is to rotate techs among all clients, but that usually leads to inefficiencies and frustration for the client. Having to work with one network internally is difficult enough. Having a tech learn several hundred networks is a logistical nightmare.
FYI I work in the local outsourced IT industry. We're a small company that mainly deals with small businesses and start-ups.
Do you have a suggestion as to where %DEITY% came from?
Nope. It's pure faith. I acknowledge that and keep both science and religion separate. Perhaps i'm in the minority in this regard?
Why does there need to be a reason?
Why does there not need to be a reason? From my perspective, the natural order of things should be zero, zilch, nothing, nada. Yet, our universe is filled with all sorts of dimensions, laws, particles...etc. Why so complicated? Why is there even a universe at all???
It was worse than that even. After reading up on the Salem witch trials, I'm amazed science was still practiced long after that. I mean, all that technology. It must be instruments of Satan's will. Of course, I exaggerate (or not)... But you get the idea.
How so? I accept that the Big Bang happened, and can be logically explained. However, I also believe there was a higher power at play that created it. Namely %DEITY%.
Think about it. How can *something* come from absolute nothing. No time, no space. It never existed. Mathematically, nothing is represented as 0 (zero). Yet, something, somehow, someway, the status quo changed. Why? Was it a branch from the multiverse? Who created that. At what point do you acknowledge there was a genesis (if at all) and what caused it and for what reason?
I seriously doubt it. While I can access the Slashdot homepage and articles, I get a 503 when I attempt to access any user profile (including my own). I'm 99% sure it's site related. I couldn't tell you though as to why, I'm not a web/db developer.
Commercial space science can take the risks that NASA can't
Call me a pessimist, but I don't buy it. Once people start dieing because of commercial space missions, expect a heaping dose of regulation and federal/state politics playing favorites. And that's the real killer of it all. It's politics, not funding or talent in the US that's the ultimate deciding factor.
No, if anything I see progress being made in Russia, India, and perhaps China. As an American, I'm disgusted at the weak and spineless politicians that don't have the fortitude to embrace a risk/reward attitude. We simply can't coddle everyone or we as a nation will be hamstrung! In fact, some (such as myself) would say that we already are. Risks must always be taken among those that wish to be on the front lines.
LOL, you're not very familiar with our legal system are you? It's exceedingly biased toward women and minorities. If your a white male, you already have a legal handicap.
We (men) already have a bad reputation. What's this "getting" part, we got way past that a long ass time ago!
Regardless, if you don't have cash or a checks on hand, use a credit card. It acts as a financial firewall between you and your checking account. Sure would be nice if Microsoft and Google teamed up to help fund NASA. Think of it as their down-payment for improved PR and marketing.
I can dream, can't I?
When available, I try and donate through Folding@Home. It will cost you in an increased power bill (try running it 24/7 for a month, made a huge dent). Not that I mind. But if and when people decide to donate to this project, CPU cycles are not free.
To donate by CPU, go http://folding.stanford.edu/
To donate by direct funding, go http://pgnet.stanford.edu/goto/foldinggift
It's called Jackpot Justice.

I agree with you. However, I'm sure the defense will just add this new study to the hopper when pleading "temporary insanity".
And if you perform a racial hate-crime, you can now bang on that drum. "Your honor, I'm genetically inclined toward violence against X-Race"
Nice, real nice. Sheesh...

Obama is a statist overall. It's about power and control. A direct reflection of his modus operandi.
Question: What are tits?
Answer: It's braille for "touch here".
