For spyware infestation, MalwareBytes is pretty good. But if you have a really nasty *virus* infection, I'm afraid you might be SOL. Some of the newer ones that mask as fake anti-virus (giving users a bogus infection report) will really root your system FUBAR. In that case, your stuck with one option; backing up user data, then nuke-n-pave the hard drive.

Remember that time you first installed your OS (Windows for example)? It runs snappy, consumes little space, and free from major issues. But over time, it can become slow, bloated, and corrupted. While sometimes we can perform a general cleanup and apply patches, it's often better to format/reinstall from scratch all over again.
All this talk about solar and wind energy being "free" and building these giant wind farms and turbines has had me wondering about something that I never see addressed. Has anyone considered the meteorological effects of removing all that energy from the atmosphere?
Simply put, any solar radiation that is not used here on Earth is thrown back into space in the form of IR. As for Wind, the natural landscape (trees, mountains, valley...etc) already puts drag on available wind energy. All these technologies allow us to do is tap into that "solar waste" that otherwise wouldn't haven't been used.
It's a moot point IMHO. We should be using breeder nuclear reactors anyways. The extra heat from the fission reaction would radiate into space in the form of IR too. No problemo.

The hardware abstraction doesn't matter if all the virus does is make read/write calls using the OS like any other application. In other words, if Windows has a volume mounted, then the virus will be able to see it and whack it out of commission.
