Well, as a matter of fact, there shouldn't be a distinction. You are correct in that anyone could be sued for walking onto your property whether by primitive means (i.e. walking) or by more "magical" modern transportation such as a telephone, things that our forefathers never had to deal with. The same laws should apply to these modern conveniences that apply to walking to your door. If someone knocks on your door, and then refuses to leave, they are trespassing. Likewise, you have a right to put up a "No Trespassing" sign, thus serving them advance warning. How is a person using a telephone any different?
Actually, I am a Libertarian, and as a Libertarian I believe in a homeowner's right to defend their property. Therefore, I think that while maybe the government getting involved isn't the best solution, it is one that might work. In a Libertopia I would say that people should be legally allowed to charge every telemarketer with trespassing and have them arrested, and also be able to sue them.
Or, we could go the easy route and make it legal to shoot them, as they are coming onto our property without permission! ^_~
Or better yet, configure progman so it is usable (include all of the folders on the Start menu) and then set it to boot instead of Explorer. Tell the user they must have the new "Windows 3.1 downgrade virus".
If it's SOOOOOOO open, why do you have to buy a Mac to run it? Huh? Huh? Huh?
Because Apple is a hardware company. That's where the revenue comes from for them. They've always seen themselves as a hardware company and probably always will. So, if you could run OS X on anything you wanted including X86, Apple would lose money, and there would be no more OS X, or Apple. Darwin could continue, but Darwin is on X86 right now. (...if you don't know what Darwin is, I suggest doing a little research.)
Yes, but once again, if a power outage lasts for a while and there is no way to pump fuel due to a the lack of power for the pumps, the generators will fail eventually.
Actually, I was stuck in downtown Detroit when the outage hit, with no gas in my tank. I was just about to fill up and then *BAM!* gridlock hit. Me having to spend the night in downtown Detroit isn't the end of the world, no. However, people out there need respirators to live. Hospitals need power to save lives, and with no power for the gas pumps, a mutil-day outage is a huge deal, unless you enjoy having 3rd world medical care.
Oh, and let's not forget all the raw sewage they had to pump into Lake Erie due to the lack of power so it didn't start backing up into people's homes. It's good for the ecosystem, really! Oh, wait, it ended up backing up into peoples homes anyways.
I don't think people were crying over spilt milk or melted ice cream. They were pissed because they couldn't buy food, go to the bank, and then on top of it all they had to clean other people's excrement out of their basements.
Anyone here know what a stock photo is? I suggest doing a search on the Web if you don't. Oh, and I prefer Metacrawler to Google, you insensitive clod! But, that's just IMHO. Wow, I'm getting a lot of Slashdot randomness here. Now all I have to do is talk about Soviet Russia, ??? -> Profit and of course, that.sig I don't have. Satisfied, CowboyNeal?
Did anyone else feel like they were watching the Jetsons when they saw that flash video? Some of this stuff is so cool, I think for a second, "Nah, that can only happen in the future, like after the year 2001 or something.... Oh."
I think his house is the one with the pool. You will have to zoom in, it's in the center of the screen. Of course, just hit "Street Map" to see where this is. I wish I was really in a plane so I could spit on his house.
For file systems I use symbolic links in a column viewed filesytem. I really like what a company formerly known as NeXT has done with some of their products. Their software for pictures and music both have a "Library". From there you can drag songs or pictures into "Playlists" (music) or "Albums" (photos).
Very cool.
As for software, I use OmniGraffle and OmniOutliner from OmniGroup. OmniOutliner is especially simple, yet unique. I wonder why no one else has an idea organizer that is so incredible? I couldn't do my job without it. Well, I could, but I'd use a lot of paper or spend a lot of time in OpenOffice messing around with things.
No, Microsoft doesn't want people on the Mac to use Virtual PC to emulate non-MS x86 operating systems. When Virtual PC was owned by Connectix, there was a Red Hat and IBM PC-DOS version of VPC. Now there isn't. That's the game they're playing. The point the previous poster was making was that there is no OS choice on PowerPC, which is untrue. They also were saying that you don't get bang for your buck on hardware, also very untrue. Is there some other point I missed?
No, you couldn't squash it, except maybe if your PC came with a FireWire Bulldozer. First, RTFA. Do you see those benchmarks? Second, not only do you get your choice of OS on a G5 (OS X, Linux, etc.) you can also run Office natively, write programs natively that compile to X86, but you can also run X11 applications side by side with Mac OS apps, all on a system running with a BSD Core. The fact that you said, "my choice of OS" cracks me up. Do you even realize that OS X is based on BSD and is open source at the core? Need your precious Windows? Ever heard of Virtual PC? (Which will be compiled for the G5 soon according to Microsoft and Apple.)
I don't know about you, but I'm a goth. Part of that, to me, means I think for myself. In this case, it means no Intel, and no AMD. IMHO, PowerPC and *NIX are the future.
Now with his Alienware pC, when inspiration hits him he will be able to make that awesome Neverwinter Nights module he'd been thinking about for days. No matter how cool his Mac is he won't be able to do that...
You are so right. By comparing Macs to Alienware people are simply stating that there are few PC's that are truly comparable to the Mac out there.
Oh, and if you want a gaming system and don't think there's enough games for the Mac, go get a PS2. I hear there are a lot of games for that platform.
Ten years ago I wanted to see in a decade an Apple computer that doesn't use Mac OS. I got my wish. I'm on the BSD based OS X now.
I used my IIgs with it's 1200 baud modem until 1998 when I got a 300MHz Pentium II with the just-released Windows 98. I felt really dirty until I installed Linux.
Now I have a 14" iBook with 640MB RAM and 802.11b, so life is good. Now if only I could get Apple to stop calling it a "Mac".
The NeXT inspired Grab application outputs in TIFF format. I, like many people, have never been able to find the key-combos for screen capture in the OS X documentation, so I just use Grab.
(But, hey, now I guess I know what the combo is since people have listed it here! Thanks!)
The FCC is given power from the Federal Government of the USA, which argues that it is regulating "Interstate Commerce", as per the Constitution. What most people don't realize is that in order for a radio station to fall under FCC jurisdiction, from a legal standpoint, the station needs to broadcast outside of a state's borders. (The only exception being if a state has made a law that the FCC has power in that state.) Otherwise, it is Intrastate Commerce, not Interstate Commerce. If you're in Michigan and your signal doesn't reach Canada, Wisconsin, Ohio, or Indiana, your station cannot be under the FCC's evil thumb! I know of at least one pirate station that has used this argument and has won in court. So, even if low powered stations can be regulated by the FCC, it doesn't matter as long as your station's power is low enough not to leave the state.
The FCC screwed up FM from day one. Signal bleed on FM is.5 MHz, and the stations are all.2 MHz apart. I seriously doubt a bunch of low powered stations will make FM any worse than it already is.
"Are You a Sharecropper? If you're developing software for the Windows platform, yes. Or for the Apple platform"
"How Not to be a Sharecropper If you develop server-side software that runs on Unix (by which I mean any platform that runs bash and creates processes with fork()"
What about Apple's OS X, which runs on BSD-based Darwin? (An open source operating system.)
What about Safari, the browser created by Apple from the Konqueror Open Source project? They took open source code and made it better. Anyone could have done it, not just those holding the keys to the OS.
It's obvious that the author is not as informed as he'd lead you to believe. Either that, or he doesn't care about leaving out evidence which refutes his argument.
Actually, if you look in WinXP, you'll find none other than...
Microsoft Bob!
Good ol' Microsoft attempts again to copy how "cute" Mac OS is (in this case OS X) and fails, miserably. It's sad that they have to resort to reusing failed cartoon charecters....and they have the courage to call it an operating system!
Prime OCR is what I have always seen in corporate sectors. At both Ford Motor Company, and Pfizer Drugs it is used for OCR on very complex technical documents.

For when you're old and gray and want to show your kids what happened before nonsense addresses, first go to a nonsense site.
Then, go to this site, which is sure to become a favorite very quickly, for historical purposes.
"See, son, this is what happened back before VeriSign took over the unregistered Net!"
"Really, Dad?"
Safari chirps: "Server not found."

I totally agree with you, and that's all I have to say on the subject. I really don't feel like being flamed today.
Thomas Jefferson would, had he been alive today, agree with both of us. Patriots do not watch as their freedoms wither away.

I live in Detroit. 70 in the slow lane doesn't get you honked at, it gets you shot. Try 80. That's a honk. 100, and you're normal.
By the way, rest of the world, we're talking miles per hour here, not km.
