I have read that Windows 1.0 had at one time bit for bit Macintosh icons. I have no idea as to whether that is true or not, but because I had heard it from so many sources, it inspired me to add "complete with Mac icons" to my post.
According to several sources, Microsoft has been working on Mac software for more than a year. Early on, Mac project leader Steve Jobs took the Mac plans to Microsoft founder Bill Gates, sources said. Gates reportedly agreed not to produce similar mouse-based software for a year, but with Mac behind schedule, Microsoft was able to jump into the market in 1983 with its own mouse programs for the IBM PC.
I wondered if I would ever find out exactly how Microsoft was ever able to take the Mac GUI, complete with Mac icons. There have been many conflicting stories over the years. Since this is from 1984, I tend to think we might have finally found something accurate.
Linux doesn't need games. You think I bought an OS X machine for games? Ha. I bought it to get real work done. I bought it to have fun with music and photos and etc. What Linux needs is ease of use, and real innovation. Not copying a Start Menu, Dock, or Expose, but something really original and useful. It's getting there, but I agree. It will take five years for enough applications and an easy enough to use distro to be out there.
As soon as people wake up to what DRM really is, they'll stop paying for it. There will be so many hacks out there to kill it (De-CSS/iTunes DRM) that it will become as prevalent and annoying as spam, until people wake up. Then it will go back into the history book filled with bad ideas, such as coal powered automobiles.

This all goes back to the original Macintosh and Jobs thinking it was a piece of artwork that shouldn't be tampered with. Most people want a computer they can improve, much like people that mod and tune their cars.
Obviously, it's not that big of a deal to most people, or they wouldn't be buying laptops in larger and larger quantities. I expect the old "you can't upgrade a Mac" argument to be history in a couple years.
Then again, lot's of people have no idea OS X exists.
For those that don't know, people in the lower penninsula of Michigan indicate where they live by pointing to their right hand, as Michigan is shaped similarly to a mitten. This was done prominantly by Michael Moore at the Cannes Film Festival, shown on the Bowling for Columbine special features. There are many other celbrities from this state that you will catch pointing to their hands in this manner. Now you know why.
Sure they do. A couple I am friends with are engaged, and they own both a house in Metro Detroit, and a large farm that they manage in Canada. A different couple I know bought their house a couple years ago at 21 and 18 years of age. They both bought it with money they saved from their own jobs, making $50,000 a year, and with zero college.
I also rent my own house (I could buy if I wanted to, but I plan on moving soon anyways), I'm 21, I make good money, and I do not have a degree. College is not for everyone.
Ever hear of Bill Gates? Steve Jobs?
For each guy like them there are plenty more making a slightly above average salary that through their own ingenuity and self-education didn't go through college. You'll never hear about them on the news, because it's not a huge deal.
What makes you think I'm ignorant of the porn industry? Your conclusion is laughable.
Because you have obviously had no experience with it whatsoever. If you have, you haven't stated as such.
Porn is all about no commitments and so is unnatural for humans. Porn abandons the female after you've had your satisfaction and requires nothing more from you. Porn is about grabbing all of the benefits of human sexuality and paying none of the (very considerable) costs. Porn is irresponsible and ultimatly dangerous.
Would you feel better if your wife made a living having SEX with other men?
Obviously, you don't know anyone in an open relationship or marriage. I do. For most responsible adults, it's not a problem. Some people aren't in to it. That's fine. That doesn't discount that some people really don't care if the person they are with goes and has sex with someone else. You'd be surprised how many marriages it can save. Perfect example would be a couple I know that is engaged. The male can't maintain an erection anymore and the female is a diagnosed nympho. Because she's allowed to sleep with whomever she wants, she is able to stay satisfied sexually, and both she and her mate have a completely healthy relationship. They are very happy together and are very commited. She would never dream of leaving him for any of the men she sleeps with. She loves him. He loves her, and doesn't mind her being with other men at all. He knows it makes her happy, and he isn't the jealous type. He knows that when he goes to bed every night for the rest of his life, she'll be there at his side, as she has been for a very long time. I don't expect you do understand any of these alternative lifestyles, they obviously are not for you. Just realize that for some people it not only works, it makes them happy.
Now that you've felt free to call me a fanatic, let me ask you something. Would you want your daughter involved in porn? Would you feel better if your wife made a living having SEX with other men? Do you think porn is a good career for your Mother?
To answer your question, no, I wouldn't care. I'd be amused.
ddimas says: "Do you really think that pornographers give a s***t about what the models want? They're entire concern is $$$! If they thought they could get away with it (and make lots of MONEY) they'd be doing snuff flicks. Granted there are a few models who enjoy their work, but there are just as many (if not more) who are somehow (boyfriend/pimp, drugs, violence, psycological abuse, some evil combination of all of the previous) coerced."
My question is relavent because you are making assumptions about an industry you know nothing about. Yes, there are some bad apples, just like anywhere else. The Catholic church has it's bad apple's too, doesn't it? Conculsion: pr0n is not automatically evil. Far from it. There is nothing wrong with pleasure as long as your method of deriving pleasure is done in a responsible manner.
You're probably going to discount this, as I don't have a link or source handy to back this up, but I learned a long time ago that a study done by a University had determined that rapists look at far less pornography than the average male. Makes sense. All those sexual frustrations building up with no place to go... Probably why all those priests were molesting little boys. The clergy can't marry, nor can they have sex. So, they flip out. You, my friend, are trying to deny what Nature wants us to have.
In every species of animal on the planet, menstruation and ovulation occur at the same moment, so that males will know it is time to procreate. Every species, that is, except ours. In humans, women menstruate at the time they are least likely to get pregnant. It's almost as if God is holding up a big sign, begging us to have sex. It relives stress. It is good exercise. It's fun. Just because you don't fully understand it's intricacies does not mean that you should be damning everyone else who does. Take your fanaticism and shove it.
I've dated plenty of gals in pr0n, and I also know guys that run pr0n websites. Most pornographers do care about what the models want. They just thought it would be more fun to take pictures of naked sexy women than it would be to, say, work as a construction worker, a computer programmer working on macros all day, or a burger filpper. Who can blame them? They care about the models more than they care about the money because in most cases the models are their friends. There is so much competition in the pr0n industry that I seriously doubt people go into it to get rich anymore. There just isn't enough money. People do it because it's more interesting than your normal run-of-the-mill career.
So, as I do know a lot of people involved with this industry, my question for ddimas is, do you?
I totally agree. I'm in pretty much the same boat, too. My parents went from total control freaks (my sister got grounded, or worse, when she was 17 for listening to Madonna's "Like a Virgin" on the radio) to chilling out by the time I was of age. My mother chilled out because I battled her constantly so that I could control my own life and make my own mistakes. My father chilled out because he "gave up on me" when I was getting into trouble constantly in Junior High, and then, worse yet, stopped getting into trouble but became a "freak" in high school.
Ironic how when I looked normal all those kids got into trouble, but all the Gothic kids got good grades and didn't do drugs, etc.
Anyways, it wasn't until my Dad "gave up on me" and I was able to make my own mistakes that I finally did so. It was then that I started to excel. I got horrid grades in high school, when my folks were constantly telling me when and where I had to do my homework, when they tried to watch my every move. In college I got nothing lower than a B+ on anything. Now I'm 21, have had a job in the tech industry for years, and have my own house. If my parents wouldn't have backed the fuck off and let me make my own mistakes, I'd surely be like my childhood best friend.
His mother controlled his every move, and he let her. I told him to fight back, and he wouldn't. She had complete control of him. Now he's an adult, and he lives with his uncle and works at a Radio Shack. At 22. He has no ambition to get a place of his own. He has no ambition to get an education. He has no desire to go anywhere in life at all.
His apendix ruptured recently becuase he refused to go to the doctor. He's afraid of doctors; his mother conditioned him to be that way. She conditioned him to be afraid of her, and of everything else in his life. So he is.
She wouldn't let him grow up when he lived with her. So, at 22, his maturity is years behind where it should be. He's just now starting to grow.
Parents, if you love your children, tell them why you are the way you are. Tell them why you believe what you do. Tell them you're always there if they need advise. When your children come, make sure you're available. They will come.
If they think of you as a friend and a parent, (not just a friend, that means you have no authority) they will surely have an easier time talking with you, laughing with you, and learning from you.
Be honest with them. If you fucked up, tell them all the details, and the lessons you learned.
Some parents think that if they tell their kids they smoked pot that their kids will want to go do it too. Well, not always. Maybe they will, but if you tell them about the stoner in school you were friends with that ended up living in a trailer smoking dope his whole life, floating from McD's to Burger King and back, they'll listen. Maybe they'll make the same mistakes you did. If they do, well, you turned out okay, right? If they don't, well, they learned from your mistake and they won't have to make it again on their own. Congrats.
At least when they get into the real world, you know they'll be able to think for themselves.
Both of my grandfathers were Vice-Presidents of companies. They also both died before I was able to talk. It's in my genes, I just don't have anyone around to discuss it with.
"Is it really completely virus-free? I find it hard to believe that there aren't any Mac viruses out there. Anyhow, being more secure through obscurity is something that comes with any non-Windows platform. It's certainly an advantage, but it's difficult to say that this is somehow a failing of Windows."
Yes, it is 100% virus free. There has never been a virus released in the wild for Mac OS X. In case you don't know, Mac OS X and Mac OS are two totally different operating systems. OS X runs on a BSD base.
"The Windows naming scheme may be a bit confusing, but MacOS is hardly better - especially since this operating system started out at version 10, taking the same name as a previous different OS. This seems an odd point to pick on - both companies are guilty of naming their products for marketing rather than for technical reasons."
Nope. Mac OS Classic never had a version 10. The last release of Classic was 9.2, and that came out after OS X was initially released. As for the "point" issue, the upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP (a large upgrade) was WinNT 5.0 to WinNT 5.1. I suggest everyone start using the version numbers with Windows, it makes things easier. As for Apple, Mac OS started with I believe version 7. The operating systems before that were older Apple operating systems, going back to Apple OS 1, on the original Apple 1 computer, built by Woz in his mother's garage. The numbering system is measuring Apple's OS's, not Mac OS's. (Frankly I wish they'd stop calling them Macs in the first place, it'd get across the point that OS X is a whole new OS.)
"I can't say I have this trouble, but maybe that's because I'm on 2000 and not XP."
The author is referring to Windows Messenger, a "feature" of XP designed to destroy AIM. OS X's iChat AIM client can be uninstalled (or the Safari browser, or anything else really) by dragging the application's icon to the trash, and emptying it.
"This seems an entirely subjective comment. Macs are one of the platforms that I've felt least at home on, but I realise that this isn't an objective point."
The author is considered an expert by the nespaper or else they wouldn't be publishing his opinion. That's all the whole article is - his opinion.
"Well the point is, I don't. Pro-Mac articles often try to polarise the computing world into a Mac-vs-Windows argument. I'm not really pro-Windows at all, despite what I've written here - but there are a plenty of other non-mainstream OSs I like or would like to investigate."
Good for you. The last thing we need on this Earth are more people feeling they are forced into using Windows.
Starting X11 in Panther is a similar process to starting OS 9. If you run an X11 app you must start the X11 environment. If you place X11 in your startup items, it will start when you boot and thus will save you the headache of waiting when you're ready to run an X11 app.
I wonder if Apple's failure to bring iTMS to market in non-US nations is due to the patent out there described here. If that is the case, given the slim profit margin in selling music online, I'd have to think any non-US ventures would be doomed to failure until either all the companies buy (eat) one another or go bankrupt, or somehow the patent is challeneged.
Actually, I'm programming in VBA for Excel v.X on the Mac right now at work. I can tell you this, there is a ton of Windows code in Office for the Mac. They had to do that in order to get VBA to behave properly. If the UI was copied so well from Windows to Mac, then why is there a "Windows; Cascade" option in Excel on a Macintosh? Don't you dare call it a "feature"!
I'd have to say that since the Mac's UI was there first and Windows is a poor attmept to copy it, all of the ways applications like QuickTime behave are actually "proper" and it's all the other Windows applications that are behaving wrong. But, that would be stupid at this point, as M$ holds dominance in the OS world. So, I will agree that Apple needs to chill in some UI areas on Windows. I don't think it'll be a problem with iTunes like it is in Windows QuickTime, though. That program doesn't really incorporate a lot of aspects of any particular OS into it. It's more like working your home stereo, only easier.
The idea of Microsoft being innocent in this case, though, is laughable. They are just as guilty as Apple, if not moreso, in making applications behave incorrectly in a particular OS.
I bought the Treo 300 as soon as it came out last Autumn, and I've been very impressed. The same day I bought the Treo I bought a 700 MHz G3 iBook, 14"/40 GB/640 MB RAM. The two devices are awesome together. Honestly, though, if you judged based on time spent using each device, I would have paid thousands for the Treo and hundreds for the iBook. I never anticipated how useful my Treo would become. It's always with me, morning, noon, and night, and it has never let me down. It does everything I need it to, and even lets me get online at about 128-160 or more kbps on Sprint's high speed data network, either on my laptop or on the Treo itself.
Now I'm debating what to do. While the Treo is wonderful I don't like the Palm OS. I find it to be unelegent and, frankly, ugly. It's also very buggy and crashes on me regularly. I used to use WinCE, and none of my devices that used WinCE crashed a single time. It also looks better than Palm OS. Frankly, I wonder why Microsoft doesn't just start shipping WinCE on all their desktop systems instead of WinXP. It seems to be more stable. Back on the subject here, I'm torn. My use of the Treo is probably 35% PDA, 35% Phone, and 30% Wireless Modem for the iBook. I'm thinking of switching to the Hitachi G-1000, which runs on M$'s WinCE platform.
I like WinCE. It's much more elegent than Palm OS. The G-1000, on the other hand, is far from elegent. It's very utilitarian, but it gets the job done. It's large, bulky, heavy. I have trouble imagining using it as a phone, but I had trouble imagining using the Treo 300 as a phone at first, too. I later discovered that due to it's large size, the 300 got better reception than most cell phones. Remember those monsters from the '80s? They were huge phones for a reason: beter reception. I don't know about you guys, but I don't need a phone the size of my thumb. If it works, that's the most important thing. If it looks cool, too, great, but I'm not going to sacrifice usefulness on such an expensive device for "looking cool", which seems to be what Handspring has done with the 600. I'm scared that if I get a 600 that it will be too small. I don't like the lack of a cover on either unit, so I figure I might as well get the G-1000 if I'm not going to get a cover, as it has a larger resolution and better-looking screen. Is anyone here with a Treo 300 also debating between a G-1000 and a Treo 600? Anyone else care to post their impressions of either of the devices? Rumor has it that bluetooth is coming to the Treo. How about the Hitachi? Can the G-1000 be used as a modem for a laptop?
Ten years of friendship? Obviously her friendship didn't mean much if she's already banging your best buddy. Sounds like it may be time to find some new friends. Easier said than done, I know.
Listen to me, I've been there... If you want to hear about some of the crazy shit I have to put up with, I link to my site above.
Oh, and just so I don't get modded offtopic, I like connecting to the Net over my cell phone using Sprint PCS, which is usually at about dual ISDN speed. If my friends and I are ever at a coffee shop or park with no Wi-Fi, I turn on Ad Hoc sharing over my 802.11b card, and everyone is able to get online! Funfunfun. I plan on doing it at PSG next Summer, which is a fun Pagan festival held in the middle of nowhere. (aka Ohio)

(aka Ohio)
My wife never asks to get lucky with me.
In fact, I don't even have a wife. I have a girlfriend
Actually, she just broke up with me a couple hours ago. *sobs*

Next thing you know, Ask Jeeves will be a robot that'll give you a massage, and Babelfish will be a hologram in a tank! They'll all be pals, I'm sure.
Jeeves, I need a massage. Could you please... What do you mean I haven't fed Babel lately?
