We are in a battle by default. It doesn't matter if you, or I or anyone else doesn't think we are. Microsoft, among others, is doing everything they can to discredit our favorite Operating System and lets face it, if they win then Linux,as great as a hobby it will become, will simply not be something someone can make a living with by supporting, programming for and administrating. When Microsoft takes over all servers that count then I hope you still have fun developing your toy that no one else cares about anymore because it became irrelevant. We need to keep Linux relevant. Do you get it?
It's good that they are putting all their resources into the enterprise segment, specializing in servers mainly. This is where Linux needs to be. Spreading Linux (meaning resources, the people working with it) too thin at this point, between servers and desktops, is the wrong choice currently. We are in a battle with Microsoft mainly. Microsoft is the undisputed king of desktops. We need to keep making Linux the choice for server and back-office type applications as this is it's strongest position right now and the one place it really can compete with Microsoft.
Microsoft has, in essence, infinite money to put into anything it wants. It currently wants the server market, badly. If they can control this then they will can make communications propriety and fulfill their dreams of world domination, thus have a total monopoly over the desktop and server as they can make them integrate seamlessly and become the sole designer of all applications that require the server-client model and beyond.
Linux currently has a fabulous market share within servers and the fight must continue to make these numbers higher. Spending all the time and resources on desktop issues, such as ease of use just is not the fight to be in right now. It's a fight that really, at the moment or any time soon, cannot be won. The fight for servers can be won.
The developers and contributers to Linux and Linux applications should be doing everything we can to make Linux the de-facto standard on the server. It would be foolish to not recognize our great fortune with our position in the server market. This is why I think Redhat is not only making a wise business move, but also one that will help Linux in general.
You every notice that every time a new technology comes out it is always claimed that it is inexpensive and easy to produce. Then when I hand over my credit card I get the feeling it was very hard to make and the materials are more rare than living Giant Squid sightings.
C'mon, you know you want to tell me about R&D, profit, etc...go ahead, reply...I dare you.:P
Yeah, but companies like Microsoft (M$) use their power and greed to crush otherwise great innovation and from a moral standpoint this is wrong. They are a case of capitalism being either great or flawed, depending on your point of view. The problem right now is everyone is so invested in them they become an auto-monopoly that we won't break because by default we are all in bed with them. Oh well, I would rather spend my time worrying about myself than what they are up to. Linux ain't going anywhere and that's all I care about in the end I guess.
If only we could harness all of our wasted energy. Like those watches that gain power by your movement. Devices should be looking to get energy from as many sources as possible. Solar, moving etc. Do I have the answer on how to do this? Hell no, I'm just some punk on Slashdot with crazy ideas that are technically impossible. When *they* create wireless power, I'm definitely investing in their business.
True, they do know a lot about their drugs, more than doctors as they should and there are some great ones out there that can identify what you are taking and if something else is better for it etc. And yes, they are not a substantial reason for why drugs cost so much. But, their as well as the whole medical field being extremely over paid is part of the reason and they are no exception. But, they are very over paid none the less. Thing is, it's a well kept secret...well, not so much anymore but still. When someone finds out how much they make they are shocked. They usually assume they are the same $10.00/hr tech that works in a drug store and can become one with tech college (2 year) type education.
Now, I don't hate on them as I don't hate on anyone making a living on a scam...have to do what you have to do. Those ultra sound techs start at 70K as well...and trust me, with my science degree, getting accepted into ultra sound or similar type school (one and a half year program your hospital provides if you are accepted) is a snap. It's my backup plan for when my software developing job moves to India or China one day. I love engineering and is why I do it, but for the money those hospital folks make (and they keep getting more and more...it's like the 90's for software developers) I could easily subsidize my computer hobby with it. Not to mention those jobs never move. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!
Pharmacists are extremely over paid. They start at around 75K and go well past 100K. They are one reason drugs cost so much. Granted, they have "tough" school, but their job consists of being able to count to 30 and read. And they have their assistants (just some bloke) do most of this. I could argue many doctors are over paid as well as most of the medical industry, but I'l focus on pharmacists.
I saw him about 4 years ago when I lived in Madison, Wisconsin. His show is pretty popular around here and has been for awhile. He has 3 "robots"; one that is "string bot", "percussion bot" and the ape. The guitar or string bot is more of a harp and it has mechanical picks, one for each string that is triggered by him (the human who is captured) He is in bondage, center stage and has a keyboard controller thing and has all these foot pedals that he controls drum bot with. Each peddle triggers a drum. You can imagine it's pretty intense on the stage. The whole show is he's in bondage (captured) and the robots make demands from him, he tries to disobey but they torture him into playing. As for the music, it's loud and fast. All in all, it's a great show and generally costs about $5.00 for admission. I saw him play with the "Lonesome Organist", a man with an old organ playing hockey game like music with a twist. Great stuff. I still wear my "Capture! By Robots" t-shirt. Oh, and for the ape? He's a robot in a gorilla suit that has a tambourine on his head and has sympathy for capture man. It's a great alter-ego.
Got them in Vietnam for nothing. Probably fed a few people though as I'm sure I paid more than the natives would, and that's OK with me. Of course I will have to buy the "American" ones next year if only to hear Lucas interviews on how Episodes 1,2,3 were botched. Ahh, at least Return of the King is almost upon us.
Those graphic designers are hard to get to switch to something new. Many know flash and Action Script so well, I can't see them switching. I'm guessing M$ will somehow disable Flash support in their browser.
Sparkle? Couldn't they come up with a better name? The blatant rip-off of not only ideas, but names, is insane.
"what if you prefer lossless music, with coverart, booklet and printed media you can hold in your hand?"
Then CD's are not for you. If you are that interested in music, which I assume you really are not else you would have stated this, I recommend you get into vinyl records. The sound quality is better, the cover art is bigger and you have more to hold in your hand.
Personally, I love the concept of iPods, etc. This way we produce less waste (Those booklets, cover-art, media come from somewhere you know), and the convenience is great. If you prefer CD's,...well, you're like the guy in 1992 who was still talking about how great the tape was:P
For the record, CD's are lossy in fact. Don't be fooled. CD's are 16-bit encoded where as professional studios often have 16 bit/track and compressed into one 16-bit stream. Not to mention, many recording are done in analog as it generally gives better sound.
Graft a Marijuana plant with all types of vegtables/fruits and grow it. Take the seeds of this plant and plant them everywhere. Make sure to plant them close to large corn fields etc, so when next years crop comes up we are all getting high. This could also be an effective tool for terrorism. Simply graft something toxic with a regular plant and make sure to pollinate it everywhere so hopefully (for the terrorist) people everywhere will eat your food and die.
In Shadowbane GM events are great. It is broadcat across the server and everyone races to get there if possible. The GM's drop really good items that cannot be made or found elsewhere. As for players getting jealous...well, in Shadowbane you kill a lot so it's not a problem. Cold, cut-throat game.
Like people who go to Wal-Mart know what the internet is.

Hey Gregory W. Nemitz, I'm claiming I own it now. You owe me $20.00 and I'll beat your ass to get it!

Why not? It's all about the Benjamin's, after all. Get a hustle and stick with it.
Your idiot conspiracy theories are ridiculous and wrong. Fuck off.
Sorry.

Lets see how M$ or some other Linux enemy is in some way funding SCO here. There is something going on beyond what we see my intuition tells me.

Shit that's scary! Your knowledge of past jingles is amazing...maybe I shouldn't have skipped class today...

Yay, Apache! More proof open source software works.
'Nuff said.
I still can't believe the Packers lost to the Cards. Gonna be a long season.

Steve Jobs could shit in his hand and sell it as the iShit for $999 and Mac fanatics would be lining up around the block to buy it.
That's a good one, heh. Where can I put in a pre-order? Do I have to pay for the food also?
You can get software that will record ay sound sent into your soundcard. This way you get your music and they are none the wiser. :)
It appears someone else is selling gift certificates as well as music in general for people that cannot access the store. The auction is here
Good luck I guess.
