I moved to London recently, but no one has been able to answer my question about Guy Fawkes with certainty: Are Londoner's celebrating because Fawkes tried to blow up parliament, or because he was caught before he could?
For as long as you shell out the fee, you can download tracks and listen to them either online or offline. Stop paying the fee, and you don't get to keep the downloads.
Right there is why I don't think it will catch on. People don't like the idea of paying until the end of time for something they have bought. Also, what happens when Napster 2.0 goes out of business, do your downloaded songs dissapear as well?
I haven't tried it yet - still using the iTunes store.
No kidding. iTunes is great, but I don't use it for music - I use it for the audiobooks. These are not available by *ahem* cheaper means, so I love having iTunes for them.
Worries about grey-goo scenarios and DNA plagues shouldn't stop us from researching nanotech
I agree, but I am still worried that the failure rate of a nanobot has to be nonzero, now no matter how small it may be, in order for nanotech to work, billions upon billions upon billions of nanobots are needed. I see probability 1 of failure.
It has become common in the USA to believe that a completely free market always comes up with the most efficient solution, and that which is best for the people. Perhaps this just isn't true in these situations.
No kidding. There isn't going to be a wifi network that spans the country because of a single company. You really just need the government for large-scale, for-the-public-good type of projects. Corps don't care about the public good, just the short term buck, so they lack a certain grandness of scale.
Yes, but how bendable is it? If it's the size of a credit card, I want to be able to put it in my wallet and sit on it without it cracking. Otherwise, what's the point of having it that size?
Ever try to get a library card there? Well, you can't. Not without a letter from your university saying there is no place else in the world you can find the material. I would kill for one big, central, public library in London like the New York Public library. But no, there are 10,000 crappy, little one all over the place.
The problem with secret trials and no legal council are the false positives. Sure, I would support the PATRIOT act if you could guarantee me only 100% terrorists would be captured, but you can't.
Take me for example, I did the odd combination of physics and sociology in college. If the government peeks at my reading material, they are going to see some frightening stuff - books that could be used to make all sorts of weapons (the science books) and books by people like Marx and Hitler (the sociology books). So now, on paper, it seems like I have the ability, and desire to do some bad things.
I don't want to spend two weeks (if I'm lucky) in a secret jail because some dumb jock working for the FBI put me on a list because he's scared of books. This isn't the only reason, but it sure was part of the reason I moved to London.
any changes made to a 3D17 document must go-through a moderation-like voting process to see which should be applied to the document. Possible applications include allowing a large community to draft letters, emails, and faxes in a way that everyone can contribute.
Yeah, but those documents will be so boring to read that the letter from any 'large community' will have no effect on the recipient.

Wow. What a beautiful mood-setting trailer. But then, at the end, some guys says INNOCENCE! In the most jarring way possible.
Anyone know the name of the song used?
Finally a service I can use from the spammers. At least this way I'd know the girl was real and what she looked like ;)
I'm going to guess my RedHat stock is in freefall right now : (
I'm waiting for a robot I can fight martial arts with. Any chance of us getting one of those?
Here you go.

Only if they have a dodgey heart :)
If you use Symantec's product, it's only a 500 comment anti-gun rant. :)
The NRA says guns don't kill people, people do. But I think the gun helps.
Read on for more.
Not much more.

Lemmings jump because of Disney
I guess I was just dissapointed that there is no huge library in London that I can spend the day in beeing a huge nerd. The closest thing is Borders :/

One for each of the five richest kings in Europe.

(insert end-of-the-world statement here)
No thank you.

So we create a lethal virus so we can develop cures for it. What, do you think we can develop and cure everything?
:/
No, they are just bored because we have already cured everything
So are we standing outside the universe to hear this sound, or are we in the vacuum of space?
Right.
