I haven't replied to a Slashdot article in years but I had to reply to this one.
On the wall of my den is a cover of the July 1985 Scientific American because in
it is a piece of code I wrote that graphically demonstrated how bad the MS random
number generator was then. It was a big moment for me:-)
10 SCREEN 2 20 X = RND * 640 30 Y = RND * 200 40 PSET (X,Y) 50 GO TO 20
The results were unbelievable. What was even harder to believe was we couldn't get MS to do a thing about it then.
It's nice to know some things never change.
I'd never heard of Firefly until Serenity came out and I didn't get to see Serenity in the theaters. Since then I've rented the DVD, bought the DVD, bought the series DVDs, bought the comic book, and gotten my daugter and 6 coworkers enthralled by the series. 3 of those coworkers have spread the news further abroad. If Serenity 2 comes out I can promise Universal at the very least 20 ticket sales that weren't there for Serenity 1.
That's the power of geometric progression.
In 1985 Perkin-Elmer spun off thier computer division and renamed it to Concurrent Computer Corporation.
According to Wikipedia:
The commission blamed the failings primarily on Perkin-Elmer. Relations between NASA and the optics company had been severely strained during the telescope construction due to frequent schedule slippage and cost overruns. NASA found that Perkin-Elmer had not regarded the telescope mirror as a crucial part of their business and were also secure in the knowledge that NASA could not take its business elsewhere once the polishing had begun. While the commission heavily criticised Perkin-Elmer for these managerial failings, NASA was also criticised for not picking up on the quality control shortcomings such as relying totally on test results from a single instrument.
I would pay for old Playhouse 90, Hallmark Theater, and American Playhouse specials. Those were often wonderful experiences that have been lost to the monopolization of our media industry.
The ipod is sexy because it's always improving. When the pda was constantly improving it was an object of desire. My first 3 pdas were bought within three years of each other and each was an order of magnitude improvement over it's predecessor. But that was back in the 90's.
Maybe that's why my wife no longer finds me irresistable?
I've never been a follower and today is not the day I intend to start.
That's where I quit reading. Too bad, too, as I was looking forward to reading the review. I've downloaded and installed Ubuntu, liked it, but also couldn't find a compelling reason to switch from my distro (gentoo). Not that there aren't many reasons to like Ubuntu, I am sure.
But I'm a follower. I like to sit safe in the herd (hurd?). I can't think for myself. So obviously my poor wits aren't ready for so heady of a review.
FWIW, I think it's unfair to troll KtHM's reply. This is at the heart of this article: Why people don't stick with Linux? If there's a missing killer-app, or the interfaces suck then you don't stick.
KtHM: After using Photoshop, the Gimp is a nightmare. Who designed the interface? *cringe*
I'm not certain it is off topic, but if it is I wish someone would ask it as a slashdot question. I'm beginning to get spooked about using Google myself. Too much power in one hands.... I think the masters at Google have much more potential for being the borg than Bill Gates has. Yahoo works for me for web searches, maybe not as well but as a viable alternative. What I really would like to come up with is an alternative to groups.google.com.
I don't remember allmusic.com. I'll wayback it to see what I missed.
My original point was that there was a lot of content on mp3.com that I thought was going to be available perpetuity only to have it gobbled up and destroyed (if memory serves) by the music industry. I.E. Get em while you can, boys, because the man's plan is to end the bread and circuses.
Anybody notice the 2001 date on the webpage? Is that an error at Harvard or is this a really old article?
According to the site units seized are: 32,859 / $23,668,747.
Those are $720 units! At those prices no wonder there's so much thievery.
Who sez, bro? American ain't no legislatived lingo, ya knows? Irregardless of whats you'se ole biddys thank.
Gots ta go!
Sorry....wrong topic!
Look at the bottom of the slide. The typo isn't with the capital 'M' but with the missing 'A'

Will somebody please print this friggin page and send it to Sony?
According to Wikipedia:
I love to hear good news concerning linux but...
Concurrent is not a star I would want to hitch my wagon to.
Remember they are the wonderful company that screwed up Hubble.
132 people voted?!?! And that's supposed to be indicitive of exactly what?
Now if it was a slashdot poll that sample space would carry some statistacal validity.

Plus, I don't deal with DRM, Ad-Aware, Zotob....
True. But on Linux I can run Gimp, send money to goodly causes, and have enough left over to upgrade my graphics card
No. I didn't read the article, but, from the teaser is it correct to paraphrase her argument as, "If you're stupid, stick with Microsoft."?
My media PC has been stone silent ever since I switched from oss to alsa.

How many people watch movies on their PC?
That's the whole point of the product offering!
I wish I had mod points :-)

I wish't I'd hoarded the content from mp3.com from 5 years ago.
