    That is only true since OS X 10.6. Prior upgrades: OSX 10.4 was $130 as was 10.5. And your point about iteration is not quite true either. Windows just put out 8.1 (for free). IIRC both XP and 7 got enhancements at the time official service packs were released.

    So this works out to a whopping... 113 dpi. I have been using two 20" 16x12 (ie, 100dpi) monitors for eons now and continue to look for a single screen upgrade on the order of 150dpi (or higher). There are none, though not suprising as 2.666 would be oddly sized.

    However, I do require at least the same physical screen realestate (ie, not shorter just because the display is 16:9). It seems I need 4800x2700 w/ 36.7" diagonal. Perhaps if I wait another five years... though these guys are already 11 years old...

    So.. what about users pre 10.6? Forgotten? Microsoft still supports XP Does Apple still support OS X 10.1? They were released at the same time in 2001. I think nothing illustrates the difference between the companies than that fact. Apple obsoletes their users by force while Microsoft bends over backwards to maintain not only support but backward compatability.

    Please state the scientific accomplishments of the ISS. I get marked as troll yey it is you who offers nothing in rebuttal. Where are all the groundbreaking publications? Can you name one without a google search? Perhaps because there have not been any.

    As to science funding in general again it is you who is the ignorant troll. Govt funding is at record highs. If anything has "destroyed" science is that it is now completely dependent on govt largess. In effect scientists are nth more than civil servants.

    I only wear my face mask when the base temp drops to 0 or I plan on robbing a convenience store. And I have boarded quite a few times with -20F (temp, not windchill) at the summit. That I ride about 45-50mph does add a bit of potential windchill hence the need for the mask. I've also learned to be far more careful with anything plastic as things start to easily shatter or shear at that temp.

    down the tubes.. or into the vacuum as the case may be. The ISS has no major accomplishments other than being a gravy train for aerospace contractors. Is there research going on up there that provides sufficient return to justify a cost of $8.2 million per day if it were not funded through tax dollars? Now that the station is being serviced commercially it is time to pull the plug. If IBM or Intel or Merck or Pfizer or whomever want a research lab in space let them form a consortium with Boeing et al and build one that suits their needs. And if they are really in love with the existing station, sell it to them and get some tax money back.

    Not that long ago (meaning.. 5 to 10 years) it was quite common in my area of northern new england to have a week or more of -30 at night -10 day. We've all been spoiled a bit the past few years by only a handful of days like that. What is unsual about this year is that we had a few of those days in mid/late December instead of the more typical Feb.

    Also, while those -30, -40 etc numbers sound terrible, if you dress properly its not that bad and further, they usually happen betwen 4am and 7am and quickly moderate.

    Everyone should read Atlas Shrugged. Yes, it is long and probably could have done with better editing. But many people will see great insights/parallels between the story and events of the past few years. Unless, of course, if you are a progressive Dem. In that case, skip.

    The windoes world is unlike the iWorld. People are neither forced or need to upgrade every time there is a new shiny out there. Windows 8 will not have significant widespread adoption until windows 7 pc's meet their physical demise. The upgrade from XP to 7 (if hardware capable) offered some advantages but not enough that hordes flew to 7. 8 vs 7 is the same phenom - its a bit faster, has a few new tricks but all in all for the average user that only desires the "desktop" its just not on that must have list. It is not that 8 is not good but that 7 is more than good enough.

    This never happens to any of the iCult as Apple obsoletes them completely every two years. The iSteve is laughing in his grave.. "13 years of support!?! Are you fucking crazy?"

    And not for nothin I had XP until this past year and did not have one virus and did not run any active virus protection. Once or twice a year I would download one and do a full scan only to have cookies removed. I'm still amazed at how some people seem unable to keep their pc clean. Probably a good reason not to have sex with them either!

    Please get real. Linux, BSD, etc all have their roles to play but to pretend for a moment that you will make better use of your hardware is a tremendous reach. Please find me any hardware that does not have first and foremost drivers and associated software written for windows. And as to bloat.. linux + kde or gnome are easily on a par with win 8.

    A lengthy reply and typical of the string evangelicals - a cult on a par with Apple fan boys. How dare anyone suggest that 30 to 40 years of have been wasted by thousands of physicists (can only imagine the conversion to man-hours)!

    Of course, the reality is that there are many physicists who believe exactly as I do - that the "theory" will never prove anything testable, has wasted a huge amount of resources and has been closer to "welfare for physicists" than anything else. However, I will not deny that some very esoteric maths have gotten a big boost from it over the years.

    It is time to put S-Matrix theory and its successors to bed and come up with some new ideas.

    The problem is the market cannot decide - because the chances and everything is so vague and time delayed that how do you really know? It's like predicting the weather.

    Have you heard of this thing they call the internet? Or global commerce? Nothing stays undiscovered for very long and if it is a big enough deal people will hear about it and competitors take advantage.

    I"ve been using one for development testing the past three months. 9" for $150. Yes, it is last years tech but it is more than capable for general use and even light gaming. B&N did skin the interface a little bit and it should be easy for him to navigate.
