I really figured that all these dna testing outfits were either fronts for DHS or at least in cahoots. Shocking the FDA did not get the memo. Has Rudi Guilliani been on Fox yet to lament the loss of info for the DNA databse?
Let me go rah rah for you. If 23andme is so shitty at providing accurate medical information to aid the lay person in evaluating their results then the MARKET will put them out of business as consumers will a) stop using them and b) competitors who provide better service will emerge.
There is no need for government intervention here. Please go control your own person and family and leave the rest of us the fuck alone.
because many independent people can download the source and review it, many people can build binaries, etc..
Yes and I can eat ice cream every day too but then I would get fat. Just because code may be available does not mean it has been fully audited or even that the auditors fully understand not only the code but programming in language X with system calls Y to know what is a security risk. How many people working on a project even know the codebase beyond their particular chunk? How many are capable enough not to screw it up in the first place?
And I'm curious - when was the last time you built a binary only after fully reviewing the source? Do you know any of the people who have made the binaries you have installed lately? I again submit the answer for 9/10 (or more) people is NO.
It really is arrogant of FSF to imply that a user trusting one or a small group of individuals running an opensource project is somehow better off and more secure than microsoft.
Unless a user audits the code, compiles the code (with a known to be good compiler) and manages all elements of the server and routing, there is NO assurance of security or privacy. And never mind the fact that few users even compile from source anymore.
Offtopic: why am I being sent to the beta site to post comments? Very annoying as it does not remember my login credentials and noscript is reporting XSS issues.
Please do not ever, ever move into an apartment, condo, coop or hoa. You are not meant for it. I'm sure you will be the first to go ballistic that day you get a letter about some minor rule or regulation that you broke because afterall, "Courtesy is wasted on dumbfucks, as is shaming, which is why punishments and fines exist."
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, follows the rules and regs in these places 100% to the letter 100% of the time. You can be a nasty asshole or you can try to find ways to make things work 99% of the time and not get bent out of shape the 1% they do not.
You also left out "continously changing spec". Without Oracle's input, there is no way to determine how much blame each party should get. I suspect Oracle keeps quiet as it is bad business to embarass your customer.
First off - start by having a non confrontational dialog with the community as a whole. Follow that up with an open meeting with just pet owners. What are the issues? Is it only a handful of problem owners? Is there no where else to take the pet? What can be done to discourage going in one area and perhaps encourage the use of another area? How bad is the problem really? (some people are not meant to live in close quarters as they see any digressions as a personal afront akin to murder). Encourage the pet owners to "police" their own group.
I've lived in an HOA for quite a long time and have seen many boards go the confrontational route. It always fails and it ends up making people hate each other. During my own time on the board we communicated with people, treated them civily and in general, were not dicks. Shockingly, far fewer of the other residents were dicks too.
When you purchase a ticket you have entered into an agreement with them (with a lot fo fine print). The disagreement is with your asserting that flying is a priviledge.
Dude.. if the POTS infrastructure is destroyed (and/or your home) wtf do you think the cellular infrastructure in your area will look like? Do you really honestly think mobile cell sites are a viable replacement? Perhaps that works in a small low density area (rural) with good lines of sight but not in suburbia or a large metro area.
While I think we all agree that flying like many activities is something of a privilege.
Please only speak for yourself. There are many of us who do not believe flying is a "prviledge" which the government shall give out to whom they please. Flying is a contract between you and the airline, not you and the government. We would be far better off if there was no government involvement in flying at all. The airlines have a vested interest in protecting their property and their clients safety. Likewise, the airports have a vested interest in providing services to the airlines, commercial or private, passenger or freight. ATC does not need to be a government function as the major airlines can provide this as well.
Please stop viewing things which the government is regrettably involved in as providing you with a priviledge and service.
1) So you are cutting out Amazons warehouse.. not a huge savings on a per copy basis. 2) Per copy cost is? 5 cents? 3) Stores order books. Publishers may make arrangements with large dealers for big titles. Not seeing this one. 4) Per copy cost is? 1 cent? $15/hour and how many books in a box per hour? 5) The printing process is for all intents automated.
A) Just one server admin? No vacations? Do you think Amazon only has one for their kindle books? Let me add to your list B) The owner of company hosting and providing server space C) The person who takes the raw e-books and uploads them to the right location with correct branding/license if reqd.
I have a 300page book currently in print. The soft retails on amazon for $17.95 and hard $24.95. My cost to print, which includes the cost of the printer fulfilling sales to Amazon, B&N, etc is $4.72 and $9.82. Of course, a real publisher probably gets a better deal right?
So by your logic I should sell my book in an e-version for $13.23 as well that eliminates all those print and distribution charges. Somehow I really doubt that is a dollar figure that you consider to be "significantly less" than the print version.
Tesla is catching fire at a rate 3.5x that of those Ford Escapes (12/139K over 2 years vs 3/20K over 1 year). What I wonder - which car fire is more toxic/dangerous for the environment and first responders? My inclination is to say the Tesla.
You perpetuate the common myth that the cost of the printed book is what it is because of the physical media. It is not. A print on demand soft runs about $3 and a hard cover about $5-10 depending on a few options. The price you see on books is one which primarily goes to compensate authors, editors and (if not self published) the publisher. There is no inherent reason why any e-book should cost significantly less than the printed version especially when you factor in the cost of maintaining the computer systems and staff for sellers who provide online backup to the copy on your device.
No. I am under no obligation what so ever to lock or otherwise secure my property. What will you suggest next? If I leave a lighter on my porch and you steal it and torch the house down the block that I share the blame?
The simple fact remains that this movie is predicting a distant future outcome which is not certain. In effect, it is speculation and not science. Science offers tests, data and error bars which give statistical credence to a theory. And the short history of future climate modelling has had a not so good track record with basics like global temperature.
And anyone claiming that erectric cars are lower cost to maintain is either naive or a salesman. On what basis is the claim made? One or two years of availability? Show me your maintenance bills after 5, 7, 10 years of regular dailiy use. Show me the effects of location (ie, climate) on maintenance. Then we can have a legitimate discussion of upkeep and repair costs.
You do realize that ARPA was not the only nor the first network. That the current internet shares it as a foundation does not mean that were there no ARPA net that there would be no broadband, long haul, public communications network. Try again.
If you have solar panels and don't want to sell your excess back to the utility then don't . But don't try to pretend that you don't make use of the grid when you do. The public utility has been forced to buy your excess energy at above market rates thus pushing up costs to everyone. Stop crying about being treated like a wholesale power supplier.
It is for non-violent drug offenders. And a whole slew of other generally victimless crimes. Otherwise who would support the prison/industrial complex?
Likewise.. and it illustrates just how bloated "modern" OS have become. Then again, the generally accepted definition of "OS" seems to have changed to include things such as desktop and window managers.
The best it can tell you is the relative work abilities of one small group and really tells you nothing at all abou the qualities of each member. This method would have fired Pauli and Born because they ranked 'ranked' below Einstein, Heisenber, Shroedinger and Bohr.

There are normal and civil ways to handle these kind of problems and certainly ways to do so with out resorting to such lengths.
