and simply another political stunt by the Nobel committee. Higgs did not want the award. There were at least five researchers all with equally significant contributions to the eventual theory. Yet because the award can only go to at most three, they decided to drop the other three researchers (two alive). Some even claim the total should be six. One wonders if they had called the presumed particle "dog" whether Higgs would have been awarded the prize.
This is most definitely a case where giving no prize was more appropriate. They could even recognize the significance of the research by public statement and lament that it would be unfair to try to separate this group into winners and losers. But the committee better figure something out because this kind of problem is going to be the norm, not the exception. The age of one or two scientists making such an outsized contribution to standout from the rest of their (or other) research groups is over.
None of your examples are using 8GB at one time. Are you really processing a single 8GB photo? Highly doubtful. Do you have 500 16MB photos? Possible. Once you start batch processing the drive logic is going to be precaching the next likely hits whether its an SSD or HDD. And if game performance was going to be affected by disk drive speed in the way you imply its a first for me - I've yet to see one spec out with "SSD required".
As to cost - no, you are paying $180 more than I am to get a bigger buffer - while I get a 2TB drive for $140. You still have to pony up for a regular drive. You also have a more cumbersome solution - I do not have to move stuff on or off the "fast" drive
I stand by my statement that yes, you can spend a lot more money to get a faster storage subsystem but for the vast majority of people these hybrid drives offer an excellent solution.
you aren't using 5GB at one time are you? Given the game reqs are 2 to 8GB I think not. As to multi-tasking - that is what it is good at: keeping the most frequently used files in the cache. But hey, go ahead and spend $600 and up for what can be had for $100. Or $1,200 and up if you want 2T vs oh.. $140.
one of the 2.5" drives. Benchmarks are a dubious thing - sure you can overwhelm the cache but in real world use that is not going to be an issue. Most users are doing the same thing(s) over and over and the drive optimizes to keep the necessary files in the ssd for rapid access. Likewise, modern drives, even the 5400 variants, are fast enough to keep up with video recording. So this really boils down to - are you willing to take a performance hit on the odd times you actually read or write a gigantic file in exchange for near equal everyday performance and a huge capacity at a very cheap price.
Java . -> unable to handle the load, at least in my state. And not only was it not able to handle the load, it would not die gracefully, instead putting out messages to the end user useful at best only to a programmer. Why did they not use COBOL? I guess time tested and 'just works' means nothing anymore. Yes, java is the first thing I think of when it comes to high volume transaction processing. These sites are nothing more than airline reservation systems under a different name.
And no, I'm only half joking.
an example error:
Error 500: org.springframework.core.task.TaskRejectedException: Executor [java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor@aee9ec22] did not accept task: org.springframework.context.event.SimpleApplicationEventMulticaster$1@6ae3d673
I've already received multiple java related errors today on my state's obamacare portal, this being the most recent.

If they had used COBOL things would have 'just worked'
I read a PhD dissertation and was instructed by a professor working on the idea of using chanelling in crystal material to accelerate particles. What was not included then was the addition of lasers. That was the mid 1980s.
Are very much needed to overcome SCOTUS rulings which appear to allow the collection of phone meta data. While it would be nice to see a liberal/progressive critter step up, they seem unlikely to grow a pair. That puts it on the likes of Lee, Paul or Amash.
I would start with a very simple bill. "Phone call records are private information to be shared only with customer and company except by explicit search warrant with probably cause shown." That would get the rest of the fuckwads on record once and for all. Pelosi? Boxer? Lowey? Sanders? No where to hide.
Put the conspiracy theories away. This is simply a problem with server time syncronization. Everyone sees the word 'atomic clock' and assumes perfection. Precise time sync is a non-trivial problem made more difficult by cheap servers which drift. It would not be surprising at all that one (or more) of the news room servers was out of synch.
Further - why is everyone assuming that Chicago has the correct absolute time stamps on these trades? Again, time sync on multiple servers. Does anyone even have the error bars we are working with? Didn't think so.
Any Iranian national who leaves the country to do anything in the west (US in particular) should expect to at the least be interrogated and at the worst, jailed. That this guy was getting an advanced science/engineering degree makes him all the more valuable to the state. I realize his "family" still was in Iran, but to think for a moment he was not going to have serious problems at some point while visiting was the height of stupidity. When he made the decision to study in the US he effectively made the decision to leave Iran for good.
That I am not a communist like you is quite apparent. Did you notice how well the CommBloc did from 1945-1989? Just a real hotbed of innovation, right? Without them the world would be a completely backward place.
The fact that you try to argue that government is able to do anything cheaper shows your naivety. I'm sending you to see Putin for re-education.
and the US and others should stop wasting more on it. There have been no research results which I am aware of (and I have looked) which come anywhere near justifying the giganormous cost of the ISS.
Those who wish NASA would do more probes or have more money for telescopes should all be in favor of the earliest termination of ISS.
Those who insist on seeing "man in space" (whether needed or not) should pin their hopes on commercial enterprise and not a government agency.
Teachers are paid for primarily out of local school/property taxes and not only do salaries vary, so to do benefits (pensions, health care, etc). These taxes are paid by everyone, not just those with children in the system. That means granny has been paying school taxes for 50 years after her kids got out of school. These taxes are often larger than the combined town, county and state taxes on a home owner. And like all government workers, underfunded pension plans are a norm and a looming financial dagger. You seem to think that state money and federal money which supplements local school budgets come from the fairy god mother.
What remains unsaid is you offer no evidence that class size matters. As an example, the school I graduate from now has a class size in the mid teens. When I was a student, our typical class size was near 30. Yet test scores, graduation rates and college acceptance are not changed. The best that research on the topic can say is that it may have a benefit for K through 3. I don't think it takes a genius to figure out this is likely a result of the teacher being better able to maintain discipline over children who generally lack any at that age.
I wonder how many students can tell you anything about European history? US history? Ancient Greece? And where are you getting this 'rote memorization' from? Given that math problems had to be solved by hand, data collected and recorded by hand students of that era had to do more than just memorize the multiplication table (and is there something inherently wrong with doing this?) What about literature and writing? Are you seriously going to compare what passes for composition today to those earlier generations?
What you cite is purely a function of enrollment rate and not the actual process of educating the students (and in particular enrollment of minorities).
Lets be honest about class size and teachers. Why is it good for teachers? Easier to control the class. Fewer exams and homework to grade. More teachers required means those already in place are more senior and less likely to be fired should there ever be cuts (gasp!)

I'm still paying $3.99/gallon for regular.

Clearly nobody needs that government sub-agency. Not one complaint in months? Not one employee (let alone tech admin) noticed?

In my caae, the answer is a firm yes.
SKY, etc, etc. How is this news for nerds? Was the car remotely piloted? Did it have lasers mounted on the hood? Microwaves?

Are you saying that OpenGL and DirectX are the fastest? Because Fortran code sure is.
Do you think the board of JPM does not hold Dimon responsible for the Whale trade in London?

please go back to your java and c++ world and leave Fortran alone - you don't know the first thing about Fortran or Fortran compilers.
