Have you considered that TV news (ota and cable) provide weather information "free" to their viewers in exchange for (hopefully) watching commercials? That the same appear in newspapers?
I'll just repy to a few points. What is to say that DOE (aka the US govt) can't lease the light sources to a private corporation to run for profit? The corporation as I mentioned in my original post could be a joint venture between many corporations, essentially selling back research time in proportion to funds paid into the project. Any extra time would be sold at 'market' rates to non-members.
One reason why people think that industry/philanthropy can't possibly work is because they compare it to a situation where there was little to be gained by just such a setup - why do that when government is doing it for you?
Where did RP say he was cutting the weapons program? Or border patrol? Quotes please. Show me what these 'specialized regulatory and enforcement agengies' have done? SEC? FCC? FDA? They are nothing more than home away from home of corporate lobbyists. Yeah SEC prevented the financial tardation! TSA is sure to prevent anyone getting on a plane with something bad [how many newspapers have run stuff past the TSA successfully?]
It is actually you who is shamelessly pandering to the status quo and fear mongering.
Maybe you should go read the plan? He cuts the most (in dollar terms) from defense and is advocating closing the majority for our foreign bases (ie, Japan, Korea).
The NNSA has responsibility for servicing the nukes and that would be transfered to DoD where it belongs. I would expect any functions in the former weapons labs still related to stockpile management would be also.
Who do you think pays for NOAA now? The fairy God mother? The horror to think that your local tv station or newspaper will have to pay a private company for that service now.
Are you saying that a corporation(s) could not provide the same service as NOAA? That corporations are not capable of launching a weather sat (or buying NOAA's) and providing the service for a fee? The misperception is that your weather info is now free - it is not as taxes and debt pay for NOAA.
NIST will likely survive as some of its functions are in fact enumerated in the Constitution. LIkewise, parts of DOE would end up in DOD or elsewhere.
As to "science" and "research" - maybe it is time for a return to the days of philanthropy and corporate sponsorship? Bell labs was a premier research institution so yes, it can be done. Grants to researchers at universities likewise can come from private donors - individuals such as Gates or Buffet (who never really puts his wallet where his mouth is) - or corporations or industry groups.
You are the tard actually. The "rich" would still be rich regardless of bailouts approved by the congress critters or not. Think deep. Why did the congress critters do this? Because to allow the large banks, etc to fail would do serious damage to whom? The f*ing unions that is who. Where do you think all that pension money is invested? In a mattress? Like it or not all those "99%"ers who pay jack in income taxes have their retirements (pensions or 401k) invested up the ying-yang in stocks and bonds of corporate Amerika with a heavy % in financials (banks, brokers, insurance, etc) And as to the dead beats protesting - get a job and stop saying there are none. There are plenty of jobs available, just not what you want to do. The days of Americans being paid a large multiple of workers in other countries is over. And as has been shown repeatedly in this downturn, when offered jobs which involve..gasp.. manual labor the soft Americans quit the same week if not the same day.
If you have no doubt that your skills are worth the extra money and that 'big' company is unlikely to be in difficult financial straights the next few years, make the move. Try your best not to burn bridges and you are probably best off speaking about the quality of life issues rather than the money if pressed by your current employer who may well match or do some other nice thing for you. But this sounds like it is as much about money as it is location, and money will not offset 1.5 to 2 hours a day commuting. Loyalty is a very nebulous thing now a days.
While I regularly buy electronic odds and ends from oldegg - flash memory, mice, blu-ray, etc, I tend not to build pc's often at all. I have two locations - in one I built a (then) top shelf dual monitor system in late 2002. I'm writing this on that now. I had to replace the video card once (it died) and I've moved on from hardware raid. Clearly I no longer game on it but I honestly don't have the free time to do much of that anymore so thats not an issue. For everything else (including a lot of photo editing and some NLE) its still does the job fine. My music library is ripped in full so its not a big deal if a new cd takes 3 mins or 2 mins or 30 secs to extract. My other system was built as just above low end 5 years ago and that too is perfectly fine for basic productivity and "work".
So I have a long history with oldegg regardless of how often I build a pc and I suspect they have a lot of other clients who have similar purchasing habits. They don't just cater to the 'must have latest greatest' crowd.
All very good points. I would add again the personal interaction with the lecture or recitation as well as the ability to ask your professor questions - either during the class or during office hours. And meeting with your fellow classmates to work on a project or other assignments is not going to be the same as doing it in person. Are you going to be able to walk down the hall of your dorm or fraternity and ask the smart kid or upper classman for help? Sure you can post a question on a forum but how long will it take to get the answer? Will you understand it? What about follow up?
I think the appropriate role of 'online' studies is to augment the existing classroom. That may be as little as access to hw, notes, etc or include a rebroadcast of a lecture or guest speaker. Or maybe more depending on the subject being taught. But it is not a replacement for the classroom or the college environment.
Jeeez.. you guys make this seem soooooo difficult. Put the freakin key on a sticker on the chip or motherboard. How hard is that? If you are putting another OS on your machine I think you are probably capable of taking the lid off your pc to find the code and write it down. As to security of this method - if you need to worry about people opening up your pc to get this code so they can install a modified OS (to spy on you), I'd say you have far bigger security problems.
You are joking right? $3T in proposed "deficit reduction" of which $1.5 comes from increased taxes. The other $1.5T comes not from cuts but from reductions in an increasing baseline budget. Of the $1.5T, $1T is said to come from 'winding down Afghanistan and Iraq' but of course ignores the enormous future costs of verterans care, repair/replacement/restocking of military equipment. Leaving $500B for reductions in entitlement outlays over 10 years - $50B a year, if it is indeed all from entitlements. So please, get your facts in line. There is not a single cut to anything in this proposal. Spending will be higher each and every year going forward. And none of this is binding on anyone in the future.
As to the tax aspect. Brilliant idea to raise the capital gains rate on those with the most capital to invest. Do you think they will keep that money here? Or will they invest abroad where it will, net of taxes, have a higher return?
Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people's money. It's quite a characteristic of them. They then start to nationalise everything, and people just do not like more and more nationalisation, and they're now trying to control everything by other means. They're progressively reducing the choice available to ordinary people. M. Thatcher
My lack of knowledge that.. private industry is doing this? Can do it far cheaper? Is doing it faster? With new methods and not beholden to a government bureaucracy? Or my lack of knowledge that there is no need for a continued manned presence in space funded by the government?
This is a prime example of why NASA should be terminated. Spin off the space science/weather programs and kill the rest. $30B to re-use existing technology to get something in space 6 years from now? Are they that fucking hopeless?
You don't need an official minor or second on Comp. Sci. You just need to be able to code well and you can learn that in your mandatory computer classes and perhaps one elective. Anything more, learn hands on or in your spare time. What would be valuable to you is a second in either Finance or Accounting, depending upon the quality of the program(s) at the school you attend. Accounting isn't just about CPA's and debit credits - there is cost accounting and managerial accounting. Finance isn't just about buying stocks and bonds, its about how to fund a business or project. Both of those will serve you well down the road and will enable you to interface well with the other areas of your company who are concerned with the dollar and cents aspect of the business.
The EU should no more pass judgement over the merger of US corporations than the US should over merger of EU corporations. The only time they should both be involved is if there is a cross border merger, period.
How about we get rid of all the linkages to crap sites like facebook, digg, mysapce, etc. These are the links that are almost always responsible for slow page loads for me. I rarely have any issue at all with downloads or videos, local or international. Interesting too when using noscript and some webpages literally twitch when something like facebook is blocked as they try over and over to reload and reconnect. And as others have said, these local caches are just another security risk waiting to be exploited.
Here is the link to ORIN7 which shows winds hitting 70 knots and a central pressure of 28.50. Granted, the sustained winds show slightly below cat 1 at the surface, the winds were reported at 20 to 30% stronger at 1000 feet. And windspeed is not the only measure - central pressure is used too. 28.50 is on the border between cat 2 and 3. This storm was somewhat stillborn when it came to the winds.
Sure, I'm going to easily remember that lunch time here is 4pm and somewhere else it is at 6am. Get a grip. At least I can guess at the right time zones to convert here to there.
Most bars try to have on multiple games and to duplicate left/right front/back so that people on both sides of the table can watch the same game. So yeah maybe on a night when nothing else is going on you get the back room or similar if there is one.

and POWER7 does seem to kick ass too, no?

SNOBOL4 .. I barely knew ya 30 years ago.. man don't date yourself like that!

You should get some perspective. That money is wasted elsewhere does not justify wasting it somewhere else irregardless of the amounts involved.
