why is this marked flamebait? i hope its not because he used 'japs' in the title. This is no more offensive than people in the US being called Yanks. Get over it
please site *any* study or reference to support this claim other than your own or other anectdotal 'evidence'. Or are you just the owner of the electric monopoly?
Peter Grace was a ogre. Did you know he packed a gun? This was in the early 80s. As a CEO you would really have to do some bad things to be that concerned for your well being to carry your own gun and body guards.
In that case wouldn't it then be better to refer to it as "the new User Interface Longhorn" than the new OS Longhorn?
If the core which actuallly gets things done is now "done" as you put it, then we really are just talking about what color the car should be and do you want leather or fabric seats. I'm not begrudging anybody the use of eye candy or other alternative ways of presenting search results, nor am I saying that making computer use more intutitve is not important. It just seems the term OS is being hijacked.
when an OS meant more than 'ooh what nice eye candy'. Sadly that seems to be all anybody cares about any more. Or have we reached the point where there is no innovation except (debatedly) in how the UI is presented?

As a part time resident of VT the past 5 years (the majority of the fall/winter), I can't say this surprises me. Norwich is about 10 miles away and is a military oriented university. I wonder what titles he was pulling out? Anyways, this is just another creative theft of product/services. Contrary to many popular beliefs, Vermont is not the idllyic paradise many would have you believe. High welfare rates, little job growth, few police and much unreported crime. I'll give that this guy was more creative than most, but he is still the typical dirtbag.
Please let Star Trek die. Its time. There will still be books with the occaisional interesting and original idea. As someone who grew up with TOS and has seen much of the subsequent incarnations I just feel it is well past time to move on. Enjoy the reruns and DVDs and give your support to new and different science fiction on TV.
This same Morgan Stanley report has been out for quite a while now, generally pulled out of the drawer when needed to get a new pop in the stock price.
A little research will show that Apples worldwide share grew 0.42% y/y which based on an estimated market of 185M is an increase of under 800K. They have sold 10M Ipods so far of which at least 7M came in 2004. If 20% were switching the sales increase should be order 1.5M, nearly twice what has been reported.
The electronic sig devices are next to useless as they are near impossible to use. Always at the wrong angle, wobbly and pen on touch screen just doesnt have the same tactile feel. I'm not saying my paper sig is a lot better, but the screen sig is near unreadable.
perhaps what I don't understand is why any ISP would do this if they can't guarantee they have end to end routing? What happens to Verizon's VOIP packets when they hit another backbone?
argh...is this just trying to feed the whole hysteria over RHIC we saw a few years back when people were trying to shut it down for fear of generating blackholes that would swallow Upton?
Ok, would you prefer the more politically correcct "more"? Sony sales in 04 were 20% more in the US than Europe. Right out of their annual report, ok?
As for trends, its a personal observation about the life cycle of most 'must have' items here in the states.
As for price compared to iPod mini, why aren't you then asking about Apple's pricing of the Shuffle? And it seems fairly clear Sony is marketing this to compete with the Shuffle, not the mini. Likewise you fail to address the fact that Apple items are only sold (new) at list price whereas most other products are available at discounted prices.
Please remember that most of these will be sold in the US
and not in Euroland. From the *US* press release:
A 512-megabyte model costs $130 and a 1-gigabyte model costs $180. Models with an FM tuner each cost $20 more. By comparison, Apple's shuffle is priced at $99 for 512 MB and $149 for 1 GB. The models will be available in May.
Consider further that unlike Apple products, there is
discounting of Sony products. With increased battery life
and some display it will definitely lure the average Joe.
Not to mention the iPod as a trendy item is about over.
Going back to the NY definition somebody cited, it seems that you need to be either employed by a firm who publishes on a regular basis, or if you are the owner of the publication, then it must be regular and substantial portion of your employment. So if you work a 9-5 job and then spend an hour at home blogging, this judge is saying you don't qualify as a journalist. At least thats my take on it.
these are all good ideas, though you still would want a relatively alert person releasing the story. It just seems to me the 'editors' at/. just dont give a rats any more, and probably have not for some time now. Saying and doing are clearly different.
For guys that have built this codebase called/. you would think they could have added an editors module that scans keywords in a submission against older stories. This could help catch things that were posted months ago. But honestly there is no excuse for missing something posted 72 hours ago, let alone 6.
Of/. that is. I mean really.. the past couple of weeks have been piss poor in regards subject and dupes. Then again, I guess if you have to worry when the company is gonna go bellyup you won't be very motivated. Ouch LNUX.
you will see that they all (mostly) move in the same direction at the same time. Welcome to the notion of mutual funds.
Actually, its called Beta and is used to measure risk. A beta of 1.0 would mean a stock is just as volatile as the S&P 500, though you could chose any other index as a base if you wanted to and recompute beta against that.
As for the original parent, the post was clearly a troll aimed at private social security accounts.
The reason laser light is coherent is because it travels an enormous distance before being emitted. This gives the individuals waves time to become coherent.
The laser is coherent because the emitted photons are in phase.
Well.. I could be wrong on this but.. I think the service he mentions uses Intelsat which are in geosynchonous orbits that put them about 35,800 Km away. Up and back puts it at 71,600 Km, or about 0.238s or 238ms at light speed. As already mentioned there is additional lag for the entire system, hardware <-> satellite.
This was a very recent ruling in regards to the placement of a tracking device on a suspects car rather than following him around the old fashioned way. It was not by the SCOTUS, but by a Federal judge in NY. However, a similar incident was tossed by Washington State. Odds are a case will go to SCOTUS, probably the NY one.
There are really two issues with the 'lost' sale. There is the 'lost' sale that is simply the theft of the item. Then there is the 'lost' sale as reported as slippage on a corporate financial statement. I agree with the first, but disagree with the latter for the reasons mentioned earlier - the vast majority of these downloads would never have been purchased, and there is no physical item which has gone missing - in a sense they are 'virtual' sales.
I also think the shoplifter and downloader should be treated identically until it can be shown that the downloader in fact redistibuted the item. And proof, not heresay. Using P2P software to download does not guaranty that you also shared, there are afterall many freeloaders.
What I do not know is how the legal system treats the case of a shoplifter who steals an item and then duplicates said item and redistributes those identical copies for free.
The p2p filesharer should be dealt with in the same manner as the legal system would treat the above.
Right Ok. And Clinton kissing PRNK ass in 1994 did a lot of good too, right? Great leader claiming nukes didn't just happen today, it happened not long after Bush got in. Clearly the cheating that took place under 'better' relations under Clinton had no effect.
The real threat to the US is not directly from them but if/when they sell the technology or a completed weapon. I wonder if the Chinese regret now their intervention in the Korean war. Afterall, there are Islamist seperatists in western China that would love nothing more than to teach Bejing a good lesson.
And which incarnation of Longhorn will this be? I read last year they plan on two versions. Considering people have
been waiting on XP 64bit for the Opteron for over two years
how can anybody take anything Sloth says seriously?
Cnet claims now that they will be releasing a 'near final'
RC 2 of XP 64Pro at the end of June. Hmmm.. timing a
coincidence?
