Except that Apple's market share is more like 3-5% and what percentage of that share requires hebrew support? I'm guessing its one very small number.

I use the same setup but with XP instead of W2k. Instead of a KVM Use OS X RDP client and use it to remote control the Shuttle. Native performance on the pc side, and you're not sucking all your Apple resources with VPC. Granted its not as cheap as VPC, but it works much better for most situations.

  5. More Work for the Admins... on Microsoft Prepares Office Lock-in · · Score: 1

I could see some good uses for this feature, but its sounds like an administrators nightmare. Not only do they have to manage the permissions they set on the file system, but now they have to deal with some jack*ss in marketing setting their own permissions on their word docs. Who is going to get called when one of these drones screws up his permissions, or quits? I'm sure MS, in their infinite wisdom, :) provides tools for dealing with situations like this, but it still adds work for the IT department. For internal documents, what is wrong with sticking with a soundly designed file system permission set?

Not to come off like a MS apologist, but do people here honestly think Linux is the magic bullet to rid the world of worm's like this?

Think about it. If an incompetent admin isn't wise enough to keep up to date with MS patches, do you think he'll be able to properly administer and secure a Linux box? How hard is it for these guys to either get a decent firewall, or click start>windows update?

You can't really blame MS for this one, they had the patch out a while ago. The problem rest solely witth lazy and/or imcompetent admins.

As far as home users go, if they can't figure out Windows, why would they bother with linux?

Thats assuming you do the math correctly. Don't forget that not only do you have the instructors time, lab costs, materials etc, but since this is a work related training, you've got to pay the people to attend the training, including overtime, as well as related payroll taxes. Mind you these are government workers, so the pay rate is probably pretty good.

Then you've got to consider that these workers are usually not of the technical caliber associated with /. readers, so trainng, even for something simple like openoffice is at least 3 days. Then add on the make up classes for those who couldn't make the first one, the remedial training for those who didn't get it the first time, and the added support calls for people who forgot what they learned in training.

What you end up with is a figure alot higher then $300 dollars.

Add that to the already more expensive linux solution and what you have is a solution that stinks more of politics then sound techology management. Even the city council's outside analysts admitted that the Windows solution was more technologically advanced.

I believe there term for the linux solution was "strategic." Me thinks their strategy was to give the contract to the home team based on the advice of zealots in the community.
