You're joking right? No wonder you posted as AC.

I'll give you that it cost more upfront (the initial $$$ for the box), although you can still buy Series 2 Tivo; and those are really cheap these days.

But as for the "cable companies DVR works better than Tivo"? That is laughable. Yes I do have a Tivo, but a simple search through any A/V forum and you will find pretty much nothing but praise for how well Tivo works. As well as comments from users who previously had CC DVRs and now have Tivo....usually goes soemthing like this: "OMG, I can't believe how much better Tivo is than my old CC DVR."

As for the pre-empted show...that's one of the huge features Tivo is known for handling so well. I only wish my HD DVR downstairs worked as well as my Tivo S2 that I have in the bedroom. Anytime a show switches day/time, Tivo picks it up beautifully. The HD DVR downstairs doesn't have a clue.

I know this because I have an LG LCD TV with a DVR built in downstairs which has the TV Guide as well as a Tivo in the bedroom upstairs.

Mod parent up! The wifey and I were waiting on the iPhone to come out. Then we realized that for half the price we could get something that works "good enough" for us (i.e. plays movies, music, surfs the net and makes calls). So the wifey got a BB Pearl and I got a Dash (HTC Excalibur). I'd love to have an iPhone because it does look wicked cool, but we couldn't justify the price.

I also have a PSP. I love it. However, I'm finding that I use it more for the WiFi, Music and Video as well. I've got 10-12 games but I never really play them (and they do look beautiful and are fun) but I'm just more into my XBox 360 right now. Having said that, I may actually sell mine when the iPhone comes out (i.e. I need a new cell anyway, and it will take care of my WiFi, Music and Video needs too).

And I'm not talking just some hacker, he actually knows a crap load about comp sci (theory and all). He's the type of guy (this actually happened) that re-wrote one of our display drivers over a weekend because the third party one had bugs.

Meanwhile, he is the nicest, most humble guy I've ever worked with. And I don't know a single person at work that doesn't get along with him.

I would like to point out that there is also another group of Linux users, not sure what you call them because they are not newbies but they also haven't used Linux in several years. Most of the guys I work with fall into this category, they have used Linux in the past (as in Red Hat 6 and 7) and have been out of the Linux loop for years.

Why is this interesting? Well because when they come to me (resident Linux user) because they "want to get back into Linux" they immediately ask/talk about Red Hat. I have to explain the whole "Fedora" thing to them and if I mention Ubuntu, they always say "Ubu-what?"

So Ubuntu may be uber popular with newbies just starting out, but my experience is for those out of the game and just coming back they just want to start with something they were familiar with "back in the day" which almost always is Red Hat.

  24. Re:Windows XP MCE on Interview with TiVo CEO Tom Rogers · · Score: 1

I'll add my reply to this as well. I did a lot of research when I bought my Tivo. I really wanted to make my own MythTV box, but I didn't (and still don't) have a spare box lying around. That's the key. *IF* you have a spare box around then it's cheaper to build a MythTV box (assuming you have the know how and patience).

A Tivo @ $50 (which is what mine cost) + $12/month for three years comes out to the same price as building my own (again because I'd have to buy all new hardware).

So now that price is no longer in the equation it was pretty easy for me to just get a Tivo that worked (and well) out of the box. And it does everything I'd want my MythTV box to do (including burning DVDs of shows/movies).

Three years from now when I've finally broke even with what a new box would have cost me...well by then I'll probably be making the switch to HDTV along with all new hardware anyway....then it may be a different story.
