  1. The real lesson ... on Projectionists Using Night Vision Goggles in Theaters · · Score: 1

The lesson is clear: stay out of movie theaters and you won't get arrested.

The real lesson is, 99% of Hollywood-spawned movies are sugar coated crap anyway, so save yourself 10-20 bucks and retain the 2 hours you would wish you could have back after seeing "The Alamo".

That was "literally" a great interview. I spent, "literally", 5 minutes reading it. And "literally", I spent another 1 minute determining just "literally" how many times he used the word "literally" in the interview.

    The number is, "literally", 7.

  5. Network card - Tulip on Worst Linux Annoyances? · · Score: 1

I once bought a Linksys network card that had a bright penguin sticker on the front proclaiming that it was Linux compatible. It used the Tulip driver, and came with a supposed driver on a floppy that of course didn't work. I battled with that thing for at least 40 hours, pouring over HOWTO's, web pages, re-compiling the friggin' kernel. I learned a lot, but I think the biggest lesson I learned was not to believe the "Linux Compatible" proclamations.

Good call - the Vapor Trails tour was my 3rd Rush concert and without a doubt the best. I've noticed with most of their alternating between studio and live albums, that once I hear the live version of their songs I can't listen to the studio version any more. It just sounds to clean and wimpy. My take on it is that they were shooting for that "Live" feel on Vapor Trails - and they came pretty close.

  10. Hit 'em in the pocketbook on Bruce Perens Plans On-Stage DMCA Violation · · Score: 1

I know this is not feasible, and with the relatively tiny population of Slashdot wouldn't even make a dent - but if people want the likes of the MPAA to listen, then stop buying their DVD's. If people are tired of bizarre CD encryption that disallows a person to play a CD on a computer - stop buying CD's.

Again, I know it would never work, but it's the most effective way to get corporate attention. Their sole objective is, understandibly, money. So if you take that away from them and tell 'em why - THEN maybe they'll listen. Until that happens ~ good luck BRUCE!

  19. Re:View from 30,000 feet on Professional Linux Programming · · Score: 1

Your point is well taken - I like the series too. But the strength of Beginning Linux Programming is that it doesn't try to cover the world of programming. It covers fewer topics but gives more than just a cursory glance at what xyz can do, and subsequently gives you enough to get you started and also keep you going for quite a while.

  20. Re:What no PERL ? on Professional Linux Programming · · Score: 1

The Beginning Linux Programming book has a nice section covering Perl. But as far as I can tell, the Professional book covers mostly topics that weren't covered in the Beginning book. Such as MySQL, PHP, Qt, etc.

The Beginning book has great chapters on Shell script, C, Terminals, Curses, Semaphores, Pipes, GTK, Tk, Perl, and some other goodies.

  21. View from 30,000 feet on Professional Linux Programming · · Score: 4, Insightful

I own Beginning Linux Programming 2nd ed. and think it's great for reference and instruction. I really wanted to get the Professional book. But after spending about 30 minutes at Borders looking through it, I found that it covered a lot of subjects but it didn't seem to go in any significant depth in any one of them. I think maybe the scope was a bit too big and they should have covered fewer subjects in greater detail.
