There has got to be more interesting news going on than another CueCat story. Hasn't Microsoft done something dirty and underhanded in the last week? Isn't there something...anything interesting going on in the world BESIDES CUECAT!
The article is Yak fodder. It comes across like some of the lame over-dramatized personal editorials you hear on NPR (don't get me wrong, I like NPR and a lot of the personal editorials. Just not the over-dramatized ones). If you're going to be apocalyptic, try not to sound like a 13 year old girl writing in her 'Hello Kitty' diary.
Dear Diary:
Today I met someone in the secret underground who called himself an 'historian'. I looked up historian in the dictionary and nothing was listed. He has a strange mystical aura about him and he smells like moth-balls...
The 'Associated Press', to be referred to as party 'A', is hereby challenging 'Denor', to be referred to as party 'B', with illegal usage of the term 'Associated Press' in his Slashdot editorial entitled 'In Other News'. Party 'B', at no point in time, referred to, contacted, eluded to, confabbed, or informed party 'A' as to his ephemoral intentions to illegally employ a copyrighted and trademarked phrase in his satirical diatribe. Let if further be known that party 'A' does not find his infringement humorous, satirical, funny, or cheeky, and that party 'A' will be serving party 'B' with a subpeona to appear in the 53rd district court. Furthermore, party 'A' is seeking $10.45 in compensatory damages and $4,000,000,000.00 in pain & suffering.
2. I haven't seen other O'Reilly books on PHP other than the pocket reference. However, the O'Reilly book MySQL/mSQL does devote some good chapters to PHP 3.0 & mod_perl.
Book Warning: 'Php3 : Programming Browser-Based Applications' by Medinets is one of the least helpful books I have ever purchased. If you're interested in combining PHP & MySQL, I'd recommend getting both the Wrox book and MySQL/mSQL.
if the article is biased. It's an editorial right, and editorials are inherantly one-sided because they're an expression of opinion. The writer has more experience with both KDE & Gnome than I do, so I'm happy to hear what he has to say about their usability and their future potential. The writer makes excellent points about:
Qt vs. GTK
KDE 2.0 and Koffice vs. StarGnomeOffice
Development styles between the 2 groups
I started out using Gnome when I first installed RH Linux 6.0, but grew weary of the constant crashes and switched to KDE. I find KDE and Gnome similar enough from an end-user standpoint that I'm just going to end up using the one that's most stable. But if KDE 2.0 and KOffice are as good as they're being hyped to be...now that might just be enough to make me choose a religion!
but I couldn't help noticing that the defendant's arguments are much more compelling than the plaintiff's. The plaintiffs come off sounding like a bunch of whiners whereas the defense actually makes a cogent case for free speech and fair use. BTW - I don't own a DVD player nor have I ever watched a DVD item.
Different groups of people in different occupations have occupied the '--Selfish' position throughout time. There have been the yuppies, MBA's, lawyers, engineers (ME & EE), etc. It's ironic that the people normally squashed as nerd pukes in the past are now in the position of power - And loving it!
Pathetic. They went with an overly gratuitous techfashion catch-phrase. They'd be well advised to give out the prizes and do the contest all over again.
I'm not sure the 'hype' is actually over. I'm not a big proponent of Java (if it fits the purpose then I'll use it), but just coming out of college I see a HUGE number of companies looking for Java developers. I think the fact is that Java has several advantages over C++ for certain tasks that are justifying its 'hype'.
Given the fact that many of the complaints aimed at your writing stem from its technical inconsistencies, have you considered having your material peer reviewed for technical accuracy?
Well I have to agree with Katz regarding the way Bezos has 'revolutionized' the way we shop. Cripes, it's catalog order without a telephone! Couldn't Time have at least used some imagination in coming up with someone that has actually done something revolutionary?
How about the people involved with the peace process in Ireland? What are they ~ rump roast? Or the main force behind a free operating system that offers people a real choice, and the freedom and opportunities to compute for free? Or.... hello Time ~ is anyone in there?
Point well made.

Card suggestions:
1. Go to jail - the Pinkertons picked you up from an 'anonymous' tip.
2. You become a simple cobbler to protest the Corporate Republic. You lose everything.
3. Say 'Geek Culture' 25 times and advance 3 spaces!
4. You turn that trenchcoat-wearing depressed kid in to the Pinkertons: you win a free hat!
5. You send an email to Rob criticizing Jon Katz's review of the movie 'Ghostbusters': Lose 4 Karma points.
As a reply to several comments:
1. Yes this page is rendering strangely.

I'm surprised Katz hasn't posted one of his witty reviews of it.
How many people have read the 1999 task? How many people understood it?

Ahhh Parsec... Let me wax nostalgic as I float back to the glory days on my TI-99 4a.
