    On the subject of patent trolls, Blackboard fits this, despite being such a horrible piece of crap.

    A-fucking-men to that chief. Blackboard is, bar none, the single nastiest most unintuitive piece of shit I have every had to deal with. It makes Lotus Notes circa 1995 look like genius. It makes Microsoft Clippy look like a good idea. I hate it. I want it gone. I would rather spend hours photocopying stuff and calculating grades by hand without a calculator than deal with that nasty piece of crap.

    make a movie in Flash or Director that simulates a BSoD, and set it as a full screen start up item. Computer starts, they get to see your desktop for 3 seconds and suddenly : BANG! BSoD.

    They will say "Let's restart it" and bingo: it happens again. They will let you pass. As you complain about Microsoft's craptastic OS.

    Open up two more tabs in your browser.

    In tab 1, go to Google maps and type in 3800 Steelhead way, the dalles, Oregon.

    In tab 2, do the same in mapquest.

    In both views turn on the Aerial/satellite view.

    Note: in mapquest, the Google facilities are CLEARLY visible. In Google, they are not. In fact, in the google view, it's nothing but open fields...

    In Google, click on street view, and go northwest along Steelhead until your about midway. Use the mapquest map to check your position relative to the buildings.

    Then turn the google street view camera north, and BINGO - you can see the Google facilities in the distance a couple blocks north, even though they are not visible in the google satellite view.

    Nothing like using Google's surveillance systems against itself. In less fraternal moments, I would call them a bunch of Paranoid Morons, but then I remember - "never attribute evil to a situation where incompetence or stupidity are simpler explanations..."

    Nah - they're paranoid morons... thank god for mapquest...

    WHY are they confiscating the computers in the first place? Anyone with even the slightest bit of sense could move huge amounts of data through the interweb, encrypted to and from one anonymous point to another. and if it's encrypted more than once, it's nearly impossible to decrypt. and if you then take that and turn it into a .bmp file, then it just seems to be a collection of static-like images with precious little info. And all you have to do is dump the data to a CDR or DVDR and stick with the rest of your music collection.

    This bill is NOT a sudden outbreak of common sense. A sudden outbreak of common sense would be to abandon this idiotic practice for the security theatre it is.

    And people wonder why I left and don't like returning to the USA. California uber alles.

    oh balderdash. How much did they test the mouse? sure It probably lived its miserable mouse life in its miserable mouse cage, but:
    what was its affect?
    Do you think they tested for how nice it was, or how friendly it was, or how smart it was? Probably not. They probably tested it to see if it would eat and shit properly, and live a statistically reasonable length of time in its nasty little mouse cage.

    What was its preference in flavours?
    Do you think it preferred sunflowers over millet or was it really fond of quinoa? Do you think they tested for that? Probably not.

    Was it outgoing or shy or psychotic?
    They probably couldn't tell. Did it have ADD? Probably never tested for it.

    No, it's not just junk. And the test you're describing was purely to see if removing a set of DNA resulted in something other than a still birth or a giant furry virus, by comparison to the finessed set of criteria I'm looking at.

    No, it's not junk. What it is, we don't know, but when we investigate, we find meaning. And saying they found no defects is meaningless. John Wayne Gacy was a perfectly functioning human. He just liked to KILL PEOPLE AND EAT THEM. Was it genetic? Probably not. But the ability to do so, by definition, had to be. (as opposed to say, antelope...)

    I stopped watching TV years ago. I still "watch TV" but only in the sense of viewing DVDs (for "quality viewing") or streaming video off youTube (for keeping up with immediate contemporary stuff, like Bill Maher).

    TV is done. It's going to die faster than radio, because I can listen to radio in my car.
