  2. AMD's Dual Core x2 4400+ problem as well on Faulty Microsoft Driver Saps Intel Core Duo power · · Score: 2, Informative

I just recently upgraded to X2 4400+ running Win XP SP2 and 2GB dual channel ram. OS is running off a 15k RPM drive, and storage is on 3 x 250GB 16mb cache drives. The motherboard is A8N32-SLI. Video card is eVGA nvidia 7800GT.

I can't run Windows for more than 24 hours before Outlook takes a hold of one of the CPU's. ending outlook process makes the system pick another process, usually explorer.exe, to take 50% of total CPU (or one whole processor). Shortly after, the entire system freezes.

Seems like AMD has a problem as well. So it could be a Windows issue with dual core processors.

I also applied the "windows dual core hot fix" (google that), and set the registry setting from the KB article to 1, which didn't fix it, so I set it to 0, and that didn't fix it either. So, my system is stable for ~24 hours then kaput.

  4. From my experience at Napster on Stopping Disruptive Users in Online Communities? · · Score: 5, Informative
When I headed the forums at Napster, Inc (the first generation with Shawn Fanning), disruptive users were a constant.

Without moderation, the forums would quickly fill up with junk. It took a full-time staff to moderate the forums to guarentee a certain level of quality.

My specialty is to build communities, and one of the key points is to outline who you want in the community and who you don't want. It seemed obvious that the ones you want are the athletes -- so your boundaries are to exclude all the ones that don't fit your desired community profile. In this case, you have a few options.

    1) Dedicate a lot of time to weed out the offensive material/users
    2) Let it continue on and hope it will flame itself out
    3) Make the community more exclusive (heavier barriers of entry -- more personal information, etc. This would allow users who want to re-register to jump through a lot of hoops each time.)

It seems like #2 was tried, and it seems like you don't have time for #1, so the solution would be #3 with as much #1 as possible.

I did a exe size comparison and guess what? They match the sizes you get from compiling from the source.

How it is obvious why Half Life 2 was delayed. They recently just found out about the network intrusion and they are doing a risk and damage analysis. It makes perfect sense to delay the release until it is known what exactly was taken/damaged. They don't want to ship a game with embedded trojans in it. You don't want to play a game from a company that was recently hacked. I'm surprised they didn't come clean before the code hit the net.
