Well it's now passed down thru games (There have been many thru the years, everything from Real Time Strategy to First Person shooters.) You get to feel and experience it, so it's not all lost. But it's not quite the same as reading a book, all perspectives are valid. Here are some current games about WW1: BattleField 1 - and there will be a new WW2 version coming out this year. (They have some good story elements and actually talk about the history of why the battles are happening.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Yea, they were running out of show ideas and were tired of talking about the Pyramids, so they got proactive and went out there and created their own news.
Chuck Lorre is also famous for one other thing. The After Show Vanity cards. You can read them all here, also in a book. http://www.chucklorre.com/inde...
Yes, this is all nice in principle, but a joke otherwise. DARPA and the military have been funding the research and development of AI and many other advancements since it started. Where do you think all the AI technology that Google and the self driving cars came from? Yes DARPA/ARPA. And there will always be large industrial military complex companies that will gladly take on those mega billion $ contracts to make AI weapons of all sorts. And the thing is, you can't stop it, you can't stop technology and you can't stop innovation.
But were do you draw the line? Are automated AI police forces ok then? Are automated AI cyber security bots ok? AI Guard dogs and automated security fences with lethal enforcement? AI automated UN troops?
See, you can't really say no without saying yes to something else.
Yes I agree, arrogant. We have always thought that we were the center of the universe until proven wrong, so we will think we are the only ones in this massive universe until proven wrong. Because as you all know, we already know everything there is to know, and just because someone says we can't do it, must mean that we can't. FTL is probably possible, in fact quantum mechanics does go FTL with it's spooky action, so there is a lot we don't know yet.
And maybe we should stop using resources like there is no tomorrow, that is all this planet does is consume everything, no rationing or even investing heavily into figuring out how to recycle all that junk and plastic.
You started off good AC, but then you seemed to have gone of into the I just think rather then I know category.
Yes the hardware is cheaper and GPUs are more powerful, but the math in NNs and CNNs and all that and the levels that you have in them could never have been done before.
There are many more people studying NN's now than ever, so we can try many more things.
It's not all about Big data and just processing your shopping habits, there is some real work going on in making these systems recognize the world. I view the current AI as building an intelligent Eye and sensors to the world.
We know alot about the brain down the how the Neurons work in so much detail it would blow your mind. What we don't know is how it all works together, it's hard to image specific individual neurons.
Self driving cars are not new, they are building on 15 years of research in the area and are doing some impressing things and with the connected world now, its easier to make them navigate around.
There are many computational cognitive models of how the mind works But they are not as complex and big enough to do the HAL like stuff we all want, we are brute force engineering a mind, like we did with airplanes, rather than build more organic ones like a birds.
It will come and AI is not going away, the complex robotic and Siri, Alexa like systems will only get more powerful.
So having a fleet of robots with 3 maids instead of having 20 maids and no robots seems like a good idea. Yes it will displace some people, but that always happens when new technology comes along. The service will go up, the prices will go down, the people will move on to better jobs with more skills, if not they will be out evolved. The robot service industry will create new jobs. Yes your 50,000 workforce will be reduced to 10,000, you can't stop technology and you can't fight corporate greed, but I view this as a good thing overall and a win for the customers. It might not happen this year, but in 5 years it will.
Yes this is exactly what happened to me. I got the iphone 6+ when it came out (buying it full price) thinking this will last me 3-4 years. Then 1 year later, I get the problem and the phone is unusable and I have to buy a new iphone 7+ and have to put it on monthly plan. I keep this one out of my back pocket and am careful to not bend it now. But it is clearly a defect and the bend was not that much.
None of this work is new, CMU and others were doing this 20 years ago. And we were using it on the Unmanned Ground Vehicles Project. We were not using GPS, but Neural Network Road following outdoors without roads with LIDAR and with cooperative robotic HUMVEE vehicles.
Warning, the planet is doomed! Please grab your belongings and head to the Ark Ships. If you are a scientist , engineer, or a doer Take Ark Ship C. If you are in a management or political position Take Ark ship A All others, Hairdressers, Telephone Sanitizers, etc..Take Ark Ship B.
The first Ark ship to depart will be B so hurry and get your things... Time is running out...
I know some people will find it slow and boring, but you have to remember when it came out.
There was no Internet, computers, handheld phones, no connection to anyone in the world.
I was a kid when I saw it, in re-runs and it was something that has stuck with me all my life, along with Blade Runner and Laurence of Arabia. They are all really Epic movies with Epic depth.
To me it's about the AI, the silence and the long parts that let you think and feel the movie. Maybe when your a kid and watch it and you have a specific personality then you can feel it.
You can see some of that in Nolan's movies, but very few movies do that today.
I am glad he is doing that and for the movies he does make, that are all paradoxes.
All you Na-Sayers and old timers that don't play games on your iPhone because your PC is better, well your not the target audience, and you probably never played a game on your phone or pad. Its not as bad as you would think and it's designed for those devices and the graphics are way better than you think. No one wants to lug around a PC computer to play a multiplayer game.
There is a place for everything for everybody,
BTW, I have been playing games since the 80's on all devices and still do, including PC.
What about Star Wars? That movie alone changed everything about how Hollywood makes movies and still has a lasting impact. It did not win best picture.
What about Jaws? That movies changes Society and how Hollywood made movies, and it was made on a small budget. That movie did not win best picture.
Those directors both changed all of Hollywood, especially Spielberg.
The brain is a lot more complex than people are giving it credit. The whole body and brain is even more complex and it is a system that works together. Neural networks of today are nothing like how the brain works. (They are similar to how a neuron works)
There are a few architectures that are used to simulate how the brain works on a computer (Cognitive Architectures), but they don't cover all aspects of them.(i.e. speech, cognition, emotion, creativity, reactive planning, complex situations, being above to apply knowledge in one field to another.)
Just by advancing the massive data gathering that is going on, is not a theory on how the brain processes it. I like to view all this deep learning today in vision as one part of the eye and brain, the part that can see something and recognize it, under certain constraints.
But it is no where near how a human can look out and see and track and classify and think about all the 1000's of objects that you see and the tens of thousands of objects, sounds, and things you see through out your day.
Hard AI will come, but it will take quite a few years. Just having new patents on deep learning algorithms is not a measure of understanding the complexity of the brain.
Neuroscience is advancing our understanding of the brain quite a bit these days, but there is no general architecture on how it all works.

Its because the traffic planning is so bad that they use these apps. I know quite a few bottle necks that if they fixed in LA would clean up a lot of traffic.
Agreed, Its not an either or, you should have both. But the laptop will empower the mind of a young kid, even if he doesn't have water or food, he will still be able to believe. The kid can't built a well or have the means to get fresh water to their state, that is a larger higher up problem, quite above the means of the kids.
I am happy and excited about being a multi-planet society. The earth is not big enough.
Its good to see positive people talk about a positive future and give people hope and something to look forward to.
I am glad that a civilian will step up and take his money and put it into something that will help people and the future!
Hard problems can only be solved through hard work and thinking outside the box.
