Didn't RTFA but this is the quick question that comes to mind when I read about all those studies... Also, what happens if you stop depressed people from using the Internet, do they feel better, worse, or the same?
Bullies don't have initially preferred targets, I bet they try to bully everybody, but they continue with people who don't fight back or don't know how to protect themselves, what are the chances that those people are the shy ones, the ones that don't get social clues, the ones that are a bit slower? Do we need a study for that?
"Doesn't even Ubuntu try to mimic this in some respects with its downloader?"
Don't even try to bring Ubuntu into discussion, there's a clear difference between making things easy to install and locking the OS, Ubuntu can run probably any piece of software that works in any other Linux distribution, even more, you can write your own software, compile it and run it, can you do that with iPad?
"An individual that develops white skin has not evolved, it has mutated."
I'm not being nitpicky about "individual that develops", but why do you think "evolution" is if not mutations that increase the adaptation of the organism to the environment?
If you do it manually it prompts you to restart it to benefit from the update, otherwise it does it in the background (if you run Windows, in Linux you need to use the package manager to upgrade it)
Know what you mean, but I have bluetooth off all the time and I tried to Wifi off, I might get an additional half-day of standby. I still think it's a lie, maybe only if the G3 signal would be so strong that the phone would charge from it:D otherwise I find those 300 hours a fairytale.
The article seem to claim that women avoid IT fields because of the geeky masculine (stereotyped) environment not because of the lack of interest in IT.
But, isn't this a more profound connection? Maybe because some women are not interested in IT issues they are also not interested in geeky stuff (Star Trek and the like) either and try to avoid it. So it might not be: "don't like male geek environment => don't go to IT field" relation it might be: "not interested in IT and geeky stuff => don't go to work in IT/geeky field" Which seems normal to me and doesn't blame anybody for anybody's choices, but hey, who is going to make money researching and publishing something like this...
People have been eating grocery store food for couple of hundreds of years (depending of what populations we talk about) that's not enough time to get "soft" from the evolutionary point of view.
Not really. Of course it would be devastating and millions would die, but don't discount the science, modern tools, and political advancements since 500,000 BC.
Why is that important, can't you understand the point? If primitive humans survived is likely that modern people would survive too (except for the people living in N. America)
No, my point was that whatever human-looking monkey that was exiting at that time (and it existed because Humans and Neanderthals diverged about 500,000 years ago) survived the eruption. So if Neanderthalians survived, the modern humans will probably be able to survive too.
North Americans are screwed indeed, but what do we care...
You have a poor understanding of what "malware" is or what Linux/Mac zealots claim.
Malware is piece of code, all OSes run code, therefore all OSes are vulnerable to malware. What Mac and Linux "zealots" claim is that it's not likely to get malware in Linux/Mac just by browsing a site, opening an e-mail, or just by keeping the computer on and connected to the network -- that hasn't changed.
"Repositories won't help with that, because people want 3rd party programs and games."
I am happy with 25,000+ programs available in Debian repository, I never install random package from the Internet. At least the basic packages should be available from the repos so the risk is at least reduced if not eliminated (depending on the behavior of the user)
In my experience people who use the word "zealot" lack arguments.
Can't you use Google Docs offline with Gears?

MEGA KILL!
"backups are never a bad idea."
Depends, for example you reduce the security of data with the number of backups you keep (you could encrypt them but that has it's own problems).

And you write this on Slashdot, you insensitive clod?!

No, you didn't understand, to mandate that the people had this choice.
How would that increase the alternatives? Would Apple start to sell an unlocked iPhone in US if AT&T would be required to provide more info?
What "protection"? Unlocked phones should be mandated by law like in EU (or at least some countries of EU).

This reminds me of my iPhone and Apple bullshit that the battery has a standby of 300 hours (12.5 days)... 300 hours my ass... more like 30.
You should use quotes, for example:
447,000 for "I hate AT&T"
145,000 for "I hate T-Mobile".
Watching the full 70 min of review was more entertaining than watching the movie.

Humans survived the 640,000 years ago eruption, they will survive again... how and in what shape... that's another story...
In a way is better to have one company I trust know all about my digital life than spread out that info to more companies.
