  1. Genetically modifying a plant to produce a pesticide was insane but they did it. There will always be intentioned consequences. For example make a plant herbicide resistant, and that resistance spreads to weeds in the same species and more and more herbicide is required and becomes toxic to us. How far will that genetic modification spread, what will be the consequences of turning out environment into a big ole trial and error lab.

I like GMO in algae, grown in a tank and not in the wild, specifically engineered to be very consumable, very little resistance and hence be eaten by everything out in the wild, can on grow in the tank for human consumption, Super foods, engineered with the right textures, flavours, nutrients and trace elements, anything is achievable in that design and once engineering, you could grow it in a controlled environment aquarium in your kitchen with your pet fish.

The only thing holding up nuclear energy is a better reactor design, rather than pulling down lots of energy in a short time from the fuel, pulling down a much smaller amount of energy over a much longer time, many reactors fuelled once, rather than a high output unstable reactor needing to be constantly refuelled. Still more work to be done on vertical axis wind turbines, all it needs is a smarter design to really take off and not that hard to do.

Coal is fucked and oil will follow, natural gas will last much longer refuelled by methane use, stop letting that energy go to waste at sewerage plants. Some countries could do more to reduce methane outputs by putting down large areas of heavy, thick black plastic, to collect methane and burn it to create energy, cheap energy. The distributed over the burbs solar power plant is also becoming a thing, turning every home in the burbs into a tiny power station connected to the grid to supply high density residential populations and low density commercial. Industry and zero waste recycling need the energy, need nuclear to function more cleanly.

Damage is a contentious issue in this case because of permanence of intent with regard to damage ie the data was not collected for today it basically was collected forever and hence the damage must reflect all potential damage throughout your life. That kind of damage reflects pretty much any potential, from a criminal using that data to track you down and kill you, or another to use that data to steal you identity, or someone using that data against your interest to manipulate you. That is the real problem, it is not about that harm today but the potential harm out to decades, or for the same number of years the data is collected, basically for you entire life, placing the rest of your entire live in unfair and unnecessary risk.

It extends further out into similar algorithms in terms of function written in different languages. Once it is written in one language it is often an auto translation into another, can you keep copyrighting the same instructions from language to language. Can I simply grab your code, translate it into a new language and claim new algorithm, because they will be different. So it is expressions of function, not creative writing, those expressions of function are bound to the coding language and the problem to be solved, based upon the language, there will always only be one best way to solve any problem, in terms of compact, accuracy and code function. Writing software has much more in common with writing maths equations that writing a book, it is far more tilted to set expressions to solve set problems. You can not programme it in an alternate fashion, the code language binds you to a set best method for any specific problem.

It is akin to claiming copyright on lego block house, of set size and form and claiming yours is unique, when only one most efficient solution is possible. It is less creative writing and more assembling bits of code language.

Of course steps should start to be formulated and plans established to 'repair' the damage as it has long since passed the point where damage could be prevented. It is also very likely that China and Russia will not be very responsive to change as they suffer far less than the US from sea level rise, the entire US east coast is pretty much screwed, so they have an incentive to keep burning because the impacts are far less for them. They can effectively declare carbon war on the US and oh look, the US government will in the most insane fashion imaginable, help.

Forget about how to stop the damage, that time has passed. The damage is coming and it will get worse, much worse and it is too late. Now how to repair the damage, how to fix the problems and how to relocate the populations of the US east coast cities, a foreshore of rubble is no fun place to live, toxic and dangerous. The first metre of sea level rise will be down to weather not climate, hence far more sudden and much more devastating. Climate reflects averages over time, weather ain't like that, weather is the extremes, that is it's impact, drought, floods, storms, heat wave, blizzards, hurricanes or typhoons, normal everyday weather is climate, unfortunately it does not happen every day, sometimes extremes and a series of extremes can run up a metre of sea level rise far quicker than most can imagine.
