Microsoft Fights Fake News With NewsGuard Integration in Its Mobile Edge Browser (pcworld.com)
In a bid to fight fake news read while on your phone, Microsoft's mobile Edge browser on Android and iOS now includes the NewsGuard extension. From a report: The addition needs to be toggled on within the Edge settings menu to be enabled. Once it is, Edge will display a small shield icon next to the site's URL in the search bar: a green shield with a checkmark for a trusted news site, and a red shield with an exclamation point inside of it for a site that NewsGuard believes isn't always accurate. (Some sites haven't been evaluated, and these will simply show a gray shield.)
So, how much do you think it would cost for sites to pay M$ to trust it.
I think somewhere in the $50000-$500000 range.

The UK Daily Mail, a well-known source of ill-informed and reactionary garbage.
We should simplify this and instead provide a liberal or conservative flag. Unfortunately many people value political implications over the truth. It's the sad reality of living in a post-fact world.
You know how politicians & corporations promote a new law or policy or whatever, ostensibly for one thing but it almost always turns out ineffective for it & much better suited to something else that nobody would've supported or voted for? Well, what do you think all these new censorship tools & systems are really for?
Because we are trained journalists who have spent our careers dedicated to the profession. We care deeply about reliable journalismâ(TM)s pivotal role in democracy. (In case youâ(TM)re wondering, our experienced journalists come from diverse backgrounds and have no political axes to grind.)
Because you can see the credentials and backgrounds of everyone responsible for every NewsGuard reliability rating and Nutrition Label that you read. For the names and biographies of our staff and contributors, click here.
Because we have an ethics and conflicts of interest policy to which all of our analysts and editors have to agree. You can read that policy here.
Because we are totally transparent about how we make all of our decisions. Our Nutrition Label write-ups explain what is behind our decisions. We disclose and explain in detail the nine criteria we use to rate each news site on its journalistic practices. Weâ(TM)re not a black box algorithm.
Because we make concerted attempts to get comment from every websiteâ(TM)s editor or manager before we write anything negative about the site, and always include the comment in our Nutrition Labels (or make changes after weighing the comment and realizing our initial conclusion was wrong). Algorithms donâ(TM)t call for comment.
Because we will post any complaints from website proprietors about anything we have written about them. And we will answer them publicly â" and when warranted will make corrections, publicly, after we consider the complaint. You can read our policy for correcting errors or mistakes here.
Because we accept no fees from the news websites we rate. (Our revenue comes from the platforms and search engines for licensing our ratings in order to include them in their feeds and search results.) We rate all news and information sites among the approximately 4,500 sites responsible for 98% of the online engagement in English in the United States.
Because we do not collect any personal information of any kind from those who download and use our browser plug-ins. None. You can read our privacy policy here.
Because bringing more information to people about the news sources they encounter online is our only business. Our success depends entirely on being trustworthy and reliable.
'nuff said.
The problem with this NewsGuard extension is that the more likely someone is to need it, the less likely they are to want it (and the more likely they are to actively dislike the idea of it).
"When information is power, privacy is freedom" - Jah-Wren Ryel
Because it's backed by the neocons. You remember them, right? The folks whose handling of intelligence over Iraq made Obama's handling of the DIA report on ISIS look like a highly cordial disagreement between respectful parties? If they say that Hitler is a bad guy, you better get independent sources.
Newsguard is a Deep State neoliberal offshoot of the five-eyes project that the West uses to spy on every Human on our planet.
Gpovernment sponsored fake news outlets like the BBC (the BBC was at the forefront of pushing Tony Blair's now well documented lies about Iraq that Blair used as 'justification' for invading that nation) get a perfect score from Newsguard, as does the despised Fabian mouthpiece, The Guardian newspaper. Outlets that opppose and expose neoliberal war-mongering are, of course, given terrible ratings by Newsguard.
So the SECULAR Middle East states that were targeted for extermination (Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen etc) to allow Saudi Wahhabi forces to impose women/gay hating regimes to benefit Iz-real, are all demonised by 'news' outlets with 'perfect' scores by Newsguard.
Of course this weekend we literally witnessed the Newsguard approved fake news outlets literally accuse a boy of FACECRIME (the neoliberal 'crime' described in Orwell's 1984) for just standing passively when a George Soros agitator stormed into his face and attempted to intimidate him, while Soros camera-people carefully shot demonising footage that could be carefully edited to give a fake narrative about the event. Needless to say, none of the Newsguard approved outlets published the full and complete hours of video footage that clearly showed the progesssion of the George Soros sponsored spy-op.

Who determines what is "fake news"?
This should scare people. Don't they realize we are ASKING businesses/governments to make judgement calls of what is fake news? Translation: People are asking these entities to censor what they feel is fake news.
This seems like a dangerous idea to me. Heavens know a business will not call something it doesn't like to be fake news. Nor would a government who doesn't agree with certain ideas would call something fake news.

BuzzFeedNews rated as trustworthy. Nope.
I guess Microsoft is competing with Google in the Wokelympics.
Finally, Microsoft Bob finds a market!
I'm a grownup human being. I don't need a company (that has its own bias and agenda) telling me which news sources to trust and which to distrust.
I knew right away Microsoft's opinion was worthless when I followed the link in the summary and saw Breitbart flagged. Yes, Breitbart has a right-leaning bias, but it's like an antidote to the main stream media's false and biased reporting.
You all probably don't see it because of your hatred for everything Trump, but in my nearly 66 years I've never seen so much hatred for a president from the press, a press that's SUPPOSED to be unbiased.
Just a few years ago Trump was getting awards from the NAACP, but now he's racist? Don't be so stupid to believe shit like that. Show some independence and intelligence, for Pete's sake. I see you and I see sheep.
to both talk shit about right-leaning news outlets and by their presence to make us believe we need some white knight (like NewsGuard!) to ride to the rescue.
What a nice feature . . if this was employed on any other browser besides Edge Mobile or even if this was an on feature.
The people who would have this app installed and be included to enable this in settings represent the smallest market share also are probably the demographic least affected by Fake News.
people-older-than-65-share-the-most-fake-news-study-finds
For some hilarity, I would love to see the telemetry data on this. 0.00000000001% of market share.
Thanks for trying Microsoft, but this isn't the feature that is going to win us over. You have lost the mobile browser.
Any word on pricing? I'd very much like to become a "trusted news source."
A government is a body of people notably ungoverned - AC
This comes down to:
If you want to believe it, no amount of other people telling you its fake is going to change things.
I wish all people would approach all new with skepticism and do a bit of homework before believing mydumbnews.com, but that isn't going to happen.
While the Daily Mail follows the SAME neo-liberal warmongering agenda of slashdot, it does have a habit of far more comprehensive reporting of world news than the BBC or other blairite-beloved outlets.
The BBC and other 'perfect' green score neoliberal outlets use the old PUSH NEWS trick of using a tiny number of news slots to NEVER report on 'difficult' stories that are hard to spin. Like a library that only has room for 100 books.
On the other hand, the Daily Mail has an extraordinary number of news-slots each day, and even tho 'difficult' stories are relegated to slots away from the main page, they do get covered. Indeed, this is the main way the Daily Mail grows its own 'five eyes' pleasing audience.
While slashdot preaches to self-satisfied dribblers, statist propaganda operations are vastly more sophisticated. Newsguard is aimed at literal cretins. But the Deep State has many targets, of whom the dribblers of slashdot are but a small minority.
The 'problem' with Newsguard is that it makes the mechanism of Orwellian control too upfront. But the 'fightback' will be mostly seen from FAKE anti-statist outlets that themselves are really part of the same Orwellian continuum.
The REAL story was the Soros psy-op pushing civil war in the USA this last weekend, when Soros had some of his agitators intimidate a bunch of schoolkids. This event had the ironic result of proving how FAKE NEWS most outlets are, when these outlets jumped on Soros sponsored tweets to demonise the children for political gain.
"just fucking trust us" -- satya nadella
Maybe we should stop giving credibility to bloggers, journalism hacks, and stories that lack any factual presentations. Some people seem OK with tabloid style journalism just because it supports their belief system. Doesn't matter if a hint of it is true, factual or has any real credible sources. So the solution is fake news filters? Maybe demand better journalism would be a better option.
Both of them.
They refuse to accept money from the sites they rate. Which makes sense, because it hardly seems the couple of million dollars would be worth the loss of trust that would cause.
Your ad here. Ask me how!
Anything it claims is untrue, should probably be paid extra attention to so that you can get a sense of what the mainstream media is trying to hide.
"There is more worth loving than we have strength to love." - Brian Jay Stanley
Because we have all had proper indoctrination into leftist politics, you can be sure all our approved sources unflinchingly follow right think. Our team of specialists is prepared to readily ignore all the mistakes friendly news sources make, as long as their bias agrees with us. We are also promise to categorize any mistake that slants to the wrong side as profound evidence for systematic banishment as fake news.
You should let the idiots talk and prove themselves idiots. More effective.
Now, if the government and people are afraid too many will be fooled...then all that money they take from us by force to indoctrinate our kids must be getting wasted doing that instead of teaching critical thinking and other useful skills - we make them so stupid they take out huge non recourse loans and overpay to get degrees in things that there are no jobs doing, in an economy that now requires every adult in a household to have a job just to get by, unlike when I grew up - proof right there.
And maybe that idea is one of the "fake news" issues they'd just as soon have censored - that despite high costs, they are teaching people at best to consume, obey, sleep - and not think, nope, that's dangerous to them. George Carlin had it right, they don't want people who can think.
Why on earth do these folks want to be the arbiters of truth? What makes them the god that discerns what is truth? I just don't get it.
I just wish they would but out. There is no way they can know truth. They are not God.
Sigh.
But I guess the reality is that they have a product to sell and if they can find a way to persuade you to believe their product is superior -- not really superior but how in you opinion it is superior -- you will use it and there will be the almighty dollar in their pocket. It's all about clicks and dollars. Truth is not it. Making you think that they are altruistic, giving you truth, and supplying click to them is all they care about. Why the heck you idiots don't get this is beyond me...

They aren't real news, and they aren't fake news....
they're satirical news for purposes of humor, with such absurd topics that any literate person should immediately recognize the article content as satire past the first paragraph or so, even if they were living under a rock and didn't know what TheOnion was. Are they going to get the dreaded "Fake News Warning" anyways?
George Orwell describes 'facecrime' in his book, 1984. This weekend we saw 'trusted' pundits on the fake left and fake right demand the literal MURDER of a child on the basis of his 'facecrime' when George Soros ran a carefully calculated psy-op in Washington DC, and used twitter to seed his fake news.
The outlets that were at the forefront of demanding that 'facecrime' be used to 'convict' a boy whose crime was holding a nervous smile as a Soros agitator banged a drum in his face, are all 'perfect score' 'trusted' Newguard/MS outlets. Of course these same outlets all lied in co-ordination about WMDs in Iraq, and got TWO MILLION Humans butchered there by Tony Blair and his invading forces.
Hey, but we all know PROVEN liars and warmongers who demonise are clearly the 'best' 'trustworthy' outlets when it comes to coverage of 'news' today.
Bill Gates originally founded Microsoft using White Boy Privilege trust fund money from relatives in America's EUGENIC movements- the same movements that gave the Nazis of Germany their psuedo-science approach to 'race'- psuedo-science originally created in the USA in the 19th century to justify slavery. Bill Gates and his Microsoft billions is at the forefront of 21st century eugenics programs - so of course Microsoft, which is STILL controlled by Gates, promotes Newsguard.
Remember, every one of the 'five eyes' neoliberal Newsguard approved news outlets that operated during Blair's run up to Blair's invasion of Iraq sold Blair's LIES about Iraq and Saddam- leading to the murder of two million Humans, and the creation of ISIS, the Saudi backed wahhabi terror organisation used by the West in an attempt to destroy secular Syria.
GameboyRMH and his team have butchered millions of Humans in the name of saudi and zi-onist supremacy since Blair first rose to power, and the 'trusted' 'news' outlets have propagandised for these wars non-stop.
This weekend we watched as Team GameboyRMH demonised a bunch of schoolkids with a very carefully constructed Soros psy-op- a psy-op that relied 100% on fake news reporting by all the outlets GameboyRMH demands you trust. The outlets this neo-na-zi tells you to avoid then posted continuous unedited footage that revealed the true course of events, and that for statis scum like this is the real problem.
While this statist scum loves the fact that Blair has saturated much of the world with Orwellian surveillance, ordinary people must never be allowed to use the same tech to prove their innocence in the court of public opinion. To statist horrors like GameboyRMH, the ability of the BBC and CNN to edit footage to tell whatever lying narrative they desire is essential.
The lying about WMD in Iraq by the world's 'trusted' media is a fact that even horrors like GameboyRMH cannot deny. So how does it deal with this 'inconvenient' fact? Same as any statist secret police officer. To demonise outlets not under statist control.
How is grandpa going to notice this new icon with all the toolbars installed?
the preceding comment is my own and in no way reflects the opinion of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

With an OS level GUI direct over your browser on your smart phone.
Domestic spying is now "Benign Information Gathering"
For a tool that claims they care about transparency they really do their best to prevent you from looking up a list of sites and their ratings.
If anyone is interested, I dug into the code for the chrome extension and grabbed their API URL so you can look up sites without having to install their extension:
- Trusted: CNN
- Trusted: Daily Caller
- Trusted: The Independent
- Trusted: Mother Jones (lol)

- Trusted: BuzzFeed News (ok this is just sad)
- Not Trusted: Breitbart
- Not Trusted: Daily Mail
Looks fair and balanced to me.
Nothing personal but most non-technical users use whatever comes with their computer. Frankly, that's Edge. Honestly, the majority of people who support Trump are pretty lazy when it comes to fact checking and won't believe anyone else. Throw up a notice in their browser and there you go... you just stopped a potential troll from posting.
Thank you.
This is real, although the smiling boy story is yet another diversion so you're giving it coverage it shouldn't deserve, except there it is.
What about Kerch incident : Ukrainians cause it, get arrested, few minor injuries. NATO countries diplomacy pretend to buy the official media story and act "outraged". Who knows about THAT?
Also, Microsoft releases their crappy Edge Android add-on. About simultaneously, Integrity Initiative wipe their web site and Twitter because they got uncovered for a while and everyone would know they're a front for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office peddling Russophobic stories and other black propaganda.
How many people are REALLY using Edge anyway...... It only has 4% so who really cares!
Seriously. Wake up and read the NY Times. I do. Notice how many articles they have blaming the Saudis for war crimes, while whitewashing the Iranian coup in Yemen. See how they completely ignore that the Iranian controlled militias in N. Iraq have ethnically cleansed the area between Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan. Notice that they've ignored that the Iranian army is close to encircling Saudi Arabia. See that there's no mention that conquest in Yemen will allow the Iranian theocracy control the Bab el Mendeb ... the narrows of the Red Sea, and consequently control all shipping to Europe through the Suez.
Yeah, no Iranian propaganda there.
Who evaluates the people who evaluate?
Anything that the media bigwigs don't like (ie anything not Leftist) will now be censored. Thank you for your cooperation.
Guess (((what tribe))) the CEOs of Newsguard belong to?
Google bubbles.. Microsoft bubbles... Live on the edge, err.. I mean, frontier.. don't become a victim of bubbles..
For those that have not used Newsguard its a useful tool. Newsguard has done significant research and offers a comprehensive profile and a reason to believe/not believe the news source. If they come up with strikes against a news outlet they give that outlet the opportunity to refute their findings before the integrate the information into the their app.
Sadly they are blocking one of my favorite sites: Jihadwatch.org. No I don't use Edge. But Jihadwatch put up a story on it.
NewsGuard
A training-bra, a bib, and Depends for frightened "progressives" in search of a safe space for news.
Mandalay Bays for all leftist MFERs
They brag that one of their qualifications is that they are career journalists.... So, like Chris Cuomo, Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite, and Jim Acosta, they're completely unbiased and trustworthy, RIGHT?
Let's see how they rate NBC and CNN (who spent an entire day ranting that Trump should be impeached for telling his lawyer to lie to congress..... EVEN AFTER THE SPECIAL COUNSEL's OFFICE DISPUTED THE UNDERLYING REPORT).
Those two press outlets alone have reported hundreds of false stories againt Trump over the past two years, while mysteriously never reporting a single flase anti-Obama story over the 8 years of his time in office and even ectively suppressing negative TRUE stories about the Obama admin. They also used edited video to inflame huge numbers of people against some highschool kids visiting DC several days ago to the point that numerous people were making DEATH THREATS against those kids, and they'd have gotten away with it had the entire video not surfaced.
I judge any Mexican restraunt on its rolled chicken tacos; if they're good, then the rest of the menu will be good or even great, but if they get those wrong then the rest is likely poor. Same thing here with news bias; if the reviewer thinks NBC or CNN is credible in the Trump era, then the reviewer is a joke.
Don't think for yourself, citizen! Just keeping watching the same Jewish media that lied to you (over and over and over again) about "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, in a country that had never done ANYTHING to the Jewnited States... This is just laughable. Anybody who believes 'NewsGuard' or 'Snopes FactCheck' is a sheep of the highest order, i.e. a thick idiot who doesn't like thinking for themselves.
Says the butthurt #MAGAtard who's been crying over two-term Barry for the past 10 years and two-term Willy for the past 25. Everybody knows Repugs are doing more crying over Hillary, than anyone else. Think about it; you can't watch Faux-"News" for more than ten minutes without them mentioning one of the three.
Nobody can beat that. That , comrade, is butthurt **at it's finest **
Protip: Don't vote for one-term Trumps
Or is your excuse going to be that he did such a great job, they told him he only needed to serve one term?
The UK Daily Mail, a well-known source of ill-informed and reactionary garbage.
The Daily Mail are well documented peddlers of hate:
https://stopfundinghate.info/category/daily-mail-advertisers/
You certainly write like one, your post is full of the same sort of fact-free drivel found in the Daily Mail every day.
It is the worst sort of yellow reporting possible.
Oh look the Microsoft shills have mod points! Assholes.
The funniest part about this "Soros psy-op" is that if you watch ALL the footage, it damns the MAGA kids even more. You can see exactly how threatening they were being. Naturally the MAGAts have (very poorly) edited their own version for all of us to laugh at while they cry and whine about how it's real, even though all evidence proves it's edited, and very poorly at that.
