only really for high end laptops though. for the low end, apple can't compete, the ibook is still more expensive in that range.
spent about 6mths research comparing price and features and ended up with a 17" powerbook. feature for feature the mac beats any comparable specs product from dell, ibm, etc. on everything but CPU power.
Agree with you. I think he was only referring to if China, Japan and Korea's initiatives end up not adopting open standards. If their system is based on Unicode and running a customized variant of linux with focus on their respective language as the default interface, it should be just fine.
Ultimately if they are smart enough, that's the way they'll go.
lots of ppl here seem to not know the hierarchy that STT is under.
STT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Singapore Government. It is the Singapore Gov's investment arm. Frankly I wouldn't trust the Singapore government one bit. Temasek Holdings also has substantial ownership in various Telcos all over the world which in turn means that the Singapore government can affect the telecommunications infrastructure on a worldwide basis. For example, Temasek indirectly owns roughly 33% Telkomsel, the largest mobile provider by a huge margin in Indonesia, about 25% of Globe Telecoms, one of the 2 players and actually the larger one in the Philippines. The list goes on and on, and now its got its hands on one of the largest bandwidth providers in the world. Frankly I am scared.
Singapore's well known to be an autocracy posing as a democracy with lots of sujugation of freedom of expression, and freedom, do you know that they can jail you without so much of a unbiased trial for speaking out against government policies. The courts in Singapore are a political sham because any politic trials is always judged in favor of the government which is technically run by 1 party (nice parallel to china here, what do you think the judgement against you would be in China if you were on trial for bashing the Red Party).
Singapore is also a well-known haven for haboring rich criminals. Indonesia has been asking Singapore to extradite its rich citizens who have fled to Singapore to avoid the corruption charges brought upon them after the downfall of suharto. Guess what, the singapore government refuses, and proceeds to blabber on about Indonesia's human rights abuses, while they themselves do the same exact shit. The truth is these rich indonesians have transferred substantial portions of their wealths in the tens of billions US dollars into Singapore's banking system. The singapore government rather have this illegal gotten money stay in their banks than return it to the ppl of indonesia (of course the fact is the indonesian politicians will probably gobble it up into their own pockets if singapore ever gives it back, but at least its back in the pockets of indonesians)
Surrounded on all sides by Muslim countries and thus it has an impressive military compared to its neighbors. The least known fact is that Singapore unlike Taiwan is 100% undefensible. Taiwan still has the pacific ocean to receive supplies from international community in the event of a china invasion, much like britain during WW2 where the nazis were unable to contain the supplies coming in from the atlantic. In Singapore's case, there are 2 straits which Singapore is accessible by sea, on both sides you have Malaysia and Indonesia, just find a world map and take a look at it. These 2 muslim countries can have an effective blockade there, which leaves airdrops as the only alternative, and everyone knows cargo planes are easily shot down.
Another interesting fact is that over 80% of Singapore's water and food supplies come from Malaysia and Indonesia. If i ever wanted to make Singapore a muslim country by invasion, i'd just turn off the tap and stop the food shipments. Blockage the sea routes for 2-3 mths, and watch Singapore's supplies dwindle. i don't even have to fire a single bullet to bring singapore to its knees.
Frankly global crossing is better to be left in the hands of the americans than Singapore, oh well.......

took me a year to see the appeal of SMS. these days I just look at it as the "pager" function of a mobile phone. especially useful when you need to inform someone of something while that person's in a meeting
One of the biggest taboos when dealing with non-geek related side of any business is demanding a client to conform to your document standards. If the client sends you a file in.doc, you better make sure you send your files in.doc back to the client. Any time a client calls up complaining about being unable to read or open your documents, your job security is on the line.
I did a test on our secretarial staff, I had them try OO once, they still stick to their MSO mentality. Most of the questions are where can I find menu feature X or Y, its not where its supposed to be or the like. New hires are all versed in the nuances of MSO and most never heard of OO.
It is very difficult for us to switch over to OO at all. All the top management have considered OO for a very long time but reality is that we just can't do it because of our business realities and the education in computing usage being provided in our region are 95% based on MS products.
erm.... The manufacturers and suppliers of the components don't lose any money. The reason why console makers lose money is because they sell the consoles at less than what it costs to make em..
So ATI is still gonna bill MS at a profit for their chips, MS eats this cost, and attempts to recover it via software sales.
NO hardware manufacturer or parts supplier loses money in console production. They may sell it to MS at cost or close to cost in exchange for other benefits, but they won't sell at a lost.
Actually windows since 2k has virtual desktop via powertools iirc. Its just not a very advertised feature because it doesn't work very well. But it is there.
I doubt many of the Chinese immigrants went willingly. Maybe the beareaucrats did, doubt the other folks did. At the height of the British empire, there were no indications of mass migration to the colonies even though it meant many brits could've lived like a king in the colonies with tons of servants to cater to their every whim. Majority stayed at home (australia's a different matter =P)
It more like Assimilation not Colonization. Colonization = control the resources, exploit it, ship it back to homeland.
Colonization failed when the natives and immigrants finally had it with having to ship their stuff back to homeland and took up arms to declare independence. Happened all over the world. Hell the US was formed like that.
Frankly I doubt your statement that if Scotland actually voted for independence that the folks in London would actually allow it to happen. Have not seen a government anywhere in the world that would allow a part of their country to secede away without going through a violent period. Invasion, Independence wars, etc.
isolationism is good for large countries with huge industrial potential, I would say.. Given that isolationism was one of the key ingredients that led to the US being the power that it is today. But then prolonged isolationism would've been disasterous for the US especially if it had to deal with a Europe under Hitler and Asia under Japan. Isolationism kept long enough and then come out at the most opportune time and kick major ass would be, I think, a better way. Hey, its proven by history twice over to work!
US and China are both headed for a showdown, I don't think anyone is going to argue about that. Any government is all about self-preservation and any good government will by any means neccessary do just that. US gov is especially adept at that due to the leverage they have globally. The US gov both civilian and military has caused huge havoc all over the world but most of the time the results are either direct or indirect benefits to the people of the US. Depending on which end of the stick you are, you are gonna have different feelings towards it. (well maybe not the politically correct hypocrites, bash the very government that will ensure the majority of US citizens will have a better quality of life than most other countries, sure sometimes their methods are unethical but who cares, not like other govs never did that)
"containing" China is in the best interest of the US since it will prolong the time to the inevitable confrontation, not to mention economical benefits between now and then.
The US's regional interest in asia is just the same as in the middle east. There's lots of yet unexploited resources in asia ripe for the picking. Ultimately I think everything really boils down to how much economical benefits i'll reap rather than how morally righteous I am.
I think the trend by the Chinese old guards is to slowly phase out their system of government. Given what I know of Chinese culture, the changes will be very gradual (too slow for the media, militant human rights activists, et al), since the norm is not to let your elders "lose face", so all the changes will probably come when the middle class is firmly established as the economic might of the country and all the old guards have died off. My feeling is that they are letting change come to them instead of effecting the changes with total disregard.
I sure hope I don't live to see the day that China and US become openly hostile towards each other. That would be bad and I think Einstein might get his prediction right, the 4th World War will be fought with sticks and stones, if we do see the day the 2 powers actually clash. Let's just hope it stays purely a battle of economics.
Plus my justification is really that Tibet was/is/has been part of Imperial China over history, nothing wrong with them wanting it back again.
Not exactly knowledgeble about the situation in the UK but from the surface knowledge that I have, I could very well say that England is agressive and has taken over Wales, Ireland, Scotland, et al! Same shit, different times, different international crowd to deal with but still the same shit.
I wonder what would the US do if Hawaii suddenly decided to declare independance, break away. After a hypothetical 50 or so years of being the country of Hawaii, and the US suddenly invades and takes back Hawaii. Would this hypothetical situation be any different from what China did to Tibet. Lots of native pacific islanders in Hawaii too!
That is ZU YIN IME or ZHU YIN depending on which romanization method you use to pronounce it. Its still around and IMO is the most accurate/fastest IME for Chinese, too bad China did away with it and went with PIN YIN although I have seen clerks using PIN YIN ime at incredible speeds. They can input Chinese faster than I can type in English and I type pretty damn fast in English.
I wouldn't call it that... Its almost like saying Stalin achieved greatness, et al.
mao has some viable valid contributions to China which cannot be denied. but his destructive acts is just as great if not greater than his achievements.
cultural revolution, gang of four, red guards, etc.
the consolation is that at least mao was more dedicated to defending the homeland from japanese invasion than the nationalists were.
oh yeah as we are on this topic of holocaust.. why is it that everyone talks about the jewish holocaust and nobody talks about the chinese holocaust?
I think the japanese buried alive more chinese in mass graves than the jews that hitler managed to kill. but than of course you can argue that it really wasn't a holocaust for the chinese.... a billion more where that came from =)
The Qing Dynasty destabilized themselves before the europeans came on the scene.
Plus the manchus were considered barbarians by the ethnic chinese, whenever you have a non-native, minority in control, you'll always have instability. They should've taken a page from the US. Turn the non-native minority into a native majority and own the land =)
Actually since we are talking about China here, there is really only 1 major input system for it far as I am concerned.
Romanization IME aka PinYin.
But if you take into account all the other formats then we have the following iirc
Zu Yin Chang Jie Da Yi Bu Shou
I think you can also use input based on code assigned to a character.
I think since this is a China machine, having Pin Yin IME is more than sufficient since anyone who went to school is taught Pin Yin, not as accurate as Zu Yin but then only the traitorous taiwanese dogs use Zu Yin! =P
And I think anyone who did not go to school or is literate probably does not know how to use a computer anyways.
1. The simple act of being kicked out of Europe does not give you the right to take over the New World from the Natives.. BUT YOU DID!! and forced them into reservations for their own protection... =) (I'm not saying that is wrong either.. its a basic law of science by some dude they call darwin.. survival of the fittest or some crud)
2. If you go back 5000 years, what is now known as China was actually many separate kingdoms, bout 8 or 9 and yes today's Tibet belonged to one of those kingdoms and the land of Tibet over the last 5000 years have been off and on, in and out of "China's" control. Some uprising here and there changes possession of control throughout the years. Look at the greeks, romans, normans, franks, etc.. they all did the same shit, so why is it that when China does it, China is the evil empire and when the europeans does it, its A-OK.
China's autocratic regime does have its drawbacks, but then again it does have its usefulness. Many critics of the system based their assessment on the assumptions of their own environment and did not take into account the cultural, economical, educational differences.
There are some ideas which we deem extremely previous which runs counters against other cultures and we think people who do not adopt what we deem precious is EVIL...(pinky to the lips!). Democracy is a system that can only work when education, cultural, and economic standards are of a level that can sustain a democratic system. Every other country that has tried to implement a democractic system that has not achieve a certain threshold in these categories have failed miserably. Taiwan, Russia, Japan, Indonesia, etc.. list goes on and on.
3. The US government isn't good at fooling their own people with bold faced lies? Please google Bushism, it provides a good read to counter your arguments =). Not to mention that we are known for buying political, military and economical favors with our "AID" packages. recent examples.. turkey, pakistan, et al. let us use your land as base for our iraq campaign and we promise give you X billion (in fine print but we will have to get congressional approval in addition to the presidential promise, so the AID package MIGHT not be there). So we just package our lies a little better but what's the difference?
4. Regarding vietnam, my understanding was due to political and social reasons, the government never commited enough military support to make the war winnable, all the hippie protests (really just an excuse to say FUCK over a PA system a lot, get alot of people in one place to have free casual sex and complain at the government imo), the morale issue of the soldiers there where it seems that most of them don't know why the fuck are they doing in the jungles of vietnam. The US finally left because it became too economically, and politically unsustainable for them to continue in vietnam. Thus vietnam became the only war in modern history that the US technically lost, now if the US actually focused the entire might of its military powers in vietnam, there won't be tributes to uncle ho in vietnam right now. There'll be an american flag there instead.
5. Based on what I have read of ancient and modern historical text (last 4500 years) Other than wars within the area in what is known as China today, the "Chinese" has never actually invaded another country. (Parts of North Korea was actually part of China off and on over history). The japanese and korean kingdoms also deferred to the decisions of the chinese emperors and used the chinese emperors as leverage politically in their own kingdoms. You can find references to that in many of the historical accounts.
China has also never engaged in colonialism even though they had more than enough power militarily to do so in the past. In the Ming dynasty, a fleet that contained over 100 ships set sail under the command of Admiral Cheng Ho. He visited many places and iirc went all the way to Africa. Whenever he arrived at a new place, instead of setting up colonies, he did a PR camp
Far as I have encountered, although legally US court decisions have no bearing on cases in most countries in Asia, with the exception of the "Commie" Countries, the decision made by US courts on the similar case are usually used as evidence in Asian courts, and the courts here usually come to the same ruling as the US courts because either the judges are too lazy to actually finish the trial and follow the reasoning that if the US ruled that way, its good enough for me, or some other lameass reasoning.
In high profile cases, even the commie courts can be swayed.
I highly doubt SCO would try to pull suits off in Asia other than places like Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan. Too much hassle and not enough money to be made in the other places if they win.
Piracy has been ramphant in Asia for years, if companies like Microsoft could've made money from lawsuits in Asia, they would've already done so ages ago. No point in paying millions in legal fees when the companies being sued can't even pay the settlement.
I think that you, like the current administration, still overestimate the power of the USA.
Actually I'm working in Asia right now, the clout that the US can bring to bear is not just militarily, but its economic clout is immense and the US is not only exporting IP. Its still exporting immense numbers of various commodities that many countries are buying.
Exporting is only part of the picture, the imports that the US buys can be upwards of 40% of many 3rd world countries' total exports, if the dollar were to deflate that much, many of these countries would have their economy collapse as well.
The US Dollar is still the preferred international currency. Until there is another widely accepted currency, nobody would want the US dollar to collapse since many companies outside of the US has most of their current assets based upon US dollar. Euro or any of the European currencies aren't even close to being widely accepted, and you can forget about the asian currencies, the only possibility is the yen and japan isn't in too good a shape for companies to want to use the yen.
Most Americans (mainly caucasians) who work in asia are viewed as arrogant by most of the locals however the colonial mentality still has not really disappear in the sub-conscious of the ex-colonized asians. You would see these asians very sub-servient to white Americans (hell actually any caucasian) but curse at them behind their backs.
In any case, Americans are and have been considered the most arrogant of all caucasians. Its not hard to see why though, power breeds arrogance and we are used to speaking in a very direct manner which usually comes across as arrogance in other cultures and americans aren't exactly known for being sensitive to other cultures.
Just consider part of my benefits for working in asia, the company provided me with a car, an apartment, 2 maids, 1 driver. I have 3 assistants handling my schedule and paperwork and I'm only a VP.
in the states, I would be lucky to have more than 1 assistant handling my stuff and here I have 6. I won't be surprised that the local tycoons here even have a maid to wipe their asses for them after they take a dump.
I have seen even humble americans turn arrogant after 6 mths living in an environment like this. Power makes one arrogant almost always, it is hard to find a person with power with humility to all. Bush is no exception plus he's already arrogant and a spoilt brat to begin with, its no surprise he did what he did.
I wonder how the USA economy would take it if the national governments of places like Europe, Russia, Japan and China start selling their dollar reserves, or imposing import tarrifs on American goods. The USA may find that actually, it does need friends.
It'll just deflate the value of the dollar so much that developing countries will go bankrupt because their exports to industrialized nations will no longer be competitive since the dollar is so deflated that buying from the USA is cheaper than buying from developing nations?
The US still has a lot of bargaining power to act like a bully, so much more so that even if all its allies banded together and imposed sanctions on the USA, all they would end up accomplishing is destroying themselves economically as well.
only really for high end laptops though. for the low end, apple can't compete, the ibook is still more expensive in that range.

I think the Chinese and the Indians have a monopoly between them on this one.
The muslims are nowhere close to catching up to those 2 even when you take the chinese muslims (minority) and indian muslims into account.
So much for we are the great bastion of democratic society and all the other non-conformist governments are facist pigs.
I don't think that they even have this level of surveilance in the supposedly facist China today.
What's to stop these monitors from monitoring more than they said they are monitoring?
Its just a cost lowering way to ensure income to the government while reducing costs (ie you need to hire less police officers)

Whenever he arrived at a new place, instead of setting up colonies, he did a PR camp
lol... you know, sometimes I think autocratic societies have their usefulness... now someone go inform him that he needs to go to China!!
No point in paying millions in legal fees when the companies being sued can't even pay the settlement.
errrrrr. shouldn't it be Yoda instead of Yota?
for now until the company pays their hosting provider. Just tried to access their site and its currently /.'ed outta their bandwidth allocation =)
