  1. Not good at all on Hurricane Threatens Shuttle Program · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is a very serious problem. The damage would have to fairly severe I would imagine, however it does have the possibility of ending the shuttle program.

I was lucky enough to be able to speak with one of the people in the group commisioned to investigate the columbia accident. He told me that one of the reasons they were adamant about finding the trouble behind the accident and making sure it did not happen again (beyond the paramount fact of preventing the loss of human life) was because it was a solid fact based on budgeting that NASA could not continue its shuttle program if it lost one more orbiter. He was fairly confident in the fact if one more was lost it would end program for good.

I do find it amusing that unixbox is a filtered word.

Other then the tried and true practice of using toasted CDs as coasters, a friend of mine found old processors (of the socket 370 variety) made an excellent comb for his goatee.

At a computer place where I volunteer, they hand out old RAM chips cut in half as key chains. They slide the ring though the holes where the memory would click into place and slap a sticker with their name and phone number on the back. A big bowl of them sits on the front counter and the majority of people who come through take one.

  5. Where do your fingers go? on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 1

Where do those of you who are self-taught typists rest your fingers? I have never taken a typing course and can hit over 90 WPM with over 90% accuracy. My left hand rests on ASDF like normal, however my right hand is shifted over from the standard and rests on KL:"

I believe this came about from the extra keys on a keyboard like the pipe and backspace keys that I use frequently. I am curious what kind of other chagnes poeple have made from the standard 'touch typing' technique that is normally taught to new typists (ASDF for left and (I think) JKL: for the right). As far as I know this is the same technique that was used during the pre-PC, so its not surprising that new techniques are naturally forming.

I never took a typing course and my fingers do not rest on the standard keys as taught in said courses, however when I was tested for typing skills for a recent job, I scored slightly over 90 WPM with about 93% accuracy. All that is from using computers since I was old enough to read.

I wouldn't say typing is no longer a useful skill to have, but use a computer enough and you will develop your own typing style that is good enough for most jobs. (A good friend of mine uses the 'hunt and peck' method with his two index fingers, but after playing a text based MUD for about 5 years he can now hit over 50 WPM using only those two fingers)

  7. EBooks on Are PDAs Simply Finished? · · Score: 1

Reading ebooks is the most useful function I have found for my PDA. I have probably read 20+ books so far on my PDA while reading in bed and in various places. Its much more convienant to carry around a PDA which has a few books stored on it then the books themselves. Also it is much cheaper/free to download books off the internet from sites like project gutenburg. I wouldn't go out and buy a brand new $200+ PDA for this purpose, but an older model off Ebay is well worth the cost IMHO. I still highly prefer reading traditional books but in certain circumstances it comes in handy.

It's easy to see why they are failing however, other then that I would have no use for one. I got a hold of various software (engineering tools, chemistry tools, scientific calculator) which would all have come in handy for school but ended up just using my ti-89 like always. I also tried using it to keep track of my contacts and such but that quickly fell to the wayside as the notebooks I always carry around with me worked just as well.

  8. Re:Advice from someone like you on Uniquely Bright: Experiences and Tips? · · Score: 1

I am still in college and was very much like you describe yourself when I was in high school. I was told I was 'gifted' all throughout school, was told I had an IQ of 160+, skipped a grade and was given special treatment throughout my early school years. As a result, when I got to high school I did not feel the need to work hard at anything and my grades suffered. As a result I learned that the main advice everyone here seems to be says (i.e. you are not special, get over it) is true. I worked several jobs which did not require any special education, moved around alot and I met many people.

Many of these people considered themselves to be unique, intelligent and in possession some god given right to hold their heads higher then other people even when they were just mowing lawns or working tech support like thousands of other people. This attitude will prevent anyone from accomplishing anything meaningful in thier lives. This is the biggest lesson I have learned by not going straight into college. I believe had I done that, there is a possiblity I would have failed out. After working for a few years and 'seeing the world' I am truly motivated to learn and make myself a better person. Now I am a year away from graduation, taking a dual major with honors and I have 4.0 GPA. And no, it didn't come easy.

Believe it when we say forget all that preconcieved bs that you have been fed up until this point. The sooner you realize you are only gifted in the fact that you can make decisions for yourself (which puts you in with a majority of the rest of the population), then you can begin to work hard and accomplish whatever it is you set your mind to do.

  12. Re:bin laden.. on Saddam Hussein Arrested · · Score: 1

The War is illegal because it was never declared. The war is not illegal. The President no longer has to declare war to attack a sovereign state its called the war powers act which was passed in 1973. The war powers act has superceded the antiquated notion of 'declaring war'. It gives Congress the right to give the President (who I will also remind you is Commander-in-Chief), the right to use the military forces, which by law he commands, to invade and attack a foreign nation. The reason behind the war powers act was twofold. One, it declares our intent to use force without actually demanding action as the old way of declaring war did. The hope was that this would be enough to scare the foreign nation into backing down and give us what we want without the lose of lives. Two, it allows the use of force at anytime once Congress gives the President the right to use force. This allows for more tactical strategies to be used in a war. Instead of the country under attack being prepared and knowing more or less when the first strike will be coming (as in the old system), it gives us a much larger window to attack. Again, this gives us an upper hand, but also helps to minizmize the loss of lives. (Think Normandy beach.) In a legal sence, the United States of America has only been at war with Iraq one time 1991. Wrong again. The United States never declared war with Iraq in its entire history. In fact, the last time the United States declared war was World War II. The war powers act was used in the Vietnam war, the Korean war, and the Persian Gulf wars. As far as legality under our country's constitution, this war is just as legal as the rest of the wars in or history have been. Since then we've bombed a soverign state for shits and giggles, but haven't really declared war. I wouldn't really call it shits and giggles. The bottom line is, while no weapons of mass destruction were found in ready yo use form, the reasearch and facilities for making these weapons was obvious. Given time to continue these pursuits, Saddam would have unquestionably had weapons of mass destruction at his disposal. But he didn't have them now you say? Welcome to current foreign policy. The neew theme to our countries foreign policy is based as a direct result of Vietnam. We are no longer going to wait until a country develops its weapons and mechanics of war to a point where we can no longer stop them easily if they become a threat to us or our allies in surrounding nations. Again, you can rant and rave as much as you want about the motivation behind Bush's reason for invading, but the bottom line is, we are trying to stop a threat that could potentially cause the loss of lives equaling or exceeding that of Vietnam if let to grow and fester. Our new foreign policy now is to squelch these threats now before they become to big too handle.

  13. Another review on The Bug · · Score: 1

After just finishing this book, I must say I am somewhat disappointed. The settings are very drab and lack color and intensity. Which fits for the overall mood of the book, but makes for very boring and unimaginative imagery. There are also a few references to feminism, and its fairly wasy tosee the author shares the views. There is definatly some male bashing going on at times in the book. Almost every male character is portrayed as either lazy, a slob, angry or mean. Harry may be the only exception to this rule, but even he is portrayed slovenly. There is a general lack of emotions and feelings that permeate throughout all of the characters in the book. This also lends to the books overall dull, dispassionate style. For Ullman's first novel its not bad. She does do a good job of capturing some of the aspects of a programmers motivation. She is a very skilled writer and has an impressive command of the language. Sadly, the book lacks the prose of a more experienced fiction writer and tends to a drab, boring feel. Definatly not a must-read, wait for the paperback.
