Interestingly, I just fired up UT3 for the first time in a little while, and was startled by the lack of servers in my area. For instance, I think I only found one Vehicle CTF server, and it was full. And then I noticed that the servers that were missing were the Midway servers that have been online since I bought UT3. I live in Chicago, which also happens to be the home of Midway headquarters, so that may be why I'm used to seeing them, but I wonder if they've shuttered their servers or if it was just a temporary outage?
Less than 10 seconds is fast? I know I'm used to the responsiveness of an SLR, but IMO camera-phones are still worthless until they can at least match the start-up speed of a normal point and shoot.
While not blindingly fast, the iPhone starts up the camera mode in approximately the same amount of time as a lot of point and shoots. Maybe a bit longer, but it's certainly not 10 seconds. SLR is obviously in whole different category.
I don't know why you got downmodded for this... There's a lot of really cool music in early games, especially considering the hardware and software restrictions of early devices. Take the C64 SID chip for instance. Composers had to learn some pretty interesting techniques for making music in those days.
Am I the only one that's incredibly annoyed by the fact that people seem to have forgotten that CD's ARE DIGITAL?!?!? I know what they mean is digital distribution, but nobody says that. They say things like, "the Beatles are resisting going digital", or "The Beatles are finally going digital with Rock Band", or whatever...You can already listen to the Beatles in digital form. You've been able to listen to the Beatles in digital form for 30 years...
Refuting that wasn't really my point. I was pointing out that people like to act like Capitalism == GOOD and Socialism == BAD, whereas the truth of the matter is somewhat in the middle. The US isn't really a 100% capitalist society. We have a number of social institutions which benefit a large portion of the population: Social Security (even has social in the name!), Welfare, Medicare, Unemployment, Police, Fire, EMS, mandatory ER treatment. In a truly 100% capitalist market-driven society, all of these would be private for-profit institutions. We've decided as a society that certain things work better as government (social) programs. While some people (like our current administration in the US) like to see things in black and white, and use scary words like "socialist" when referring to those with a more liberal bent, the real world is much more nuanced.
Karl Marx actually proposed a way improved form of democracy where the workers united in neighborhood committees will decide their own neighborhood policies, their city, their state, their country and the world's policies, all through direct debate and vote, with EVERYBODY being part of the decision and policy elaboration process.
Shhhh!!! We're supposed to be deathly afraid of socialism!
I think a lot of these free and low-priced apps will eventually go up in price. With the exception of the ridiculously simple apps like all of the various flashlights, I have a feeling that companies are putting apps out for free to get a lot of great reviews, and then plan to eventually jack up the price. I have to admit, though, there are so many free apps out there, it's difficult to find a niche that is likely to have a reasonable pay-off. That's life, though, I guess.
It's not in their immediate financial interest to turn off the tap.
Nor is it their responsibility to make sure their customers spend their money wisely. And they can't just indiscriminately stop processing payments made to certain companies...they'd get sued.
I would love to use PlayOn. I've tried it, and I can't get my PS3 to see it, or any other Media Server on my computer or my wife's computer. And yes, I've turned off the firewall, made sure everything is on the same subnet, etc. I read somewhere that the PS3 won't find media servers unless it's getting a WiFi signal strength of 80% or higher, which I guess could be my problem, because I'm only getting around 60%. Seems like plenty of signal strength to stream video over an 802.11g network, but who knows. Anybody else had this problem?
Yeah, and then once the FCC has effectively made internet within the US a public resource, they can start censoring it with the same crazy arbitrary rules they use for broadcast TV. No thanks, I think I'd like to stick to the private model.
It's already running UNIX, it's just a matter of getting to that root prompt. And if you're willing to jailbreak the phone to install Linux on it, why aren't you willing to jailbreak the phone to install Darwin apps on it?
The BSD subsystem isn't installed on a stock iPhone. Installing it is a part of the jailbreak procedure.
Is it just me, or does the iPhone not do this anyway? It displays the regular webpage. Sure, there are some sites that detect the iPhone browser and deliver specially-formatted versions of their pages, but the iPhone isn't reformatting anything...
"can take any recorded sound as input and split it into a number of very short sound particles that can last for between 1 and 10 milliseconds."
Yeah, that's called granular synthesis, and it's been around for awhile. There are a number of free and inexpensive grain cloud generators available...I wrote one myself, actually (http://atomiccloud.gersic.com/).
Sigh...somebody said "all fruits are apples", and I said "look, I have an orange". I was just pointing out a fallacy in an argumant by showing the existance of a differing, and rather well known viewpoint. Whether you or I agree with it is immaterial.

Heh, Object Oriented Law Making (OOLM)
The laptops are still one-button...
It means Firewire and External SATA will still be faster, but everything will come with USB connections anyway for no apparent reason...
Okay, so I over-exaggerated...

Most people using IE don't know what a user-agent is...
Most of the things you mention are not Socialism, but instead are shared resources paid with property tax money, and administered by the county.
If it walks like a duck...
Socialism simply doesn't work. Here is why.

Actually, yeah. That happened to me at a pizza hut once. I think I was using a card I hadn't used in a long time, though.
1. they are profiting from a crime, and border line aiding and abetting.
Not until a court of law says it's a crime. Until then, they're a legitimate business.

yes, then we can pay more AND have an extra level of beaurocracy...where do I sign up?

How about any lawyer laughing you out of his office?
Lawyers only laugh you out of their office when you're not their employer...and they're not a part of your legal team.

what would have been "stunning" would have been if Stevens survived.
Well, I don't know about "stunning"... Is there anything left that our elected leaders can do that would really "stun" the American public?
