  1. Re:Vote or Die, P-Diddy on ESA Pushing for Gamers to Vote · · Score: 3, Interesting

I bet ya this will fail miserably just like the Vote or Die campaign aimed at youngsters.

Or backfire. The typical voting in gaming is whether or not to boot troublesome players out of the game whereas in politics you vote someone into office that (you think) would be better than (typically) the incumbent you want out.

Primetime TV game shows perpetuate this (voting someome off the show).

Coming soon to a TV near you
    Apple is in your den
Apple is in your living room

They should make it into an ad jingle. But to what melody? With a little jiggling around, how about Pink Floyd, "Brain Damage", Dark Side of the Moon?

the point is I only have 1 computer - a laptop I take with me to work and home every day. at home I have wireless keyboard, mouse, internet, speakers, [and] phone (sync + remote). why NOT have everything wireless if it can be? my laptop is only 3 feet from the monitor because it HAS to be to use the monitor.

So you just plonk it down on the desk and it knows to associate with the nearby peripherals? That reminds me of this bit from one of my favorite authors, Douglas Adams (RIP):

"How... does it work?" he said, trying to make it sound like a casual enquiry.

"Well, it's really terribly simple," said Reg, "it works any way you want it to. You see, the computer that runs it is a rather advanced one. In fact it is more powerful than the sum total of all the computers on this planet including - and this is the tricky part - including itself. Never really understood that bit myself, to be honest with you. But over ninety-five per cent of that power is used in simply understanding what it is you want it to do. I simply plonk my abacus down there and it understands the way I use it. I think I must have been brought up to use an abacus when I was a... well, a child, I suppose.

"Richard, for instance, would probably want to use his own personal computer. If you put it down there, where the abacus is the machine's computer would simple take charge of it and offer you lots of nice user-friendly time-travel applications complete with pull-down menus and desk accessories if you like. Except that you point to 1066 on the screen and you've got the Battle of Hastings going on outside your door, er, if that's the sort of thing you're interested in."
But of course there the logic is in the computer controlling the desk, not in the laptop.

It also reminds me of Apple's PowerBook Duo and its DuoDock.

And just because a DVD is widescreen doesn't mean it isn't also pan-and-scanned. For example, the movie Head Office was filmed at 2.35:1, but the DVD release was 1.78:1.

Why is it that they can only keep a recording history for 28 days?

Unfortunately, the only workaround for it is to keep the recording (or a partial of it) marked KUID. It's also useful for Wishlists that get certain false positives. For example, if you have a Title Wishlist for "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" but are looking for episodes of the two TV series (Briggs and Phelps, and the one with Cinnamon leading the team without them) and don't want the movies, keep some partial recordings of each movie marked Keep Until I Delete in your Now Playing. It won't pick them up again until you delete them manually.

A couple interrupted TiVoToGo/ComeBack transfers can aid in the making of small placeholder partials out of unwanted recordings, though they might not group together into a series folder anymore.

I'd like to tell my DVR to stop recording them as suggestions without lying to it that I hate it. I already have all the series and movies preloaded into my DVD changer (except TAS on preorder and one TNG disc that was missing from the package) in rough order. I'd rather the DVR use the free space for something new.

    What exactly does capitolized mean?

The unification of church and state I'd guess. Or it's part of the standard spelling troll to make one obvious error.

Using "then" instead of "than" is a very jarring mistake that no one with a primary school education should make. It also changes the meaning of the sentence.

Then it's a good thing he used the right one. (It could also be a dyslexic problem, as the typewritten-style "a" is almost schwa-like and could be misperceived as an "e".)

Not capitalising a proper noun is most likely either a typo or just simple laziness, and doesn't really change the meaning.

And there's some disagreement over whether "heaven" is a proper noun. I'd want to check my Scrabble(TM) dictionary to be sure (its rules exclude proper nouns).

As for the placement of the full stop, even if it should be within the quote marks, I'd personally put it outside simply because that makes far more sense in this context.

The rules about the placement of the full stop always use examples where someone is being quoted and attributed, and never seem to address the use of "scare quotes" where they're used more for emphasis than quotation.

And the trend is toward treating the full stop the same as when an exclamation or question mark is used (inside if the quote is an exclamation or question, outside if the sentence containing the quote is an exclamation or question). I note in passing that there's no similar full-stop exception for the usage of parentheses.

I find the best way to learn how to write properly is to read books. I learned more from good examples in books than I did from schools. I would not include newspapers nor websites as good examples. (You don't want to get me started on closed captions, and subtitles are only slightly better than captions.)

BTW, it is Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select (you have an extra Play there), and best done while playing a recording from Now Playing/Now Showing, not Live TV (to avoid tuning to channel 30).

The latest version of the software on Series2 units gives less audio feedback when entering the above code (no noises for the first two Selects, 3, or 0), and seems to have some other peculiar bugs. (I had part of the To Do List go inaccessible for awhile. I need to get a video hosted somewhere before I report it.)
