Whether this policy is good or not depends on the intent of the security policy. If the policy is meant to mitigate the accidental exposure of confidential information, the policy may a good one. I have found that no amout of education and/or training will prevent user stupidity. Most average users think that a specific situation will no happen to them. They will use programs, attachments, or files from any source that they think is trustworthy. I have found that unplugging USB ports from the motherboard as well as disabling them in BIOS and via the operating system is the most effective way of dealing with user stupidity. I also make sure CD-ROM drives are disabled as well. Only people who need to copy data and remove it from the building for legitimate purposes get access to these devices.
While this type of policy will go a long way to preventing accidental compromise of security (provided that network security is adaquate as well), it will do little to stop the deliberate theft of information. While many buildings are guarded and monitored at the main entrance, there are usually other doors that employees and visitors can use to leave the building. These doors can be held open or a small package hidden near this door can be picked up. I have even seen an instance where a wireless router was smuggled into a facility and was connnected to the network. Keylogger devices and camera phone are small and easily smuggled. Both can be used to purloin a lot of information. I have also seen a device that is small as a cigarette pack that can be plugged into the ethernet port on a computer. This kind of device can be used in a manner that will allow a person to store data on it by using ftp (Of course, a proper login setup will identify the fake network). Technology will do little to thwart a determined spy. Keeping employees happy will go a longer way to weeding out undesirables. A loyal employee happy to be at the company will report any suspicious activity.
I can understand how this Con artist got a good rating on Yahoo Shopping. Yahoo has been neglectful in removing spam artists even after many complaints. I personally classify Yahoo! as a spam and scam support service. Years ago, Yahoo joined with a company called S.B.C. (SouthWestern Bell Corporation). The company I worked for supplied call center services to S.B.C. S.B.C. is known for signing up its telephone subscribers for Internet without their knowlege or permission. It is also known for its deceptive billing practices. I would rate SBC Yahoo ethics the same if not worse than that of Sony.
The Wiki operator can disclose the IP address ofthe poster. Yes you can put up a system where anybody can enter anything they want. This has been done for hundreds of years. Have you ever heard of a public bulletin board? You see, it is called freedom of speech. If something is libelous trace the person who posted it, or change the data yourself. If you want to mandate that all Wiki posters should be id'ed and tracked, then you and others of like mind should get together and pay the Wiki operators whatever it would cost to satisfy your mandate and maybe the wiki operator will then require ID's from posters.
I find Wiki's a refreshing look at the world today that is different from all the B.S. that comes down from the corporate or government kommissars. Sure, there are a few bad apples, but this is nothing that cannot be remedied by people excercising their responsibilities. If you don't like something posted about you, then change it and complain to the wiki operator. If the Wiki operator continues to allow libelous posts he or she will lose credibility within the community and readers will eventually quit visiting.
I too have enjoyed Linux almost from the start. My first experience with Unix on my personal computer was with S.C.O. (Yuck! but I had to get away from Windows). When I found that I couln't write the first line of c code unless I purchased their expensive compiler, I made the switch. I first istalled Debian from a downloaded boot disk. After I played with it for a few weeks, I went to Slackware. At work, I get to use SuSE. My experience with Linux was frustrating, but enjoyable from the very beginning. Now that Linux has involved into a much better functioning operating syestem, I don't think I could ever go back to Microsoft Windows. I originally switched because i wanted to design cool features and software for myself and I was poor, so I could not afford the expensive compilers that were available for Windows or DOS. Just think, if Microsoft has offered more freedom and their products at an affordable price, Linux might have never gained as much ground as it has in these few short years.
I donate refurbished computers to different people who otherwise could not afford them. Of all distros of Linux, Slackware is the only one I can get to run on older computers without a lot of toil. I also use it on all of my computers with the exception of one, and on that one, I use a self-created distro. If you think i am partial to Slackware, that is because I am:-)

Take a gun, knife, or some other weapon and hide it on your person. Walk through Internet cafe, look at the screens and see if anyone is typing in a scam. If he or she is, wait until the person leaves, follow him/her out and use your weapon on them. A good Nigerian scammer is a dead one. I know that this is politically incorrect, but untoftunately, until your government takes action against scammers, this is most likely the only way
What is wrong with the fifteen yoears old kids in the forum? If they know what they are talking about, their age does not matter. I have helped and have been helped by many 15 years old kids. By the way, I'm 37.
As far as support goes, I guess that you haven't had to call Micro$oft regarding an installation issue. I could not find a telephone number on the Win2k package. I finally found a number in the accompanying booklet. After calling this number (toll call) and waiting about 15 minutes, the only thing I got was a prompt for my credit card number!!! Many distributions of Linux provide better support than that.
Linux handles just about all of the programs that I need in order to do business without all of the seecurity issues. The only program that does not work in WINSAP 2000, but that is because Florida Medicaid will not release the information in order to write a Linux version. As is the case with most U.S. State governments, Florida forces people to run Windows. I guess with wealth comes privileges.
If the individuals actually performing the work were getting paid a living wage, I would agree. However, I know of people who have seen the conditions imposed on these workers, and they are atrocious. I am not against the Chinese or any person of any country. What I am against is the Government-corporate-religious alliances that threaten to enslave us all.
I went through the Navy and received eduaction in electronics. When I went back to civilian life, I found that employers wanted a college degree. I went to college to get the degree. I only got credit in phys. ed and communications simply because the courses were designed a bit differently. After about 3 years and several thousands of dollars, I got my degree. I work for about a year in the electronic field before my job was shipped to China. Most electronics engineering jobs are now moved to overseas. This is happening to all kinds of professions. Why should people spend tens of thousand of dollars in order get the right paperwork for a career only to see that effort wasted when the next round of outsourcing comes about? I am seeing the same thing that happened to the electronics industry happen to the computer industry. I am just glad that I do not have to pay back a student loan. If the American government wants to increase graduation rates, then it would do something about the flood of slave-made goods and services crossing our borders. In fact, something will give due to the high number of dollars that America bleeds each year.
In America, a worker cannot support a house and pay living expenses on a dollar a day. How do we compete with slave labor except by becoming slaves ourselves. This is where America is headed no thanks to the U.S. government's refusal to do its job.
http://www.fija.org/ Take back the power usurped by corrupt judges.
http://www.lp.org/ Take back our freedoms that have been stolen by the goverment.

I have to say that I do not even like to hear the entertainment cartel's product, so I do not download "their music." With that said, the cartels ought to look at the practical implications of their price gouging. Many people with whom I talk online say that they would buy their music if it was priced around 20 or 30 cents for an unencumbered mp3. 20 to 30 cents a track is a lot better than 0 cents per track. Bandwidth and hosting is also way cheaper than CD's and CD presses + artwork, etc. The music industry really ought to consider this type of pricing, it will make them more money than gouging. Nowdays, people have a choice, and they are not choosing online stores or the traditional brick and mortar stores either. The music industry needs to attract people to "legitimate" downloads, and using a reasonable price is the best way to do it.
I would be more than happy to support this program if the average African person were the ones actually getting the equipment. Unfortunately, it will be stolen by government officials, or corrupt militias. Africa has receied hundred of billions in aid, and yet it remains the porest area in the world. Africa will become prosperous ONLY when the governments and corrupt militias are driven out of power.
Unfortunately, Africans get to see another hope vanish while American, Canadian, and European taxpayers get it in the rear once again.
I guess the Government of U.K. has to do something to make it look like they take spamming seriously. I wish the U.S. would pass a real law against spamming as well as enforce it.
Actually, Linux hardware support is better than that of Microsoft. Microsoft a low number of device drivers compared to Linux hackers. It is only because Microsoft is well connected to hardware vendors that vendors do free work for microsoft.
As far as Microsoft's installation technical support, it is virtually non-existant, so this blow a hole in Microsoft's statement about superior support.
I wonder what will happen when malware bot attempt to use the same mechanism that the AOL bots used to put themselves on people's buddy lists. I don't trust code that I cannot look at. I will stick to my modified Kopete.
It is amazing what a host can learn about people by having them use their instant messaging system. If I was a hosting provider, I would know my users' email addresses, when they were home (when they logged onto their machines), when they were at school (if IM used there) and all sorts of goodies. What a good way to push targetted advertisements. I bounce all of my IM traffic through one specific proxy.
I was wondering if the user was actually using the AIM Client or what. I personally use Kopete with a few lines of code added for my protection. I have yet to be SPIMMED by a bot.
IPv6 will allow FreeWan Cells to integrate nearly seemlessly with the conventional Internet. Imagine trying to assign IPv4 addresses to each of over 2 million FreeWan Cells that may be created in the near future. Yes, it can be done if people are willing to pay the exorbitant prices required for such address space. IPv6 would allow EACH COMPUTER in each individual Cell to have its own ip address (even if it is withing a hobbyist range). FreeWan may not be much now, but as the Internet is increasingly filtered, taxed, regulated, spammed, virused, and restricted by both governments and corporations, FreeWan will play a bigger part in information exchange. IPv6 will be better suited to support a worldwide network of FreeWan Cells. Yes, IPv4 can be used for a worldwide network of FreeWan cells, but computers within these cells would not be able to connect to both the Internet and FreeWan at the same time due to the lack of an adequate number of private IPv4 address assignments.
Is this something that can be bought by an average person and used to set up a FreeWan Cell, or is it just another product that is going to be dominated by some large company. If this is something that used by the average person to set up a network without having to pay a fee to some company, then it just may very well be one of the greatest innovations for amnkind. Imagine being able to transfer information at high speeds and low cost without some government or corporate Kommissar monitoring your every move. This would sound very nice to me.
This is when you need both a Winblows and Linux computer. You download the WMV file to the Linux computer and then copy the WMV file to the Winblows computer. After that is done, you play the file on the Winblows computer and pipe the video and audio into the input card on the Linux machine. After that is done, the content can be distributed in a format that doesn't force the use of Winblows computers.
I really don't care if it hits the mainstream. If it does, I won't make the easy money I now make by removing viruses, spyware, and other malware from Winblows machines. I tell people about Linux and even offer to come set it up free of charge. Most people do not want to expend a little effort to learn the OS. Linux will me mainstream ready when people produce Linux image disks for specific models of computers. If Novell (or Dell) produce SuSE for Dell Power Edge 600SE that ran seemlessly out of the box and offered this CD to anyone who purchases a Power Edge 600 SE, they would have a whole bunch more people willing to use Linux. Unfortunately, Microsoft has too big a hold on PC manufacturers for that to happen in the near future.
As far as the old stuff is concerned, it is still available. You can also use the hacker oriented distros such as Slackware, Debian, or even Gentoo. If you are still not satisfied, then make your own distro. Visit http://www.lfs.org/ to learn how.
Much of the telco infrastructure was paid for with taxpayer money. The telcos got the lines and do the maintaining. We get screwed. When the telcos remonopolized T-1 in our area, I was put out of business. The telco has lines going through my property (private property btw), yet I have yet to see a dime in compnsation. I say anything that is run over public property should belong to the public. If it weren't for these cartels making an exhorbitant profit, we could all have broadband for a reasonable price. But as long as the cartels control our government, this will never happen.
I don't need or desire this kind of "protection." I need protection from my governemnt because I want to live in freedom. Why should we put up with more intrusions into our lives when the government will not even take the steps in securing our borders. What is wrong with building refugee camps to keep those who do not have American citizenship but might pose a danger? Tell them to go to the camps or back to their country.
What good is it it strip search old American women at airports and repress us with rfid tags and so-called foolproof drivers licences when our borders are overrun with illegals? I have seen personally numerous times American people get secondary searches at airpot checkpoints while those of obvious Middle Eastern descent go right through. Enough with the propaganda about safety for Americans when the people who should be watched are free to roam without a second glance.
Also, the influx of slave-made goods is making us vulnerable to terrorism (ever hear of sabotage). Fix our borders, and put reasonable tariffs on foreign made goods, and we will be safe. Train the citizenry on what to look for, have massive civil defence and first aid courses for the common people. Keep an eye on Middle Eastern travelers. I look like I'm Middle Eastern (I am not, though), and I wouldn't mind the extra checks.
I for one will give out information anywhere I can on how to disable rfid chips. A magnifying glass can be used for other purposes than frying ants! By defacto rule, we already have lost a lot of our Constitutional rights. Hey Bush, don't just allow the big Cartels to do what they want, we still like freedom too!
People, it is time for not only a new President but also a renewed governemnt, we can do it. We need another "Boston Tea Party". Our political parties have abandoned us. That is what http://www.makelovenotspam.com/ was trying to do. It was trying to punish those who buy spamvertisement. I personally support Lycos in this effort. I also support http://www.friedspam.com/ and the creator of the Java program located at http://www.plaza1.net/SpamFryer.jar . If ISP's would do their job in reigning in zombie computers and such (simply by blocking port 25 access to the rest of the world by default). Users would not be forced to take drastic action.
Here is another tool. This tool is just a proof of concept. To C.M.A. I cannot recommend people actually doing this;-)
Download the java app (source is included in the jar file) http://www.plaza1.net/SpamFryer.jar When you are spammed, just paste the URL of the spamvertised site into the URL box, enter the desired number of visits, and click start.
I'm not actually advocating people actually do this;-) But if someone did, the spamvertised site will get visits (you don't even see the page). That is what the spammer want isn't it - visits?
I use a tool (written in Java) that I wrote. I tested it on my own webserver (not anyone elses). If you want to test your own webserver look at this one.
http://plaza1.net/SpamFryer.jar
you might have to right click this link and save it to desktop.

Here is another tool. This tool is just a proof of concept. To C.M.A. I cannot recommend people actually doing this ;-)
;-) But if someone did, the spamvertised site will get visits (you don't even see the page). That is what the spammer want isn't it - visits?
Download the java app (source is included in the jar file) http://www.plaza1.net/SpamFryer.jar
When you are spammed, just paste the URL of the spamvertised site into the URL box, enter the desired number of visits, and click start.
I'm not actually advocating people actually do this
I use a tool (written in Java) that I wrote. I tested it on my own webserver (not anyone elses). If you want to test your own webserver look at this one. http://plaza1.net/SpamFryer.jar you might have to right click this link and save it to desktop.
