  1. Financial Aid on Feds Propose National Database of College Students · · Score: 1

They already collect this data for most students, though the Financial Aid system.
While the current system only gathers data on middle class and poor students, it's not going to be a huge shift to collect data on the .001% of students that are independantly wealthy.

  2. Re:Blaim Feminism's double standard on Help Select Questions for Bush and Kerry · · Score: 1, Flamebait

I cannot believe someone actually modded this post up.

    1) Good feminists have abortions?! WTF is that supposed to mean? I mean, by this line of reasoning "Good men" should cut their balls off to avoid the inconvenience of impregnating anyone, and I certainly don't see you advocating that. Especially since congress has passed legislation to outlaw one of the safest forms of abortion, and for many women the procedure isn't even performed in their state, it's not an option available to even the most "good" of women.

    2) Desire not to work? Are you kidding me? I personally have to work harder at my job and at my schoolwork for anyone to take me seriously because of my gender, and I STILL get paid less. It's not a merit system that is enforcing that statistic, it's sexism. I don't want a family, I want a career, and I have to face every day the fact that my hard work will be marginalized because I don't have a penis like you do, and I'll get paid less for it. And it's certainly isn't because I don't want to work.

    3) Yes, I do agree that we shouldn't be encouraging more over population of the world, but if you were really concerned about this issue, you'd be much more worried about the Bush administration's funding cuts to Family Planning abroad to any organization that even mentions abortion as an option, regardless of the other services that they provide, instead of attacking women who have responsibly planned families they can support. (It takes two to tango, why aren't you going out and berating their men for forcing you to hire a temp?)

    4) You know, equal opportunity laws were enacted to protect women and minorities against those exact values. I guess it's good to know that I'm right when I feel like I'm getting hosed because of my gender.

    5) We spend TONS of money on this. Are you kidding me? You, as a small business owner have already bitched in this post about spending money on this topic.

    6) Women DO want equality. Heck yeah, I want to been seen as an equal in the workplace, and it's people like you that are holding us back. I don't think anyone would be opposed to men being offered the same right to a leave of absence for the birth of a child as women are afforded. But, as a small business owner, would you really be willing to shell out for paid paternity leave for all of those good young men you hired in place of women?

You are totally wrong. I understand your anxiety on this issue as the dude with the pocketbook, but if those are truly your beliefs, you are fretting about the wrong issues. Paternity leave? HA! Support abortion, support family planning abroad.

Condoms are only 80% effective at preventing pregnancy, which for my vagina, isn't anywhere NEAR good enough. Kids need WAY more knowledge than that, kids need to be told about more effective forms of contraception, ie, the Pill when they hit 8th grade.
I wish I had mod points right now to mod this question up.

I also want to add, you should be able to find an Apple laptop with firewire for I thought long and hard about getting a PDA before I picked up a laptop, and I have to say, having a full computer, even if it's just for taking notes, is totally worth it. That way, you really aren't limited in the types of programs you can run, and.....since this is for a college student, you can take advantage of the campus computing facilities much more easily (If something goes apeshit in the middle of class, you'll probably be more likely to get help with Windows/MacOS than PalmOS) and well....it's cool to just be able to plug in to the campus network if you need to (as opposed to having to go home and sync your Palm or something.)

  6. Get a lightly used/older laptop.... on Note Taking Devices for Students? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'd recommend getting a used but still in good shape laptop + new battery. Until fairly recently, I was using a 366mhz iBook (clamshell, baby!) for taking notes, and with a brand new battery I could make it through all my classes no problem. Shop around Craig's List, and since you're at a University, picking up a laptop on the cheap should be easy (my school surpluses them fairly routinely -- lately I've been seeing Lombards and Wallstreets -- and kids are always selling them towards the end of the quarter for extra cash) Set it up with a minimal OS installation, a text editor, and you should be good to go. I especially liked my old iBook, because it was really really energy efficient. As in, I could leave it sleeping for days and it would lose less than 1% of it's battery. (Unlike my powerbook, which slowly leaks power during sleep. Grr.)

Often, when I read anything on slashdot regarding relationships or just about women in general, I wonder how people around here get in relationships to begin with. What your significant other wants is what you are giving to your gaming friends instead: YOUR TIME. If you are having a difficult time just randomly spending time together, maybe you need to schedule and plan some dinner dates and some quality time together. If your S.O. wanted to be playing video games, they would be online with you and your buddies kicking your ass. You probably dug yourself into a deeper hole by trying to pass your S.O. off so cheaply - what a stunt like that says is "Look over here while I do something that is more important to me, and far more valuble than YOU." Good luck getting out of that one, I would have ditched you by now.
  8. Book club! Lit Class! on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1

This is probably too far down the chain to even get seen. Find the kid a book club, or get them into a discussion oriented class. The idea here is that: 1. the kid is intellectually stimulated, so s/he won't be bored out of their skull dealing with the usual things kids talk about 2. Since obviously the kid responds best to academic situations, this gives a chance for ideas to be accepted or shot down, and perhaps will lead to critical thinking about why - it's a good mimic for social interactions, while using a subject matter that the kid can dominate and really be engaged with. 3. Maybe someone can be even around to moderate, so that no one gets too offended or upset. Sports? Yeah, right. I think the key here is to provide a medium for testing out social theories in an enviroment that isn't 100% unknown and threatening, which if there is good book chosen, can easily be provided. Odds are, on a sports team, the kid would be totally lost. Not having coordination physically or socially would be death.

The impression that I get from my friends that are in the CS department is that yes, they do force you to slog through a bunch of coding classes, but you really need to develop those tools to do the cool and interesting things you probably want to do with computers. (Plus, if you stick with it, a CS degree from UW is one of the better ones.)

Now, since you're at a pretty big school, if you really don't feel like sticking with it, there are other options that might be closer to what you want to do.

In particular, check out the Applied Computational Mathematical Sciences Department and the ridiculously competative Information School.

That is all I have to say - GET A LAPTOP. I made the mistake of getting a desktop as my school computer, thinking that a laptop would be too limiting....and I have found the desktop to be much to limiting for my needs. Desktops are great when you are living on campus, but in my second year I found that portability is such a huge issue. You just don't know when things are going to get too loud at your house, or when your internet is going to go out, or any number of disasters will make you wish you could pick up your giant tower and run to a new location.... And especially now that you can get a laptop that can do everything a desktop can for nearly the same price, there is no reason NOT to do it. I got lucky, and was presented with an opporunity to get a clamshell ibook for cheap this year. I take it literally EVERYWHERE with me, and I would throw my tower out a window if it didn't have my CD-Burner and DVD player in it. I'm going to upgrade this summer to something that will replace both computers, and I am never looking back. Plus, being able to type notes is great, especially if you have the worst handwriting ever, like I do....and wireless internet is all over my campus, which means not waiting in lines in those pesky computer labs if I have to check my email during the day.... Yeah. Buy a laptop. And don't buy a printer. They aren't worth the upkeep when you can go and print for pennies a page, and not have to deal with the space eater, and the ridiculously expensive ink...
