Actually it kind of has to.

The only reason our CO emissions are a problem is that we are digging up carbon that has been buried for years, and releasing it into the air.

Any form of renewable gas (ethonal, weird bacteria, etc) have to get the carbon from SOMEWHERE. In the case of plant based sources it gets it from the air the plants breath and store in the sugar. I would assume that the bacteria are getting it from the same place. Either from the sugar they are fed so they can produce this stuff, or from the air.

The real question is what are they feeding the bacteria. The energy has to come from somewhere, nothing is free.

You are correct. You only need to supply the source if someone asks for it. But it needs to be easy for them to get to, and in a format they prefer (IE you can't mail them a print out, or run an obfuscator over it first). However, once you have given them the source they are free to do anything they want with it, including posting it unmodified anywhere they want. As a result people generally host the source the same place as the binary, ecause it gets fewer complaints and you don't have to have someone shipping CD's or emailing or whatever.

Thats actually just fine under the GPL, but when you hand that executable to someone else, thats when the GPL is invoked. If you grab some code change it and just use it for yourself you do not need to do anything, but when you distibute it, by putting it on phones you sell, or putting the binary up for download somewhere you must also include the source.

I am not sure why Sony gets all this bad publicity in the MMO area. Face it SWG sucked before NGE, NGE made it actually FUN for some people. Vanguard is a mess, but it would not exist without Sony, you have Brad to lay that failure at. In fact to me it seems like going with Sony is a great idea. The people in Sony Online Entertainment are not the same people who put root kits on CD's they probably have never even met; nor are they the people who made the PS3, in fact I bet they have not talked a whole heck of a lot either. Sony is a REALLY HUGE company, you shouldn't blanket all of them under one roof.

As the FA says there is a lot of nasty things involved in setting up a MMOG; billing, bandwidth, and backed hosting. Say what you will about SOE but there servers are MUCH better than anyones (yes they had problems in the early years of EQ, but I have _NEVER_ had to wait in a queue with them; and unscheduled crashes have been very very rare for years). Why should content creators have to spend time worrying about if they have a redundant enough T3? I would rather they spend time making a good game.

Some people like this kind of game, but obviously not enough of them, or SOE would not have tried NGE.

Patenting y=mx+b as a method of drawing a line is wrong. Patenting a device that uses this to draw a line, that is different. Algorithms that describe basic ways of doing things are not novel. The biggest difference though is that with a device, if someone discovers some neat effect they can patent a certain way of doing it, but others can come an innovate on that device, inventing something that has the same effect but does it differently and is therefore not covered under the original patent. In software they are patenting the effect, here we have a mutli-way linked linked list, something that CS students have to do in freshman level classes. But now, we can't use it in any way without having to worry about defending ourselves. As someone who writes software for a living I would rather give up on ever getting a patent than having to worry for the rest of my life about implementing something someone else came up with and patented.

The there is the issue that computer science moves along at such a clip that one company having a monopoly on an idea for the standard patent term could seriously stifle innovation in the field, which is directly against what the entire point of patents are.
