  1. Re:Interesting decisions... on How the Wii Was Born · · Score: 2, Interesting

Then again, developers may be happy that they don't have to spend upwards of $50 million just to get a game out the door because Nintendo is forcing them to make sure it works in SD, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and maybe 1080p. Part of Nintendo's strategy is to reduce the amount of money it takes to make new games by reducing the importance of the high-cost items (CPU, GPU, HDD). And from what I hear, the DevKit is very similar to the GCN, since the architecture is merely an upgrade, as opposed to a total overhaul, so developers should be familiar with developing on it. I have extremely high hopes for what Capcom will do with the new Resident Evil game.

And the CPU is technically better. It's (supposedly) 1.5x more powerful than the GCN processor, and some degree better than the original Xbox.

I'm by far no expert, but I believe the reason people say it's better to unplug everything is the miniscule power drain from being plugged in. It won't cost you more than a few dollars a year. But when the entire world is leaving devices plugged in, it ends up being a huge amount of power devoted to doing nothing.

AM2 is, I believe, the socket type. You know, instead of A,754,939,LGA775 (Intel).
x.xGHz+ is something you made up. They had xx00+, which was used for marketing so people knew what it compared to in an Intel processor, since their processors ran at lower clockspeeds than the Intel competition.

$60 isn't that much more, compared to $50 for a single game. I've paid (probably my parents, rather) up to $70 for SNES and N64 games in the past. But $60 for all games is signifying a large push towards higher prices in general. But when you start buying multiple games at that price, it really adds up.

And anyone who buys Gran Turismo HD at $60, then buys cars and tracks is a fool, plain and simple.

But for each console a store sells, they'll likely restock that console, and we'll be back at square one, with the store losing out on its predicted sale.

I concur. I've been running various distros for some time now, but I always come back to Gentoo. My MythTV/web/file server has been running it for somewhere between 3 and 4 years now, and never once have I had a major complication with the OS (MythTV hosing all of my recordings and me deleting the database like an idiot are not related to Gentoo). I've even switched the actual hardware it's running on, booted into a generic kernel, and everything worked fine.

Sure, it may take a little bit of time to get it up and running, but it's a learning process. And I usually don't have to deal with the dependency hell that some distros bring to the table when I try to upgrade a package that has a dependency version that is no longer in the tree.
