In reality this concept is not new. It has been happening in the "tech" industry for the last 50+ years. The harsh reality of life is that the half life of your technical education is 5 years. Now for those of you who will argue that work experience counts, I have found that, at best it is 10% for the first 3 years then decays by about 2% for every year after that until you hit 1%. Now the bad news is that 75% of the tech folks don't realize this until about the 10 year point in their career. By then it is tough to go back to school in their original career path. So where do they go? Management, tech support, quality assurance, or more often than not that cubicle in the corner where they get dragged out only to attend meetings with their cronies who took the management path. So all I can say for all of you hot shit I am going to change the world young techies...... If you play your cards right you too will end up with your own cubicle in the corner eventually as well.

In reality this is a great idea. Having developed software destined for UAV's I am more than happy to use Open Source applications rather than proprietary solutions. The biggest advantage is the "many eyes" approach to software development. When you develop any flight software you spend many hours pouring through code looking for the hidden bug. Economics say that you can't put the same number of eyes looking at a proprietary solution. Besides, who do you think is less reputable a manager of a private contractor who gets the bonus for delivering early and under budget or a government civil servant who is asked to work overtime to oversee the development effort. Personally, I'd trust the Open Source community because they have a natural distain of poorly written applications.
Is it the users fault that Ceasers was totally clueless when it comes to the subject of software validation testing. It was not the users fault that the software developer was a bunch of complete morons. This generates a dangerous precedent. It means that I can be sued for using a Microsoft product that has a known vulnerability even if the organization that I work for supplied the product. Either Cesars needs to step up and admit that they paid for crap software or the company that developed it needs to admit that they produced a piece of shit. This was yesterday's news. Reality is that IBM was "considering" this move. At Friday's hearing the judge told the Attorneys for SCO to "get fucked" when it came to requesting more information and wanting to Disposition 25 additional people. SCO got 10 more people but so did IBM. Reality is that this doesn't do jack for SCO since they weren't given any more time to talk to these guys. It's a wash though since IBM gets to talk 10 more SCO folks. Given the attrition at SCO this means that IBM get to talk to the security guards, janitors and gardners. The judge did all of this then hinted to IBM that this was her decision regardless of IF they decided to drop their patent claims. I think we are about to see SCO go into porn mode where they get screwed by multiple parties at the same time. This should be good fun.

Another group of undocumented FEATURES crap that doesn't do anything to enhance the product and the the inevtiable cross platform issues related to transferring documents between PC's and Macs. Gee... Somebody at Microstuff FINALLY downloaded a copy of Open Office and figured out that that their "low budget" competition actually implemented useful tools instead of the typical Microstuff "features".
Why is this so shocking to anybody? All you have to do is to generate a Powerpunt presentation using a MAC then transfer it to a PC. At BEST you end up with a presentation with MANY misinterpreted fonts and symbols. I routinely resort to opening "broken" powerpunt presentations in Open Office then resave them as powerpunt to recover them. I have found that if I stay on the same computer and operating system (ie winders) then Symbols and Fonts problems become almost nonexistent.
What would you get if Maureen and Daniel managed to shut up long enough to reproduce......

The Open Source Community (and the rest of us cynics) need to encourage Apple (and others) to embrace Open Source.
