You just gave me yet another reason to buy a Mac. I am increasing my mindshare of the mac world and in the process my mindshare of the Windows world is going down. Except for the one or two games I play that cant be had on the the Mac and the fact that they now have a hardware platform with some legs I dont much see a reason to keep a PC around.
I did some semi serious shopping 2 weekends ago, and now this weekend I think I'll go back and really take a look at a G5. I cant believe I'm saying that. I sold my G4 as slow and crappy some years back, but the stuff I wanna do on computers has changed. Games are less important now.
And dont tell me your mom has some weird prog that macs dont have. That may be a valid excuse for you, but not your mother. She will have a lot less trouble with adware, malware, spyware and the like if you PITCH that PC and get her a nice G4 Imac. She'll love ya.

Why would not IBM simply use it's POWER 5? Any of the POWER chips blows the G5 away. The PPC 970 is a simple subset of the POWER 4 with a vector unit grafted on.
I keep wondering if IBM is going let Apple have the real cream or are they just going to allow them to have subsets of IBM's best chips?
Since Microsoft was clearly caught napping with ITMS who cares to bet how long it will be before MS puts a integrated store into the WMP? My guess is they will throw wads of cash at the labels to grab the rights and then put out "optimized Windows Media Player 9" WMA files that wont work on anything else. Either way, the Itunes for Windows + ITMS is a rare win for Apple, and Microsoft knows it.
What made the iPod a big hit was it's Firewire interface. Before the iPod, every MP3 player in the world used slow crappy USB 1.1 to transfer and download. Ipod made this so much faster that juggling your songs was no longer a sit and wait deal.
IMO most of the "magic" is that Apple knows how to write great software that almost anyone can use without RTFM and yet does not hold the user back from achieving the best sort of results becuase it is easy to use.
The deals made it possible, but thats not the reason.
at the Itunes music store for Windows! Apple's invited the press to a "Music Event" and it's widely believed the ITMS for Windows will launch then. Less sure is whether or not a new version of Itunes will arrive.
I work as a bench tech for a manufacturer of computers for mobile applications. The big boss ( A.K.A. Owner ) is a mechanical engineer by trade who got lucky years ago with a contract and has fooled around ever since with his company, sometimes making a profit but most of the time losing money.
I met a person outside the company at a hamfest who had done some consulting work for the big boss and told me a nifty quote that the boss had told him. The quote was: " Anybody I employ either doesnt have the credentals or the skill to get the better job, so I dont listen to anything they say". I shrugged it off as hearsay.
We were having a process problem with our automated soldering machine turing out cold joints, chips with the legs not soldered, etc. The boss was informed of this and instead of listening to the poeple he pays good money to he brought in outside consultants to make recommendations. So knowing what the guy told me, I knew what he had said was true. This really was what the Owner thought of his employees, and I guess what he still thinks of them.
So basic attitude towards the poeple you hire counts for a lot in my book, even more than knowledge. Poeple will work their ass off for a company that treats them fair and square.....but most business owners are more like my example I fear.
These poeple *should* have doting secretarys and support staff that will do these sort of thing for them. The higher up you go, the less you should concern yourself with that sort of thing - even the CTO at a company not concerned with making a computer or hi tech product directly would be better serving the company by concentrating on future projections of where the tech will go and how to make that pay off for the company.
It's strategy and solid business plannning along with executing that strategy that the big boys need to be concerned with....not figuring out how to open a Excel spreadsheet.

This is clearly one of the things that the public desires of government to do. I have asked friends of every political background from left to hard right what they think of the DNC list. Every single one of them was for it and signed up their numbers. If they didnt want this, no one would have bothered registering their numbers. Last count was 54 million that did. Thats 54 million households that say ME LIKE THIS. Lets find out over time if it works or not. Some government programs actually work.
Well, the G5 has certanly stirred the pot. First all the anti mac crowd say it's not as fast as Apple said it was and that Apple used cooked Spec_2000 benches. Then PC Magazine comes along and says that it's faster or as fast as anything available on X86. Now this. I dont think anyone expected this cluster to place second in the world - further proof that the G5 has what it takes.
I kinda almost feel sad for the appple bashers. One by one they are losing all their tired outdated reasons to bash Macs. About all they can come up with now are lame troll posts.

The US is fast becoming a police state. 9-11 accelerated the process by about 15 years, by allowing many freedoms to be quashed in the name of the War on Terrorism. The real tests will come when the coming economic meltdown occurs when countries around thw world stop using dollars to pay their debts and use euros instead. We wont be able to borrow the 1.5 trillion dollars a day to keep our economy going anymore.

There is no credible movement to preserve and protect individual freedoms. At least none with any power to actually effect change. Yes, this includes the US Libertarian Party, which is so broke most of their headquarters staff are working for free becuase they cant afford to pay them a salary.

It's not Apples problem. They could'nt get the music bigwigs to commit to locking in the revenue percentages that everyone gets at the PC level, meaning the music guys didnt want to get locked in at 90% desktop share that PC's have in one fell swoop. The only reason Apple got the ITMS off the ground was that by making it Mac only, everybody got to see how the concept worked - and they didnt risk much with Apples 4% market share. If the powers that be had let Apple go with everything at once, they would have undervalued their cut, and Apple would have had a much bigger windfall than they are going to get.
It was a good move on the part of the music gang.
Who the hell are they going to sell Lindows to? Most white boxen builders go after school systems and local government contracts these days to stay alive. I dont see a big upswing in the Lindows adoptation among these customer bases.

Lindows is like Oxygen. You get too much, you get too high. Not enough, and you're gonna die. Lindows gets you high. :)
