Paranoia always seemed to me to be the perfect one shot adventure game. With the mortality rate what it was you had a hard time having clones left by the end of the adventure, let alone for more than one. I've always wondered if there was a way to make campaign play possible, or if that was even desirable.

Good to see it coming back, though, as that will mean we should see more games happening at conventions!

Why does Flynt criticize Ellison, and then criticize a reader who wants to boycott Ellison.

Flynt criticizes Ellison because he thinks his actions are wrongheaded and counterproductive based on a misconception of supposed lost sales. However, he also points out that Ellison has the right to pursue the actions that he is.

Flynt criticizes the reader because he is trying to punish Ellison for performing these actions when 1) Ellison is already punishing himself by doing it, 2) The reader is punishing himself if he likes Ellison's work but is forcing himself not to for political reasons, and 3) the idea that this would cause Ellison to change his mind is silly (particularly if you know anything about him).

My girlfriend won't read David Brin because he was rude to her once. I don't agree with everything David Brin says or writes, but I read it because it is well written, thought provoking, and mostly because I like it. I think she is punishing herself by not reading it, but oh, well.

If I find that Ellison collection I may buy it, because it will be a good addition to my library, and Ellison deserves to be compensated for writing his stuff (and the publisher for publishing it, considering how few publishers do). This won't mean that I agree with his actions (I really don't agree with anyone who invokes DMCA, it is such a flawed law), but that I find his work interesting to read.

If you don't like an author, don't buy their work. If you do, be self serving, buy it. That way they can publish more of it.

  5. Brin's Views on David Brin on Privacy · · Score: 2, Insightful

From what I have read of Brin, his problem with privacy advocates is that they are uncompromising. He believes that we need to bargain on privacy. If we can get the same information about the government and corporations as they get about us, then the bargain is even, and we have a better restraint on their extremes.

Enron had plenty of privacy, even from those who owned part of it.

I personally think Brin has some wrongheaded ideas, but that he brings up points that others aren't really talking about. Sure, let's force the openness from the government first, but if everyone can do everything in secret than we must suspect everyone. That is not a healthy way to live.

  6. Re:Thanks on Ask Tick Creator Ben Edlund · · Score: 1

I think that is just something from the Cartoon Series. The comic book Arthur is a little more serious, and spends a lot of time trying to get the Tick to face economic realities (particularly since they are generally his economics getting spent).

  7. Re:The Tick's Language on Ask Tick Creator Ben Edlund · · Score: 1

Can you give me any example in the comic where the Tick is profane in some way? I've got them all, (pretty much) and don't recall any instance. I'm much more familiar with the comic, than the cartoon in any case. I could imagine him getting overly graphic in an attempt to make a metaphor, but it would be more like "Dig into the underbelly of Evil, until we find the small instestines." I agree that they can be edgier than the cartoon series, but playing up his sexual innocence while using sexual language doesn't work or fit. Once again, I am only talking about the Tick, other characters can be different. (I didn't mind them using a 90 pound weakling Arthur instead of a 230 pound weakling Arthur, the manner is the important part.)

  8. Re:Origins of "Spoooon!" on Ask Tick Creator Ben Edlund · · Score: 2, Informative

You should read the original comic books (by Ben Edlund). He does come up with it sitting around the dinner table with Arthur. He just thinks it is a neat word and would make a great battle cry.

The comic also contains the immortal line "Arthur, what this feast needs is Pez".

  9. The Tick's Language on Ask Tick Creator Ben Edlund · · Score: 5, Interesting

While I'm a big fan of the Tick and enjoyed the show last night, I found one thing discordant while watching it. The Tick using words like bitch, and gonads. He has always struck me as having very anachronistic language. Stuck back in the Father Knows Best days. Spreading his brand of creamy justice on the toast of the city, sure. Make Evil my Bitch, doesn't work for him. Borderline profanity might work for some of the other characters, particularly Bat Manuel, but it seems wrong for the well intentioned, but naive hero that is the Tick. Is this a direction they are trying to take the Tick for some reason, or just a matter of unfamiliarity with the characters that will be ironed out over time?

The headline is fine, but the text made it seem a lot less important than it is.

Quick synopsis for people: Observation and models had shown that there is an equal chance for matter and anti-matter to be created from energy. The question therefore was why is the universe composed almost exclusively of matter, and not anti-matter? This experiment shows that for the particle studied, there was a measurable difference in the decay rate of anti-matter versus matter. So some matter would stick around longer than the equivalent anti-matter, and multiplied by the nigh-infinite amounts we are dealing with, creates the universe we are in. (The rest gets converted back to energy which will split up into matter and anti-matter again, and continue the process of creating just a bit more matter)

OK, a couple of things here. #1) Evolution is science, creationism isn't. Evolution is about as well proven as the Earth being round (though the exact form of evolution is still being debated) and I don't think we should give equal time to the flat earth society either. Creationism can be taught in comparative religions, or other such classes, it needn't be in science class. #2) Hippocrates is the greek doctor, for whom the Hippocratic oath is named. I doubt many liberals would mind being called Hippocrates. And I think that most liberals would much rather Limbaugh went off the air for lack of ratings than by federal action. Note that the ACLU goes to bat for Nazis, not exactly the most liberal defendants for such a supposably liberal organization. I personally agree that bibles should be available in school libraries, they are tremendously useful in analyzing literature for one thing. Put it under Religion and Mythology, and let each individual decide what a book falls under. It shouldn't be treated differently than any other book, though, and it could be subject to removal if space is tight. (After all it is the easiest book in the US to get a hold of, they are given out for free by many, and there are buildings that contain many of them in pretty much every neighborhood.) But let us agree that the right of free speech is the most fundamental right in the constitution, and needs to be protected zealously.

When I posted my information to a few job sites I got plenty of responses, mostly from tech recruiters. I got a few interviews, but no jobs that I wanted to take, was qualified to take, and was willing to take me. I did have some strict criteria, and I do feel that if I was fired tommorrow I would have a decent job within a month or so.

On the other side of coin, we have tried to hire people to help out here, but I'm not sure that we are ever going to be able to find someone with the right skills, in the right price range, willing to become part of such a small company.

There seem to be a lot of resumes and job offers flinging all around these days, but few of them latching on to one another. Employers want everything but the kitchen sink, but this is just to make up for the fact that they may jump ship by the time they've been trained.

All the same, an exciting time to be in this business.

But, Linux is still free. It has been built on good foundations, and programmers at companies are being paid money to work on it. So maybe Linux will become more of a consortium of corporations and a few stellar individuals. At the very least it raises the standards of what an operating system can be. So what if it is Adaptec that starts writing device drivers instead of Pete in Vancouver? The point is that the good stuff gets absorbed and the bad stuff gets criticized and improved on. It's the product that is important, not the motivations.

It is important to realize that we did not evolve from chimps, we just share a common ancestor with them. Humans evolved for a different habitat than others of the ape branch. Eventually, of course, we no longer needed to evolve for habitats, but could alter our circumstances to fit them. And the reason our direct ancestors aren't around is that we competed with them for the same territories (which is kind of what natural selection is about anyways.) and won. The other surviving species did the same things.
