    Kanji pad does a pretty good job, you draw the character with your mouse and it does a good job of guessing the correct kanji (Japanese character) so something based on the logic behind that would probably work OK. Kanjipad itself is still too slow as you draw the character and then choose it on the left and it pastes it into another window, I'd prefer to be able to write sentences and paragraphs.

    You're right, of course they already can and do
    download software off the net to do that for them.
    "divx" copies of asian stuff is already passed around a lot on the internet and is often made into a vcd.

    While I agree with your basic concept, I must say that yes more people are dying. Why? Because there are more people. As the population increases that means that more people (not % just number) have to die.

    Nice post, I'd mod you up if I had the points.

    There is one small correction though. Katakana are not only used for foreign words but also emphasis kinda like italics. I confirmed this with my teacher who remembers the war and the changes in the language sense.

    This sounds just like what happened with Slackware
    except people didn't complain about it. Slackware users
    begged to give money and a way became available, they are a for profit company, did Slashdot complain? No they helped (thank goodness).
    I guess it's just the usuall inconsistant behavior we've
    all come to expect.

    There have been several ancient cultures in the solar system. I've personally heard of numerous ones a couple examples are Egyptians and Babylonians. We have insufficient evidence for
    ancient cultures on other planets if you believe it's absolute fact you probably also believe in Xenu. Don't get me wrong I'd rather like to hear of our discovery of extraterrestrial cultures (other than ones we may make in the future ;) and I believe they might even exist but we sure haven't got sufficent evidence to support such claims as of yet.
