you will (maybe) find a file corresponding to your settings, in the xml or "plist" format. For the latter there is an Apple plist editor.

At purchase, you get Mac OS X Server on each node. BUT, if you want to upgrade, you *must* buy an OS license for each node. There is an OS upgrade option that will get you free upgrades for three years, for a fee.

Many people think incorrectly that you can buy only one copy of the OS and then load it on each and every node. The confusion may come from the fact that there is an unlimited amount of clients allowed with the full-price Mac OS X Server. However, a new Xserve node is not another client!

  6. Re:Steve Jobs as CEO can redefine "necessary" on Pixar Switches to Mac OS X and G5s · · Score: 1

I think your argument doesn't quite fly. Its flaw is the notion that Apple makes most money from software and not hardware. The opposite is true.

If people buy Apple hardware to run Linux on it, that's no threat to Apple, as long as they sell that hardware. Indeed, for some times now Terrasoft has been selling Xserves pre-loaded with Linux with Apple's blessings.

The iApps are just there to entice people to buy hardware. Their modest -- and very reasonable -- price is aimed at recovering some costs. Plus, they could be ported to Linux if necessary, as iTunes has been ported to Windows -- to increase sales of iPod hardware.

So, as you seem to imply, Linux isn't going to shift the balance in favour of PC hardware. One reason for that may be that running Linux on an Apple is the ultimate sign of rebellion. But that's just fine with Apple. Plus, they are going to gain new market share by allowing all possible applications running on Linux to run on a Mac too. Either with Linux, or with X11 and/or KDE running on OS X. Therefore Apple has no reason to be against Linux and Open Source.

As far as I understand, you bought an Xserve, and with expanded memory and hard disk space, without knowing if your software would run on it. A bit risky perhaps. Maybe next time you could test your software on a cheaper machine. Most if not all Macs will run the same Mac OS server software as the Xserve.

I am also interested in buying an Xserve cluster, but I am trying out the cluster management software and the applications on a cheaper "cluster" made of my old G4 and my wife's iMac, before I commit any real money.

Moreover, for most Linux users would be even cheaper to go and use the Windows OS that came installed on their machines of choice. At least they would save time. Indeed, at least here in Europe, sleek-packaged Linux distros sold in stores are quite popular. Each box costs a good third or even half of the corresponding Mac or Windows OS box.
