A few months ago 2600 magazine had a arial photo of manhattan, with wifi points they found drawn over it. The stronger the signal was, the larger the circle identifiying it was. Cool shot.
I've got a 4 year old. If a kid never gets sick, the first germ that comes along is gonna give a super big whomping to em.
These worms that come and go, viruses and such, all really serve to harden the internet overall.
Just think if we had no worms, not viruses or anything. Then someone unleashed something that took advantage or all the holes and vulnerabilities over the past five years... If it went off in one big boom, we may have an interruption of service...
I'd have to agree on this one... I worked on a program that handled programmable detonators for rocket launches (big ones)... I was very very uncomfortable until I found out the code was only going to be used on a bench. If I was on a project that was used live I would have unit tests for the unit tests that test the units.
The merely is not including the time-money-quality triangle. You can't have all three most of the time. I can only imagine how this can be in a defense company that probably bid as low as possible, with a horrid time frame.
So once again, I blame management. Personally I have never had a project that said, sure take the time you need to do it right, let us know if you need any more money in the budget... Tools? Sure, just call up and order whatever you need...
Okay I have two big big concerns with these aliens!
#1: They are all clearly terrorists and we need to be protected from them.
#2: I don't want whats left of the programming work to be shipped off planet to mars, where some green looking dude will be writing web apps, while I end up flipping burgers or doing tech support (at least with the burgers I could scarf free fries)
Come on, this is the EFF. You should go out and take a look at what they have done to date to protect your online rights...
Here is what they are doing right now: http://www.eff.org/Legal/active_legal.html My suggestion for all is to follow the links on the EFF site to write to your congressperson and possibly make a donation to the EFF...
In another recent experiment that has been going on for decades, companys have taken human beings and placed them in small boxes which surround and cramp them on three sides, while leaving one side and the top open for observation.
No final results have been released, but it seems that they only surf the internet, make personal phone calls and perform friviolus actions of e-mails.
Making the boxes smaller seem to have no effect on the overall productivity of the cubical dwelling humans.
This is a bad idea. Unless he has lots of extra money to spend on his defense.
Point in case: In my earlier years my wife did something bad and bought a magic cable box that gave me all the channels I could want. This was wrong and illegal. She had it shipped to her parents house so I would not know it.
Now here is where it gets scary. The cable company in the area threatend to sue the manufacturer of the cable box and they turned over a list of names.
So now the cable company names everyone on the list for thier lawsuit. They then send out a mailer to everyone saying they will be removed from the list if they send $2000.
Okay, so I talked to a lawyer and I was told that I should just pay the $2000. Even if my father in law did not have a cable box, he would be named publically on a lawsuit and also have to cover his own legal expenses.
I did just go ahead and pay it. My point is not that I should be allowed to have a cable box, but that a company can just list you on a lawsuit and extort money from you.
If your friend has a brittany spears text file and they decide he should be on the list he could end up going thru a lot for nothing. Maybe there is a counter suit in there, but by naming it that, they could be justified (I am not a lawyer thou)
Apparently this is the last in an attempt to free themselves from human tyranny:

heh, if thats the case they can forget the reward...
All we need to do is stage a greatful dead tribute show and its bound to show up in the parking lot in a van somewhere...
It could be for two reasons. I remember reading that Linus refused to sign an NDA to look at the code. Recently there was that german guy who they forgot to have sign the NDA and blabbed about the contents of the code. That could have been enough for Linus to know what parts they are talking about.
Just a thought.
I checked quickly and saw that there was no mention that this represented one box running continuously. What's to say that they don't have mirrored systems? Maybe they have two boxes in tandem... Patch one up, transfer the system over and bring down the other one for overhaul.
It could go either way. Right now, and for the past years, the MS marketing machine has been out kicking ass. When Novell was sitting around advertising and sucking up to the people that already loved them, MS was right there too.
I think that yes, maybe in 10-15 years microsoft could be down, but they have that much time to change it also. If they start turning out some solid code and services they are going to be here. If not, slowly as technies replaced old failing exec's they are going to start migrating to other platforms.
Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-MS, I hate everyone. You name it, I hate em.
>Good lord, tell me you don't say shit like that in corporate meetings.
What? You've never jumped up on the table in a project meeting, gestured at the person arguing with you, and screechted - You! I challenge your Kung-Fu!
Its a friggin fake... "Uhhh it messed up my brain, and I am going to figure out how sega did this and make them take responsibility. I am going to do this by playing this game more and more - hey look at what these super cool commands do! Hey at least it cured my crack habit."
What a moron. If it is a true thing then I say poor moron.
>(home server room with ten systems?! WTF?!)
I dunno, there was that post with the guy with his 19 screen flight simulator - that had about 10 systems methinks...
I bet this is the guy that charges $4.95 a year to host your web site. My bet was it was a server in a closet... I guess I was wrong... Its a server in a really flammable closet
I concur... I know that if you have an existing Halon system you can keep it (if licenced I think) but you cannot put in a new one.
My solution if to put the rack on the edge of the pool...
What the heck are you talking about being an american made system... Do a quick search:
-----
In an effort to cut manufacturing costs and allow Microsoft Corp. (Quote, Company Info) to offer its game console at a lower price point, electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider Flextronics Corp. (Quote, Company Info) will relocate its Hungarian Xbox manufacturing operation to Doumen, China.

So we are once again supporting china?
Sick
They are bombarded by them every day, and they ARE actually bad for you. They may not realize that the alarm clock 2 feet away from your head all night is giving you a tumor (EMF).
>>have a 12 pack of Gillete Razors hidden in my shoes,
Careful in the airport with that one, could be they end up doing a body cavity check cause the computer says you have some... somewhere...
9-11 was succesful because:
#1 before 9-11 it was legal to bring box cutters on planes.
#2 Most passengers figured they would live through a hijacking so they did nothing. I bet half the plan would get up and kick the crap out of some yokel with a box cutter
#3 Cockpit security was a joke
They take away crochet needles from little old ladies now (AS THEY SHOULD!!!!) so I think we are safe, and there is absolutely NO NEED to millimeter wave radar my sorry looking ass when I walk through a terminal.

I can relate... * Award for funniest thing I saw on Slashdot today *
Yeah, aren't you the same guy who welcomed the escaped robot balloon as your new master?
Where did that getcha?
Our current corporate masters will never let that happen.

A tomahawk costs 500,000 alone... And they are expended. Besides we are going to invade libera next... Great, how many wars can we fit into 4 years?
