You can tell us what a not too stupid guy could have told us.
You can even put your sentences into paragraphs, which one are representing a quite clear and concise argument.
Well done, I guess you have graduated from something, someday.
This is something to attack the media and assholes using the global warming for political schedules, and influence zones. I personnally am wondering about the extent of the global warming. You are exposing a quite polished point of view, that can bring you the favors of badass moderators, but you are trying to defend an ill-suited point that brings nothing to the discussion. As you told it, the main difficulty is to know whether the climatic changes are driven in some way by human interference. We all know that, and I guess you just had to read a NYT article (free registration, so good, heh ?) to get the point. But what you may not know (apart the fact that you are truly inventing things - no organization or scientific movement ever claimed an ice age in the 70s, because at that time, they just realized how big the global warming was... but nonetheless this proves to be a good introduction ) is that scientific studies have been led on that subject. The result is that, obviously, as there are no objective scientists, things are mixed up. But what a responsible guy may say at that time is : let's take a conservative stance, we don't know, so let's assume we have something to do with it. We should increase our probabilities of survival. This is Darwin after all.
Apart from that, I'd like to check some of your ideas and make a not so detailed analysis of it (basically because they don't deserve it:). Let's see : First paragraph : we are free ! oh yes man ! that's a +1 for you.
The two next paragraphs ; the core of a polished discursive rhetoric, like we know some things, but actually we don't know them, so let's fuck all that. +1, you seem informed. No comment on that.
Two next paragraphs : let's settle this in a democratical way, instead of relying on evil pressure groups. I hope your kids will reward you the best fucking idiot medal if ever we suffer heavily from global warming. +1 for you, for you believe in democracy.
And eventually +1, because you read/., and post a link. This is +4 you have +5 insightful, your previous post is +5 interesting. Well done, for the two first posts. Do you hope to access M1/M2 soon ?
WAKE UP FUCKING BADASS MODERATORS, KARMA WHORE.
Didn't you noticed the sig ? I can spot these from miles away. Use your head, not only your finger.
true, but the fact is that you can't exclude an exception inside a rule (Qatar inside the Arab world). And what does the average French/German have to share with his American counterpart at this time ? Some french planes have been to Los Angeles have been followed by military fighters ; if this is like feeling comfortable.
I think we have the same views on the overall ; if not, at least I can thank you for a cool and thoughtful answer...:)
how funny is this article that unwillingly proves the inefficiency of that measure.
After a short presentation, we have the list of countries that are exempted from having their tourists and/or workers scanned. Which countries are these ? Europe, Japan, Australia. I can understand for the two latters, but if September 11th proved something, it's that terrorist networks are deep-rooted in Western societies, especially Europe and the US. So, guys, you still have until October to make a great deal of this measure. Plus a nice snippet in this paragraph : The travel data are supposed to be securely stored. Oh, Yeah.
The funniest thing is that people do believe in that kind of crap. They think it will make their country more secure. They think that preventing a crime or other legal issues -(Oh, Yeah)- charged person will prevent them from having some other non-beared people bombing towers with suicide planes. Or maybe it's the governement that initially thinks it will make the people more confident. Until the next time. But for now it's working. Psychological assault, well done.
Apart from that, there are remarks to make on a more general scale :
What kind of diplomatic measure is this to exclude countries from a policy, just because they enjoy the same wealth as you do ? What kind of antipoor racism is that ? If they had based that on security researches trying to determine potential threats, ok. But, Brazil ? Argentina ? Chile ? The US governement really seems to want to widen the gap.
I'm not aiming the US in particular ; the EU does the same with the Shengen visa towards poor countries. This is a general policy amongst Western societies
And in my opinion, this is where radicalism, and at last terrorism, stems from. The governements may understand that terrorism cannot be avoided. Look the situation in Palestine ; security has been Israel prime target for 15 years now, and where are the results ? Policies have to focus on the causes, not the consequences. Why terrorism ? Has anyone ever asked ? We should wonder about the Arab world, I mean how do they consider us, what's their state of mind internally, how do they compare to us, what do they want to resist, why are they so proud. Some questions that are rather fundamental to the understanding of a problem that can't be avoided by security. Repeat please : CAN'T be avoided by security.
Again, I'm not trying to depict a black and white landscape. It's not the Arabs versus the Americans. But indeed it has some things to do with the global relationship of the West with them. Think about it ; we've been playing the geopolitic bastards with them for more than a century now. How may they feel ?
His post is not Offtopic. Somebody can answer him : this is the price of miniaturization. And that's it. But get prepared to pay for more than that to get that little cute white thing in your pocket.
Apple moderating zealotry is one of the most unbearable thing down there. Shame on you !;0
you said everything that was needed. Well done. But the question, now, is : why such a story is posted when this is self-evident than someone is going to refute the very content of the story ? I am going to try not to be as disrepectful as you are with people that don't agree with you.

There are damned good reasons for using MacOS still, unless you have a fully-functional clone of Photoshop 7, QuarkXPress 6, Illustrator, etc. ready for us. First thing to say, whether you use Photoshop and Illustrator, whether you use Quark at full throttle. If you use Quark to make simple integration, there are replacements. As a matter of fact, Quark is becoming a lame product. Furthermore, 99% of Photoshop users can be fully satisfied by the GIMP, with enough tinkering. I agree, there is no replacement to Illustrator ; it's the same for Macromedia suite. But, if I remember well, the subject was OSes and no other commercial softwares ; using any product you cited doesn't imply MacOS. There is winserf.
There's also still a need for Windows. cf infra. Please cite any of my post where I said that there was no need for Windows. I don't like this OS, but I use it for some purposes, because there is no other replacement.
...despite its BSD roots. What is to a building what are roots to a tree ? IMO, a base : so BSD-based is not incorrect in my mind.
I want a world without brainless *n?x zealots. Can you understand that? Basically, yes I can understand, this is what I am trying to say. To quote myself (very pretentious, yeah) : Mac users are probably the blindest geeks on earth, far before Linux users, who are far before Window$ users which seems to prove that Linux users are zealots too. I try not to be part of that.
don't make the zealot with me. I just denounced a blatant geeky advertising for Knoppix (hardware is supported under Linux, except some rare cases (nVidia mostly, and intel wireless) that you can check before buying your brand-new useless computer ; thus you don't have to bring your Knoppix Cd to the store), it was not to listen to some Mac brainless fans.
Again, I don't see why people are praising a "free-software" company, when it sells a minor upgrade of some FreeBSD-based OS for 139 USD. Mac users are probably the blindest geeks on earth, far before Linux users, who are far before Window$ users (yes, MS users know they use crappy software) ; they refuse to admit flaws in MacOSX, they refuse to admit the insane commercial policy of Apple, they refuse to see that Apple is propagating the Microsoft way of thinking, which is mainly ; we fuck you, dear users. Mac is producing good software because they need to do it to survive. If they didn't Apple would have been swallowed by Gates' evil company. The situation by now is that Apple has created a niche, full of zealots (even more than the average/. reader with Linux) ; but the question is, if Apple had the situation of Microsoft, how would it be different ? IMO, it would not.
So, please, stop pissing around with your miraculous OS ; I don't care, I want a *FREE* IT world ; can you understand that ?
Sincerely, how many movies did you see that year ? Come on, can't you speak about anything else that Matrix, LOTR, Xmen2 and Finding Nemo ? This is crazy. I can find only two explanations here : or I didn't get that the article was about how crappy Matrix Revolutions was (I guess this has been/.ed already), or the/. guy only goes once/twice a year to the theater. Can you think of something else than sci-fi and heroic fantasy ?
However, I thank various people, but *so* rare, for mentioning other movies. And I disagree with mods that should have +5ed these posts. Kill Bill obviously : thank you so much Quentin for making us feel that we all shared the same popular culture in our childhood (even if it is a *fake* impression), and then putting it up on a wide screen. Dogville : no comments.

not saying at all that this is not a good initiative in absolute terms.
But I guess that, if ever it improves to reduce the overall amount of mail, Microsoft will use it as another hoax for testifying the usefulness of their brand-new security-policy.
even if we disagree, I thank you for presenting arguments instead of insults.
However, let me discuss your two arguments. First, programming is far less extensible than poetry. With poetry you dont have to put that ; that at each end of your line. With computing you can't do what I just did with words (so crappy, whatever) in my last sentence.
I agree with your second argument. Code obviously reflects the personnality of the one who wrote it. But still this is not enough, in my opinion. Have you ever tried to make programs like that ?
this is fun that you are speaking of poetry as represented by the sonnet, because the sonnet was used at a very precise time in history (mainly during the 16th century, with the European Baroques), and then criticizing my post because it is historicized.
I guess that we really didn't understand each other. I'm not saying structure doesn't matter in a poem, but at the contrary, this is useful to get rid of it. Have you ever try to read some kind of experimental poetry, sublime in the words, but lacking even the minimal structure ? This is unreadable. Because we humans need a little structure.
And you will have noticed that poetry progressively relinquished the structure that was before necessary to make humans read it without getting too confused.
I maintain my point, poetry is about freeing you, getting your mind outside the mental structure on which your daily life is based. Speaking of sonnet, I advise you to notice by reading it how much Du Bellay or Agrippa d'Aubigne sonnets will free your mind if you stop focusing on the very structure. Enjoy !
I guess the submitter coded too much in his life, because now he is mixing things up.
Coding is about structuring, and poetry too has structures, indeed. This is a shallow comparison. For the whole thing, pardoxically, in poetry, is to give the reader enough freedom to free him(her)self of the structure.
In poetry, structure is a mean, an assurance you take to get free quicker ; in computing, structure is *everything*. Poetry and computing are so different. Computing looks like more architectural works. Definitely coders are not poets ; in that case, they *would* be poets.
not just in the third world countries I guess you didn't read that much papers about Israel. So ironic.
And spare us the all too naive 'this is a good thing, but people Linux is not worth it, this is WRONG' speech. You are preaching convinced people./. wants new insights.
this time I'm gonna turn into the trollish.
What the hell was flamebait in my previous post ? I included myself in the labelled "flame". It was meant to be a different perspective on this problem. Fuck you mods. If you can't even take that criticism, that is adressed to each and everyone of us, piss off.
in our already deprecated world, people lack physical agression, war, violence, exteriorization of human silly desires. I guess this is why you can see so many people arguing about whether Paris is the most beautiful city in the world, whether America or Europe is the best place to live, whether a Kalashnikov or a M16 is better to kill 3-legs sheeps, and eventually, whether Gnome or KDE is the faster desktop. This a replacement for street fighting, for knife fights, for insults and injuries ; at last, I can see no other explanation.
What is this all about ? Why do we all need to take so puerile stances ? Is it worth it ?
The vast majority of people here are so self-convinced of which desktop is best than they are never going to change. We have to face it : we are zealots, each and everyone of us.
But the main thing is that I think too that the vast majority didn't choose a desktop by considering objective facts. In my own case, I chose Gnome 1.4 on Slack 7.0, mainly because I found it nicer, and less Windows-like than KDE. No matter for me if there was a tiny difference in speed ; what a newbie wants is a nice GUI as a shelter aside the black and white scary terminal, a warm place to stay some time, chilling with some music, before getting back to the frightening emacs. After that, this is all about personal preferences. I still use Gnome 2.4 ; I never gave a try with KDE. I guess this is kinda cool, but I have no interest in changing from Gnome, because it fits to my needs. I find it fast (not lightning fast, but fast, and not 3,6 secs to ls 500 items, stop kidding), beautiful (especially with gdesklets), stable (the few times it becomes buggy the restart is almost instantaneous), with well-integrated apps. What can I ask more ? IMO, nothing. I'm not saying that KDE is not good, maybe if I took some more time to explore it (more than 3-4 days in the beginning), I would be writing with Ksomething. This is not the case.
This is really, really strange that in a field that requires correct estimation about what you need (don't you get mad about people buying war machines for making some text processing?), people in here are still competing on milliseconds that kind of stuff. Gnome may release a new version, faster, more stable, maybe a bit less than KDE, maybe a bit more than KDE. Who cares ? Who cares ?
Be happy with your GUI, stop pissing around. Linux is great, and that's it.
Strangely enough, there does not seem to be so many european posts about that subject, that is truly interesting.
For my fellow globalized-citizens from America, two things:
Oh no, those fucking africans are going to invade Europe, because there will be no more control over immigration. Maybe you are not aware of it, but we have something called in here the European Union. And that means that England and France are virtually borderless for the transportation of people. This is not because you red it in the press that the train project will be the same. Why ? Because Morocco is not part of the European Union. It is only applying for a "special relationship". Thus, one can imagine that controls there will be tight, very tight. Spain has been sailing a tight ship so far.
What happens if an islamist/terrorist is plantin a bomb out there ?Stop being so neurotic about that. People with dark skin don't have bombs in their suitcases. Only people with mad minds have bombs in their suitcases. Morocco suffered a terrorist attack ; Bali suffered a terrorist attack. Don't you have the slightest impression than terrorists are focusing on the shifting of Islam from the inside ? No ? Think about it. There will be no more risk for a bomb here than in every other place in the world.
What's interesting here is how spain is changing its mind about morocco. After all the fud about the Turah island, this is one more step forward to enhance the relationship between Spain and Morocco. It a step for solving the immigration problem, since this is a path to rationalize the constant flux of immigrants coming to Europe from Spain. It is a step for integrating North Africa into Europe. It is a step for making the Arab people understand that they are *not* rejected. Etc.
Tough there have been some funny jokes (I loved the thread about grammar/spelling), people should speak more quietly about issues that they don't know anything about.
I find your post a bit too bitter, and a bit too severe.
It's not breaking news that GL has mastered marketing better than anyone else. This is not new, since SW had some success, toys shops are filled with Luke's figurines for sale at 50 USD. Because they know people will buy it. Ok.
But this is not mixed with SW plots. I mean, whether he is a good manager or not doesn't have anything to do with his writer skills. One can be a good fellow on one side, and a bad motherfucking merchant on the other. There is no problem with that, life is full with this kind of people (me, you, him, Obi-Wan, etc.)
Apart from that, what's wrong with the will to sell a product. If GL had not been such a huge merchant, SW would be something like BladeRunner ; a incredible movie (3 for SW, ok), but not the myth it is today.
And do you really expect a guy who wrote three movies 30 years ago to remind every little details ? It's of no use ; SW is not a diehard fan trilogy anymore, it is a good recall of the old days. Who here believes that fashion in SW is going in the opposite sense than here ? That you can wear some sexy shirts, and 30 years after, fucking bad disco pants ? That you fight at lightning-speed, and 30 years after, you became a fucking parkinson-motherfucker with a dusty saber in the less shaky hand ?
GL wanted to make himself happy with rerecording some movies, and putting the SW world to a new birth. Come on, he deserves it. It made SW, no ?
I'm not going to give you my point of view about SCO, I think enough things have been said about it. This is crappy, and that's it.
However...
the McBride's special emphasis on the gap between closed and free software made me think about the relationship between those two communities. And a shocking question came into my mind, which I was not able to answer... Let me explain
Writing free software in itself is not a greedy hobby right ? I mean, it doesn't make you any richer. I don't see why some people would be paid for writing free software, if this is, by definition 'free as in freedom' software. If anyone can take your code away, this is of no use for a company to pay coders, right ? One could rely on sponsors, on advertising, but I think this doesn't make big companies live on. One could rely on private donations, but I don't think it would be enough either.
The fact is that a huge majority of free software programmers have some 'real' jobs, ie paid jobs in companies that produce closed-software.
I think we can safely assume that the free software world is fighting for a generalization of the copyleft principle, or similar licenses/principles.
Now let's build an hypothesis. If the free software world takes the lead some day, how programmers will survive ? If there is not enough closed-software companies to pay coders to keep writing free-software, how will this continue ? I can't see any answer to that question. My main conclusion here is that free software needs proprietary software to live on. Of course there will always be some people able to survive because they are geniuses (and thus they receive plenty of donations for instance), or because they don't need that much money to survive. But for the others ?
I am aware that some companies make some profit from free-software based solutions. But they justify the price of their products for post-programming services, or installation, maintenance, warranties, etc. I'm just speaking about core programmers here.
I'd like to believe that one of my assumption is false. This is why I'm posting this, because most probably someone has the answer. But really this is strange to realize that maybe we can't live without those we are fighting...
with all my respect to the grandpa picture on the right column of the article, what kind of crap is this ?
Two questions :
No explanation of the mathematical formula : I assume that the 0.22 coefficient for the age accessibility comes from the fact that the average life expectancy multiplied by 0.22 results in a relevant Human Development Indicator, explained somewhere else on the net.
I'd like the scientific staff out there to explain me how they link the Monopoly Simpson Edition to their *elusive* mathematical formula. Really I'd like to know, in other words than the political scheme "family like to have some fun", what ties Homer with decimal multiplicators.
Is this really 'News for nerds' ? I'm not a nerd, but this doesn't sound even like news....
First thing to say, the entrance of the library is at the back of the main entrance.
Second thing to say, don't go there on weekends, except if you are ready to be queued up for some hours. Best hours to go there are at the opening (I think it is a 12 or 1 pm, beware, it's closed on tuesdays), or 3 hours before closing (which is at 10 pm)
And third thing to say, yes, there is an internet access, but you have to take some tickets (free, of course) that give you 40 minutes of consultation. Apart from that, no free access ; I can understand, it would become such a fucking mess...
Good try. You are doing well.

this is fun that you are speaking of poetry as represented by the sonnet, because the sonnet was used at a very precise time in history (mainly during the 16th century, with the European Baroques), and then criticizing my post because it is historicized.

Definitely coders are not poets ; in that case, they *would* be poets.

not just in the third world countries
I guess you didn't read that much papers about Israel. So ironic.
And spare us the all too naive 'this is a good thing, but people Linux is not worth it, this is WRONG' speech. You are preaching convinced people. /. wants new insights.
Like this one :).

If ever this line got mainstream, things would be different. Very different.

this time I'm gonna turn into the trollish.

For my fellow globalized-citizens from America, two things :
- Oh no, those fucking africans are going to invade Europe, because there will be no more control over immigration.
- What happens if an islamist/terrorist is plantin a bomb out there ?Stop being so neurotic about that.
Etc.Tough there have been some funny jokes (I loved the thread about grammar/spelling), people should speak more quietly about issues that they don't know anything about.

Someone ?

with all my respect to the grandpa picture on the right column of the article, what kind of crap is this ?
Two questions :
- No explanation of the mathematical formula : I assume that the 0.22 coefficient for the age accessibility comes from the fact that the average life expectancy multiplied by 0.22 results in a relevant Human Development Indicator, explained somewhere else on the net.
- I'd like the scientific staff out there to explain me how they link the Monopoly Simpson Edition to their *elusive* mathematical formula. Really I'd like to know, in other words than the political scheme "family like to have some fun", what ties Homer with decimal multiplicators.
Is this really 'News for nerds' ? I'm not a nerd, but this doesn't sound even like news....Regards,
